Re: [MBZ] Snakes in the attic
A friend of mine had a racoon in his attic a couple years ago. He could go up into the attic and it'd just sit and stare at him. He paid something like $1000 to have it trapped out. I told him I'd blast it with the pellet gun for free. That was before I had a good pellet gun too. In retrospect what I had then would have just aggravated it. The one I have now is a .22 moving at just under the speed of sound, it'd do the job clean... -Curt On Friday, May 31, 2019, 9:30:30 PM EDT, Mountain Man via Mercedes wrote: Kleb wrote: > Yea but hell the wife is freaked out. I would say a few weeks ago. The snake might come and go. I am not sure if he has heard the noise continuous or not since then. As long as the snake stays up there and gets rid of mice, I suppose all is good. On 6/1/2019 6:59 AM, Meade Dillon via Mercedes wrote: How long has your kid heard something at night? Re: [MBZ] Snakes in the attic
Both rat (black) snakes and corn snakes are common here. Corn snakes are often confused with copperheads, unfortunately. One way to tell if you’re close enough is that venomous snakes have slit eyes, like a cat. non-venomous snake’s pupils are round. I’m not sure i would be keen having one in my attic, but my ceiling is sealed up tight so I wouldn’t be worried about it getting into the living space. And again, as Don and others said, it wouldn’t be there if there wasn’t a food source. I would much rather have a snake in my attic than mice or rats. -D > On May 31, 2019, at 10:29 PM, Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes > wrote: > > That’s a rat snake. Re: [MBZ] Snakes in the attic
That’s a rat snake. Very good to have around though they can be scary. Can climb trees too to get tree rats and birds. I saw one today about 4ft long crossing my driveway as i was headed out to do errands. Last year I was out in the garage workshop sitting at my bench doing something. I had a broom or something leaning against it, it started moving. WTF. So I stand up to lean over to see what it was and this big corn snake about 5ft long pops up. I think we were both startled. I grabbed another stick and was trying to lift it up and put it outside but it meandered off into my lumber rack. Now these things look a bit like copperheads so this is what I thought it was as I know there are copperheads around, and that really had me scared, the damn thing was slinking around my garage. But turns out it was a good snake so I figured it was keeping the vermin down. --FT Sent from iPhone > On May 31, 2019, at 9:33 PM, OK Don via Mercedes > wrote: > > No - let him finish off the mice, then he'll move on. What Dan said - we have a few different kinds of black snakes (though none in the house that we know of) - they are pretty much "rat snakes" - good to have around. I could not see a head or really stuck around long enough to see any markings that I recall. I decided it was time to pack it up and head out of the attic. I am thinking this snake has been up there for a while as the kid says he has heard something up there at night. I also do not see any signs of mice up there either. Being out in the country we get mice on occasion and I put poison bars up there which knocks them down. The bars have not been touched so that tells me there are little to no mice up there currently. I suspect this might be a non poisonous snake that eats mice, could be the same as the one I found in the shop last year. Should I leave it up there so it can eat mice, should I get rid of it? How do I go about that. Do I need to call somebody? Doing battle with a snake in the shop is one thing where I can move quick. Crawling around in the attic where I can't move around very fast is a whole different deal. --- This email has been checked for viruses by AVG. https://www.avg.com ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
