Good point Brian - I recently pulled the spare tire (don't know how old it is, but the tire and rim look un-used) from the trunk of the '78 450SLC, and replaced one rear tire with it. I only set the wheel on the drive, did not drive it (engine is still out). A chunk of inner sidewall has a large blister - looks like it would pop with very little encouragement.
