This was in northern Maine. Thinking ahead is not a strong suit.
I started going on hunting trips up there with my dad when I was 13, so about
30 years ago. The first year I went there was a house where they built a
garage. That first year they put up the outside of the garage and put the roof
We did that one too. Worked well.

A heat lamp on the floor under the oil pan worked
My Dad had a '64 Beetle that he bought new when I was ready to drive. I'd
already been driving it from the airport to home and back when we were
working on the airplane (Cessna 195) and he'd forgotten a tool or two. I
did learn to drive it on the taxiways at the airport. Before I turned 16, I

My parents had a newish 65 or '66 in Goose Bay Labrador. It supposedly
started on the first try every time, all winter.

Driving a Beetle was a requirement for first time drivers in my family. I was
the exception because Dad got a deal on a 1970 Maverick two door when it was my
turn to drive. However, I wrapped it around a tree a few months later in an ice
storm, and it was replaced with a 1968 VW Beetle convertib
We drove the crap out of ours, and it lasted some years after we were done with
it.. 72 Beetle with minimal maintenance, affectionately known in the family as
the Nazi Nightmare.

When my parents got married my mother had a VW Type 3 fastback. Dad said it
was difficult to start in the northern Maine winter. He said he would have to
sneak into the garage with a can of ether. If the car knew he was coming it
would refuse to start so he would sneak in the back door, hit it
I had a '73 super beetle as my first car. I don't know if I strictly
held to 2k miles valve adjustments, though I did them fairly regularly.
I was about 17 years old and took that engine completely apart, had the
case line bored, and rebuilt it with new rods, pistons, cylinders and
heads. I recall
Adjusting the valves every 2k miles got old really fast on my 63 beetle. Fun to
drive in the summer, nearly impossible to start in Wisconsin winter.

And the buyer appears to have left a lot of money on the table, too. $5k over
