Corrosion in the rheostat. I soldered a jumper to bypass the dimmer,
since the bubs are pretty dim anyway.
The dash lights (including all instrument cluster gauges and ACC control
panel) on my 1985 300TD quit working when I took the car for a spin after
it had sat idle for a couple weeks.

I twiddled until I was dizzy, but will keep on trying. Come to think of it,
it behaved erratically when we went for a trip to the shore in September...

Bad ground or a crack in the trace on the cluster. Don't remember
if that's the same rheostat as the W108/W116, in which case it's
probably easier to jumper it when it goes bad, no longer available
if it's too corroded to work anymore.
