The hokey pin/socket arrangement is by far the biggest culprit. But, it's
middle-aged
VDO electronics which can also have solder and/or capacitor problems. It _is_
curable,
but a PITA.

I have the suspicion mostly at fault is the socket the amp plugs into.
I have three amps and the all do the same - work for a short time with the
infamous cigarrette butt, than go haywire and soon after quit.
Seems the ferrules in the socket loose tension causing
I can say I have never actually seen the crank sensor go bad, its
always the tach amp. I guess they do go bad though from time to time.

The tach in my 79 300SD didn't work due to a bad sender at the
harmonic balancer. First time I've seen that. Luck
