I can only imagine what the cylinder pressures must be like if it was so
far advanced as to reduce power.
Or was it so massively advanced that there wasn't enough compression to
burn it properly when it injected? I guess if that were the case it
would explain the white smoke.

The smoke at idle appears to definitely be gone. Took it out for a run and it
still put out black smoke at full throttle but I bet that clears out over time
after a few Italian tuneups. Seems to have more power as well. Goes to show the
cool rolling coal causes less power. It will be interesting
