Same year as Angie's Golf although hers has the BEW "Pump deuce" engine and I 
think this is an older VE type. I prefer the older engine although I guess the 
BEW can make more serious power. In any case a stage 1 tune takes it to 110hp 
for about $300. Totally worth it, it's the tune the Euro engines already have 
That price is absurd, the car looks nice but not that nice... Gen 4 cars are 
getting a little hard for find but they're still around.

I would have been interested but not at the price it sold for. $15K for a 20 
year old VW is putting more faith in VW parts than I have.

My Jetta was leaking rain into the interior and various fluids from the engine 
by that age. It ran great, it just had a lot of minor problems with anything 
made of rubber or plastic.

It's basically an F1 engine, detuned a bit, with the electric motor

redline is all the way at 11,000. The electric motor attached to the 
engine, also known as the MGU-K, makes 163 hp on its own. The two 
front-mounted electric motors make a combined 326 hp. In all, maximum 
output is 1063 hp, according to Mercedes. As for torque, the company

Sounds like it got overtightened and stripped the nut in the CP

Routine fluid and filter change. Connector plug is leaking and I always replace 
these as part of the job. Loosening the nut it just spins and never comes out. 
Tried tightening it and does not tighten. I’m guessing the plastic inside broke 
and it’s just free spinning. The only thing I know to do is to replace the 
conductor plate. Unless someone has any other ideas.

I replaced the plate already when I first got the car 60k miles ago.

 The Biden administration is reversing course on its plan to ban menthol cigarettes.












	The decision comes after weighing the potential public-health benefits of banning minty smokes ( read for free) against the political risk of angering some Black voters in an election year. The White House said that it needs more time to consult with outside groups on the matter. Menthols account for more than a third of all cigarettes sold in the U.S. each year and are predominantly used by Black and Hispanic smokers, according to a WSJ analysis of National Survey on Drug Use and Health data. Some Black community leaders had fought the ban, saying it would expand the illicit market for cigarettes and lead police to racially profile Black smokers. The ACLU and some members of the Congressional Black Caucus expressed similar concerns.

	Beijing hasn’t vociferously defended the country’s first mobile app to break through globally, despite describing similar maneuvers as an attempt to suppress a Chinese company and an example of U.S. hypocrisy. But Beijing’s response in part reflects the view that TikTok is of less strategic value to China’s quest to become an industrial and technological powerhouse, people familiar with the matter said. China’s State Council didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who visited China this week, said that TikTok didn’t come up in his conversations with 
officials. TikTok owner ByteDance said on a media platform it owns called reports that it is exploring selling its TikTok’s U.S. operations untrue. The company didn’t immediately respond to a request for further comment and declined to comment about Beijing’s response.

I just bought this 09S550 for cheap because shop repair costs would likely be 
half the value of the car. Nothing particularly challenging, 2 front drive 
axles being the most significant but not really difficult. The other stuff is 
just minor maintenance. The car is in amazing condition.

 Im thinking it’s probably more of a seasoned gentleman’s car, nothing a 
younger guy would be interested in but a flipper might have been. 

But putting $thousands into a 15yo car (unless you do the work yourself) is not 
something most people want to do so that makes for some pretty good deals. 

GET OFF MY DAMN LAWN!!!

I prefer “classic” rather than vintage.

Not sure the next generation “gets” what we do. And in fairness to them, their 
experience with modern cars is more like a computer game than physical labor.

I’m waiting for when we can sit on the porch and yell at them as they drive by 
with hood stacks on their W123 and W126 diesels.

We are approaching vintage for sure. 
Which makes me wonder…has anyone seen any evidence of anyone following us we 
can pass our torch to? 
We see all the Fakebook clowns and the hood-stack freaks. We also see the 
younguns who are a little better to do on other sites doing crazy engine swaps 
and suspension nonesense and tuning shenanigans with newer models. I am unaware 
of a band of likeminded fellas like us following in our footsteps.

[MBZ] Benz adventure

I saw a set of wheels on FBMP that appeared to be close by.

The seller was quite responsive, told me the wheels were 10X20 ET 30 and sent 
me pics saying the wheels had come off what appeared to be a C215 CL600 that 
looked pretty bad. 

We chatted a bit and talked on the phone. He said he got the car like 5-6yr ago 
to store it for some woman who had to move and couldn’t leave it at the 
apartment complex she lived at as it was dead and covered up, and it had been 
parked up since (actually even before) he dragged it to his property.

Windows were down, sunroof was leaking, car was full of leaves and was pretty 
much trashed. He said it was running when he got it but the transmission 
appeared to be leaking which is why it was parked up. He threw out $500 for car 
with wheels. H. 

I thought this would be interesting to check out so I went there yesterday. 
Turns out he wasn’t real close by but not that far. 

The wheels were as posted but I couldn’t find anything that they would fit, 
very weird size. Maybe a 164 ML. The wheels didn’t look bad but I had no idea 
what I could use them for. 

We walked over to look at the car, which was on another part of his property. 
Car was apparently a C140 CL600 V12 not a C215  according to the badges. The 
body was in fairly rough condition but not smashed or anything. I looked at the 
engine and it only had 8zylinders. Hmmm. Ran the VIN and it was actually a 1998 
C140 M119 CL500. eBay V12 and 600 badges!  It was mostly trashed but had a lot 
of decent parts. I’m not sure how these wheels fit. 

So the whole adventure was kind of a bust (but fun and the guy was pretty 
interesting) but now I’m thinking I should get the engine. I could swap it into 
this “parts” W124 E420 I got last summer which has the 4.2L version of the same 
M119 engine as the 5L in this car.  Build a sorta 500E!  I’m gonna ask him what 
he’d want for it. 

It’s sad that this beautiful car had been left to go to sh*t over a fairly 
simple problem.

Youngest son has driven it since I brought it home. He’s a car guy some, as in 
he does a great job taking care of it, and if repairs are necessary he’ll do it 
with my help or direction. It’s been trouble-free for the most part. I’ve got 
all the service records from our ownership, and probably the most significant 
repair was an AC compressor a year or two ago.

It had been consuming oil, but on the advice of Jono, the owner of Blue Ridge 
Mercedes, we changed it from 0W-40 to 15W-50 and it stopped. It’s garaged and 
has been for most of our ownership. No problems with cold weather and the 
higher viscosity.

Cosmetically it’s very nice. The weldment strips on the roof have peeling of 
the clear coat, but otherwise the car’s finish in pretty nice. Yes, it’s been 
in four seasons for four years, but salt is not used in Flagstaff, just 
volcanic cinders.

I’m tied up with a lot of stuff at the Flagstaff house the next couple of 
weeks, so I probably won’t tear into it until next week. I’ll get plenty of 
pictures when I do.

Sounds like an injector or fuel pump issue or maybe they buggered the ECU. Not 
much else would make it run rough?  I suppose there is emissions-related stuff 
that could affect how it runs but I know nothing about those engines

This is the key.

If you belong to a “good” chapter, like the Washington D.C. or Seattle ones, I 
would say it’s definitely worth it. If you have a local chapter that’s a dud, 
or just a koffee klatch for the core group that has run it for decades and does 
what they like to do and nothing else (Tampa Bay Section) it’s a waste of money.

I was taken by surprise when the dues went up recently. I gather the MBCA
was haemorrhaging members by the thousands, so much so that the kickback
that used to come to the local chapters from the "National" level were
suspended, meaning locals had to scramble to raise funds. Others here
likely know a lot more of the details behind that.

I used to enjoy the *Star* magazine, but since their "redesign" they have
almost completely abandoned the tech columns that were really, for me, the
item of primary interest. Not because it isn't possible to find the tech
info online, but because of the variety of things that I wouldn't
necessarily be exposed to for myself; you never know what you might own in
future. I did find their occasional online events pretty good.

For me, the dealer discount isn't worth it because retail dealer prices are
way overinflated. I'd sooner order online from a dealer; the 25-35%
discount on internet orders far exceeds the MBCA discount.

The local MBCA chapter near San Francisco runs First Sunday Drives, but
those seem to involve pretty much only newer MBs. Any of my 1970s MBs would
easily be the oldest vehicles there, by a couple of decades. Lots of
post-2010, computerised appliances that I just have no interest in seeing.
They don't seem to get that it was the W123/W126 that *defined*
dependability for Mercedes.

As with any car club, it's always the same people slaving away, running
everything until they're finally broken and quit. I've seen it with the
Citroën club, the Arcane Club, the Renault club, and lately with the MBCA
Bay Area chapter.
