And have to say after only being able to play with it for about a day, I love 
it. It needs some TLC, but the pep and design details on it have won my heart. 

Now to fix that vapor lock, which I just reproduced with the engine temp at 
about 190 degrees, while idling. Engine puttered out and stalled. I can get to 
to start with a little throttle, but stalls quickly after.

Where can I get that new check valve again? Going to try this and some 
insulation and see what happens.

It sort of does in the early r107 (D-jet M117)

The system is susceptible to heat soaking of the fuel lines after driving which 
causes a phase change in the petrol.  As a gas, the petrol is far too 
compressible and unable to flow properly/diffuse as it piddles out of the 
injectors.  Hard or no start situation with very rough running if it does light 
off.  This happens, not only after parked for a while, but also long runs and  
transitioning to lower speed city roads.

Running the fuel pump a few times to displace the vapor with cooler fuel solves 
the problem

Couple of additional pics

I believe this was a family owned car down in OK. I don't have the full story 
yet but I'll dig it up, it has "the original" German plates, but I don't know 
how accurate that is. It's supposed that the daughter barn garaged it for like 
10 years, and had been driving it recently daily until it started vapor locking 
/ having hot start issues. Spent a little trying to fix it, and I think 
replaced the fuel pump, cleaned filters/screens but didn't dive deep to fully 
diagnose. My hope is that I'll wrap the fuel lines, replace the check valve and 
w the cooler weather here in IL will suitable for commuting :)

Anyone familiar with 108 vapor lock issues?


As far back (at least) as the 111 (1960) MB used a return flow 
system, to keep cooler Benzin flowing to the carbs.  This helps to 
minimize problems.  First step is to make sure the  valve that 
controls the return flow to the tank is working properly.


That and working on the lousy zenith dual carbs on a 250S are the 
limits of my MB carbureted gasser experience.   I avoid them like the 
plague, but the 220Sb with the dual solex were ok.

I assume Curly's spell checker meant “lovely” when referring to the Zenith’s! 
:-)  My M108 may not be the quickest off the line with only 2.5l, but it runs 
great with no hesitation at all in acceleration.  It loves 55-75 mph, but will 
get to 90 in a heartbeat and sometimes find myself cruising along at 85 on the 
interstate.

As far as the vapor lock issue is concerned, yes, it can be a problem and it 
was for me until I realized the fuel return valve was totally petrified with 
fuel sediment after sitting for close to 15 years.  Tom Hanson has the correct 
part at the Classic Center.  I’d get the whole valve as it has to work just 
right.  Make sure it is threaded correctly and tight.  If not it will spew fuel 
directly onto the hot exhaust manifold.  Ask me how I know… 

I am guessing the vapor lock occurs in the large metal fuel line that passes 
directly in front of the valve cover as that is the only place the fuel line 
passes something that gets really warm.  I have seen some of these motors with 
custom insulated fuel hoses replacing this line.

I love my 250S with the M108 engine.  Thanks again to Jaime for the advice and 
occasional unobtainium part.

Mechanical injection, transistorized ignition with points, pretty easy to
sort out.  They tend to run hot and have head gasket issues, however.
