Models 116.024, 116.033, and 116.120 (USA) 1980 are provided with modified calipers with linings 17.5 mm thick and modified, vented break disks, which are identified with a groove at their circumference. So I know something's up with the 1980 300SD. I think the 1980 versions also used Bendix. I called the Classic Center, but the fellow could only tell me part numbers and not what changed. In looking at the pictures of calipers on RockAuto's website, I see some calipers which have a raised boss which would move the caliper inboard a little (which is where my pads don't fit). I am thinking someone changed the calipers on my 300SD and used the ones for 1978 or 1979 instead of 1980. So, I may have to add new calipers to my on-hand new disks and pads. A bit of deoxit on the fuse contacts isn't a bad idea. I took this hint and found the fuse was good and the other things on the same circuit (#1), the right-side tail and parking lights, worked just fine. So I ran the emergency flashers until they quit and then disassembled the console and pulled the cover off the flasher module. It has a couple of transistors, a diode, a few resistors, and a relay. The relay coil was hot enough to burn myself on. One time, I saw a small wisp of smoke, but not enough to locate the source. After turning it off and waiting a while, when I turned it back on the relay operated normally. I never saw any more smoke. When the relay would stop operating, I could press on the armature to close the Normally Open contacts and the appropriate lights would come on, so it's not a problem of dirty switch contacts or wiring problems. I suspect that the resistance of the coil goes up enough when it's hot that there isn't enough current flowing to pull the armature in. The flasher module has Mercedes part number 000 821 09 63. [MBZ] Today's project
My driving to and from Albuquerque for class this summer has been complicated by turn signals not working when it is hot (they have worked just fine first thing in the morning when it is cool). I took the console apart, took out the flasher (which is electronic) and put Deoxit D100 contact cleaner on its socket pins and reinstalled. I then took the emergency flasher switch in the house and, with it mostly inside a Zip-Loc bag, disassembled it. It was dirty inside. I cleaned it up, put on Deoxit D100, reassembled it, and took it back to the car. The turn signals and emergency flasher functions seem more solid, but the real test will be when it's hot. I am going grocery shopping this afternoon (Shirley is unable since she fell and fractured her pelvis a month ago), so I should have a good test. -- next part -- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Sorry, it does not sounds like Shirley is having a run of good luck. Is this incident #3 ??? Shirley wanted to go, so I got her and her wheelchair in the car and took off for Smith's grocery at St. Michael's and Pacheco. It worked fine all the way there and most of the way back. We stopped at the mailboxes, picked up mail and drove ahead the short distance to our street. I put on the turn signal and nothing ... The emergency flashers worked for awhile and then quit, too. Now I need to study for my class. Maybe next Saturday, maybe before.
