Craftsman has some higher spec stuff that is ok. Polished chrome finish.

Last two new chests I bought were benchtop Kobalt from Lowes. Nice enough.

Main 60" box is SnapOn from Craigslist. Great box. I think I paid 1200.
Worth every penny. Used is pretty good unless all beat to hell, which most
are not if high quality.

Picked up some old proto stuff from a guy clearing out his hangar. Got a
radial arm saw, two Kennedy machinist chests full of gauges and lathe
tooling and two crusty cabinet boxes for 400. Might have been too much, but
pribably not.

I was lucky enough to get this Kennedy tool cart set, $350, when our company 
closed. It is a very robust unit with very strong sliding drawers. Have not had 
many other to compare it too, but if you find one on CL or Facebook MP I would 
get it.

I have a US General 42" I bought years ago and a 72" I bought for $600 a 
few months back used, but only about a year old.  Both are bottoms, I do 
not have tops for either and not sure I will get tops for them, I use 
the top for a work surface.

I’m still on the hunt for a good quality metal cabinet for the Flagstaff garage

surplus shop in hopes they might have something. Lots of nice industrial 
strength metal shelving units, but no doors on them. They also had a lot of 
really heavy duty lateral file cabinets, the tall ones that are about 5’ 6” 
high, but that’s a less than ideal approach, even if they’re only $35/each.

I had hoped that maybe Costco would have something, but their choices for 
garage storage are pretty pathetic. I guess the old rich white people that 
frequent Costco don’t have a need for such things. Sam’s has some, but they’re 
pretty pricey.

A lot of HF stuff is made in Taiwan. You have to read the label. The Taiwan 
stuff is higher quality than the mainland stuff.

In this case they were gift gift cards, so I didn’t have a choice of stores.

The HD in Flagstaff kicks some serious ass, I love it. Always well stocked, 
staffed, and never crowded. The ones in Florida, at least the ones around my 
house there, suck big time. Dirty, poorly stocked and staffed, always crowded 
and difficult to get in/out of.

In Florida the Lowes is right across the street from the HD, and a lot easier 
to get in/out of and well stocked/staffed.

No Lowe’s in Flagstaff. Two HDs in a city of 76k people, though, and they’re 
only about 10 minutes apart if you have to go to the other one, which I’ve only 
done once. Demographics for a Lowe’s in Flagstaff don’t work out, closest one 
is in Prescott, about a 90 minute drive.

bought it on gift cards. I canceled the order and they promptly issued me a new 
gift card via email. Process took about 15 minutes.

I don't really like either Lowes or HD but of the two I prefer HD.

what was going on.

Lesson learned.

Did you know the Quinn brand tools are identical to the lower cost Pittsburg 
pro line, just different labels and a higher price tag. Next time you are in 
there take a look at the socket and ratchets and compare, you will see what I

I have a Craftsman "ball bearing" cabinet I bought on sale back in 2010 or
so and its been excellent, stands up to frequent use and full drawers.

I've been researching more professional cabinets lately and have found
Lista, Vidmar, and Rousseau cabinets to be very nice.  They're not cheap,
but still a fraction of what Snap On boxes cost, which seem to be more for
show than anything else.  Its worth searching these names locally and see
what you find.  Its all custom built, but you might find some really good
used pieces for a good price.

I believe the Craftsman boxes I bought were their medium to high build - they 
had a lower end offering that was black or a dark color of some sort. I didn’t 
even look at them. Mine are the classic Craftsman red and black. Wheels are 
substantial, ball bearing drawer slides, etc.

I have never owned a (commercial) roll around tool cart/chest, so this was a 
first time purchase for me. I have a wooden roll around cart I built about 30 
years ago that is still in service in FL and will certainly outlast me.

my Dad. Reminds me that I need to order some rebuild kits for my ratchets….

The tools that are in those new Craftsman boxes are nearly all HF “Quinn” 
brand, and I’m very pleased with them so far.

The Harbor Freight toolboxes aren't bad these days. I have one that's about 20 
years old and it's pretty garbage (though I still have and use it). The ones 
I've seen in the store lately look much better built.

I quit buying Craftsman the first time I bought an SK ratchet. It opened my 
eyes to how bad Craftsman products post 2000 have been. Their wrenches in 
particular are pure garbage, barely smoothed, never mind polished, with clear 
casting seams on them. HF wrenches are better quality for half the price.

More recently I've bought a few HF ratchets, I was initially wary of them but 
they've been excellent. I've got a 1/2" drive extendo at camp that I've stood 
on, it's only like 18" long but that's still 300+# at the ratchet pawls. It's 
held up fine. At home I've got one of the 3/8" bending head ones, works great 
for very little money.

For the home gamer you can't beat Harbor Freight. I've got their cheapest 
drawer type box and it's been fine. I've had it several years now, I don't 
remember, 5 or 6 maybe.

Is it super high quality, pass it on to your children? Nope. Will I buy another 
one, yep, already planning on it...

Certainly worth looking into. I passed on the HF boxes because they didn’t have 
a top box configured the way I wanted. Because of that I didn’t get into any 
comparisons, but if they’re heavier, that’s definitely a plus.

huskies from hd or whatever lowes carries. 

The HF boxes are 14ga steel IIRC and have much better wheels actually bolted to 
the frame. Most other boxes are 18ga and have the wheels riveted on. Do a 
Google search and you will find a lot of videos showing the difference.

Regardless of the brand name or the color, you are looking for just a few
items that make the box good quality.
1. Sheet metal gauge. For a good roll around box that will carry several
hundred pounds of steel tools [it adds up fast] you want at least 18 gauge
steel.
2. Drawers all have roller suspension, so the glide open and closed when
loaded with tools. Also, good boxes have little latches that latch the
individual drawer closed when you push it in. This keeps the drawers from
all coming open when you roll the box across the floor or driveway.
[instant wreck as the weighted drawers all slide out.
3. Capacity to hold your tools all in one place. [ I solve this problem by

I didn’t look at HF stuff, but I did buy a bunch of tool organization goodies 
from them. Don’t waste your money on the expensive drawer mats - you can buy 
the material in bulk on The Island of Large Wimmen and cut it to size. I bought

Unless you want to spend money for a snap off etc, the US General from HF are 
the way to go. They are much better built that what you will find a lowes or 
Home Depot. You can get the ones at HD a little cheaper than the HF ones but 
they are not as heavy duty.

When I was looking for a roll-around box for the Flagstaff shop I got a

been very happy with them.

Best for what, exactly?  My brother, retired professional mechanic, swore
by his large Mac Tools boxes.  I think he has three of them.  They were
ex-pen-$$$ive.  But they work well, are well warranted, and, most importantly
for him, were secure when locked.  He had 10's of thousands of dollars into
his tools, and didn't want them walking away on him.

If I had such a box, that would not be such an issue.  The house itself is
the security, vs a box that lived in a 'public' space like a commercial shop.

I saw that Harbor Freight was pushing boxes of this sort.  I don't know
anything about them, really, except that they were a lot cheaper than
the pro gear.
