Thats one of those deals I'd love to do but would be a big hassle because my wife wouldn't want to go at first (Its SO far!) but if I said I was going without her would require her presence anyway. Then halfway through the second day she'd get sick or hurt or something and it'd be miserable. Why? All the vacuum wipers I saw had the lever on the inside of the windshield. I spent a lot of time in our old chevy trucks (47 and 48) helping the wiper along with one hand while I drive with the other. (in addition to letting off the gas when you really need wipers. Granted, it was tempting to add a 6 stick to the little lever. Friends talk about a trip to Saskatoon or Regina, can't recall which, to a car show driving some old Ford, many years ago. It rained all the way back home to Winnipeg and the vacuum wipers just wouldn't cut it. So, they tied string to the wiper arms and the wife pulled the strings one way and the other most of the way home. The paint was worn off the A pillars on both sides. More deluxe cars {Such as my '57 Grand Safari} had a double acting fuel pump
which supplied vacuum to the vacuum storage tank.
Trivia, for those of your who have never seen a vacuum. The tank was about 2L
in size ;-)

My Falcon has the DA fuel pump, but no vacuum reservoir. The
wiper motor is under the dash, and inaccessible for such things
as twisting a lever (that it doesn't have) by hand.

Youbecha! I still think an OM603 in a 47-53 chevy pickup truck, (with updated brakes and 5 or 6 speed full synchro transmission) would be close to an ideal truck. (well, I might put 'lectric wipers on it too.) American Bosch made a direct replacement. My 66 Bronco U100, (ragtop) had vacuum wipers, as did Scouts and Cheeps of the same era. Ye gods, shades of our 1960 Rambler! Vac wipers were a blast, they usually only worked when you were coasting down, not while accelerating, and the rubber hoses failed much faster than they do today! I never had a car with vacuum wipres, but I did come across an electric vacuum pump for one. Hooked it up in my '51 VW bug to run a turn and bank indicator -- which was usually pegged to one side or the other.
