Re: [MBZ] W140 - 1999 S320 Opinions
They are underpowered for the chassis. #1 boy drives the early w140 version, which gets terrible mileage. May as well get a V8 and power, since you are not saving cash at the pump. That said, you will save on valve related things and heads, since there is but one. The '99 will have good wire harness, so that is a massive load off the shoulders. The car itself will be much the same as the more well appointed examples in quality. Fewer whistle to go south. The early example in the w140 was taxing on the transmission. By the '99, I think they worked that out, so you will have it mated much better so the engine is not over working the transmission while moving you down the road. It is a fairly stout motor. The 300se suffers from garbage wires, which are the biggest problem at the moment. There is a headgasket that wants changing, and a fair oil leak out the gasket at the moment. Early model is also NA, which I do not know if the later cars rectified with a turbo. Maybe not. clay 2002 s430 - Victor, a Stately & well tailored chap 1974 450sl - Frosch - Two tone green 1972 220D - Gump - She was green, simple and ran 1995 E300D - Gave her life to save me against a Dame in a SUV POS 1987 SDL - Beware Nigerian Scammers On Feb 27, 2015, at 1:50 PM, Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote: > Anyone familiar with the inline six? > > I may go to Orlando tomorrow to look at this car. > > 1999 S320, approximately 180,000 miles, one owner Florida car. Re: [MBZ] W140 - 1999 S320 Opinions
I was always very pleased with the M103 powered cars I've had, so I'm sure the M104 is as good or better, especially a 1999 model. I'm not a big one on speed or aggression when it comes to driving, so having the six versus the M119 wouldn't really matter a lot to me. In fact, never having driven a W140 with a six I'm sort of curious how it performs. My primary goal is to have a sedan, ideally a W140. I've looked at a couple of E55 AMGs from 2000 and while they're nice cars I'm still leaning towards a W140. The M104 is a wonderful engine. I had one for years in my 95 E320 wagon. Smooth and powerful when you wind it out. I always thought it would make an awesome engine to swap into something else. Re: [MBZ] W140 - 1999 S320 Opinions
It's a SWB as far as I can tell at this point. I haven't attempted to decode the VIN yet. S320s don't seem to bring all that much around here, probably for the reasons one would expect - comparing them to an S500. What I found weird was that Kelley and Edmunds' prices are pretty low on these models, but NADA is considerably higher for some reason. Fortunately for me, there are several in the same area as the one I'm looking at that are priced similarly but are better cars relative to mileage. We'll see... Re: [MBZ] W140 - 1999 S320 Opinions
The M104 is almost as robust as the OM603, neither has lower end problems at less that 500k miles unless abused. All the troubles I know about are valve train or head gasket related. You should not be able to wear them out in normal use. A six is a bit underpowered for that chassis, but the way I drive anymore it wouldn't matter other than the poor gas milage. Only problem is leaking front seals so far as I know, and the fix requires a head gasket, unlike the M103. Haven't heard of any other issues not related to unreliable computers. They are fine but unless it's cheap they usually are about the same price as a 420 or 500 and get about the same mileage with way less power Sent from my iPhone > On Feb 27, 2015, at 3:50 PM, Dan Penoff via Mercedes > wrote: > > Anyone familiar with the inline six? > > I may go to Orlando tomorrow to look at this car. > > 1999 S320, approximately 180,000 miles, one owner Florida car. [MBZ] W140 - 1999 S320 Opinions
Anyone familiar with the inline six? I may go to Orlando tomorrow to look at this car. 1999 S320, approximately 180,000 miles, one owner Florida car. Dealer and indie maintained, most service records. Everything works, cosmetics look good, too. I realize the S320 won't have all the bells and whistles of an S500, but that's not a big deal to me. If anything, I'm most concerned about the engine, as I know nothing about how this vintage inline six. Anybody here familiar with them? Pitfalls? Things to look for? Thanks, Dan Sent from my iPad ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post.
