Max wrote: A friend looking for a used Toyota Camry locally said that the new car dealers he visited put all their trade-ins for the week in the back lot, on Saturday or Sunday the Auction Guys would come through and make offers/take their pick (to re-sell at the dealer only auction), and what was left over would either be sold at the dealer's used car lot or at the public auto auction. These dealers were not interested in putting any effort into selling their trade-ins, so the best went to auction or got picked-off by the employees. That was pretty much how it worked at the dealership I worked at. EXCEPT, the cars never made it to Saturday. There were several used car dealers that made a pretty good living buying the trade in cars at wholesale and reselling them on their lot. My Uncle did this for years. When I was at the dealership, the Sales Manager and I worked out a deal where I had first right of refusal on all of the wholesale cars. One time, my Uncle went to talk to the Used Car Manager about a car and he was told you have to wait for Don Snook to look at it. The Manager did not know that he was my Uncle. So, my Uncle stormed back and was pretty pissed. He said, I have been buying cars here for 30 years, how did you get first dibs? He ended up thinking it was funny, because if I didn't want it, I would always call him first before the other wholesalers could snatch it up! Donald H. Re: [MBZ] Wagon prices?
well sort of. Wholesalers themselves do not have lots, wholesalers cant sell to the public, at least not in OK. Some of the used car dealers do their own buying and go around to the franchise stores looking to buy their trades. Many others just buy from the wholesalers. It really comes down to if they have time to do the footwork themselves or use the wholesalers to get their cars. Donald Snook wrote: Kaleb wrote: You are talking about wholesalers. Dealers also buy car from their marque at auction. My SIL was a very successful sale manager at a local VW dealer {quite because he hated the hours} . I helped him shuttle cars VW's went to and from the auction based on financial needs. That being said, they sent most Hondas Toyotas to the auction for the same reason that our wife's don't encourage us to read Playboy. I'm not sure it's true that auction cars are crap. I've bought two, and both were great values. A '96 Infiniti, 3 years old at the time, for $7k (Wife still driving/loving 10+ years later), and an '85 123.190 for $1100, which I sold three years later for $2300. Most of the crap at the auctions I've been to was very apparent as crap and easily avoided, but there is a big risk. Here most small dealers have connections, or hook up with a mechanic, to do what work is needed on the cars. All cars must pass a safety and emissions test too. Sure, always ways to be dodgy about it, but once a dealer, even a small dealer, there are laws that give the buyer some protection, over buying private. Most of the curbside dealers have been done away with here. I think some of the laws have recently hanged here as well, where even small dealers are required to have a service bay at their place of business. Not 100%, but a friend was looking into it, and mentioned it to me. Re: [MBZ] Wagon prices?
What I've heard is that dealers will keep the cars that they know sell well as long as there is not a major problem (crash history, unusually high miles, etc). They might keep one or two more exotic cars to park out front as attention-getters. But if a car has been sitting a few weeks, it's off to the auction. They don't make any money holding inventory. I also know that little one-man used car lots open up and close down here all the time. Often times they're closed within a couple of months of opening. I think it's a very very hard way to earn an income. Not so here. Last time I was at a used car lot (independent, not associated with a new-car dealer) I asked the salesman point blank what have you done to this car since you acquired it and to his credit he answered honestly: nothing. They don't change the fluids, they don't do an inspection. They wash it, put some Armor-All on the tires, maybe detail it if the interior is a mess, and they put it on the lot. Re: [MBZ] Wagon prices?
Generally, all cars here have to pass a safety and emissions test whenever it changes hands. Emissions are good for 6 months I think, but if you make a habit of it, you're considered a dealer. If a car is less than X number of years old, and it isn't very many years, you are exempt from emissions, and if the car is very old, exempt too, thought they are fiddling with that. Safety is all the standard stuff, brakes, lights, wipers, no perforation, etc. It's not to be confused with saying the car will pass a month later, only that everything was within allowed limits at time of inspection. There is a small timer I used to go check his cars out. Indian guy with a penchant for jags and benz. He was not too keyed in about the issues with each marque, but he could talk a fast game. I think he got the lot from his dad. Now this is not on a corner, the 7-11 had that spot. He was next parcel down from the corner on the busy thoroughfare. Dad has the other parcel next to the 7-11 kitty corner from the car lot. Dad ran the repair shop for Benz and jags. There was as walk through at the corners to get to each store. Never purchased from him. He had an SDL on the lot that I was enamored of. After looking at it hard and talking with him a bunch, I decided it would be about as good a purchase as the POS SDL. Had the trap, #14 head and I suspect it needed a head gasket. clay oh yeah, he went out of business and his sister is now repping Tata type indian mini car things. So his sister has mini Tatas? --R Redghost wrote: There is a small timer I used to go check his cars out.
