It's supposed to be changed when the pH begins to drift up to above
about 8 and that's usually between 2-3 years!!

Blue collar skills seem to be in short supply in Seattle. A local
construction union chief was quoted in the newspaper saying they were having
serious trouble recruiting apprentices ($45K/yr after 1 year). Guys would
show up on the job site and quit before noon, found out they had to dig holes,
stand in mud, lift stuff, etc. Although my boys will attend college, for many
reasons I also want them to have experience in a blue collar trade.

Now what sort of fun will that be!?!=A0 Think of the jolly good time the=20
local firefighters will have when the accumulated layers of oil and muck go=20=
up in=20
flames. =A0 You would deprive them of the enjoyment of hosing off my car?

You miss the point entirely. Anyone putting a torch to a closed container=20
containing oil residue and fumes from same is a fool. It's what's inside, no=
t=20
outside.=20

Lo, these many years ago I owned an Alfa Giulietta Spyder. Red. A mistake in=
=20
more than one way. One day while pootling along in the four month old car, I=
=20
drove across a section of road that had dropped six inches at an angle acros=
s=20
the road. The idiots who repaired it simply slopped some asphalt over the=20
exposed dirt which created a six-inch diagonal cliff. While passing over thi=
s=20
fault, the steel oil pan of the aforementioned car contacted the pavement,=20
cracking it and causing a bit of a seepage. I took the car to a local Alfa g=
uy for=20
repair and he decided to weld up the little crack after draining the oil. So=
on=20
after commencing the repair, as he was lying under the elevated machine, a=20
small bang was heard followed by the fastest exit from under a car I had eve=
r=20
seen by a man in coveralls with no eyebrows. The oil fumes in the pan had of=
=20
course exploded, blowing out the pan gasket pretty much all around. Not to m=
ention=20
the gasket under the U-shaped cam cover on top of the four-cylinder twin-cam=
=20
engine. He said then he thought it might be an idea to remove the oil pan an=
d=20
repair it on the bench.

Get it now?

I expect that any low-silicate, low-pH, phosphate-free, pre-charged
formula that meets all of these standards (Chrysler MS 9769, MTU
approved, Daimler Chrysler approved, and Ford WSS-M97B51-A1) would be
fine. I know of no such Prestone product however and Prestone does NOT
list manufacturers specifications on their website. There are Ford
(suitable for Power Stroke Diesels) and Chrysler products that DO meet
those specs I'm told, but I expect that they cost as much or more than
G-05. Someone has said that there is a relatively new Peak long life
product that meets those specs.

Bruce,

All the hard workers seem to come from south of the Rio Grande around
Seattle. There and National Guard. Lots of remodel homes were left
high last two years when all the labor went to Iraq. Able to replace
it with hard working fellows at $9/hr, but just for grunt work.

I am trying to get the overly bright boy to learn some blue collar
tasks. Crawl under the car and swing a wrench. Read up on how a car
works and why. Then I can apprentice him to his uncles to learn from
mechanics about repair, or the other uncle on how finish carpentry
works. Should stand him in good stead when he has to work summers.
And keep Gump on the road.
