Low-end exhaust shops have a stock of generic pipes, a chop saw, and
some benders, expanders, and shrinkers to make it all fit. They weld
everything so they don't have to stock flanges, gaskets, and clamps.

Re: [MBZ] What do you guys think of this weld?

2020-01-04 Thread Dimitri Seretakis via Mercedes
The solid flanges that slide on the pipe holding the flared pipe ends together
rusted away. The pipes themselves were in tact because they are stainless. This
joint which was designed to be undone is now welded together with a short
length of pipe slid onto and into the respective original exhaust pipe ends and
then welded all around.

Herr Mann put it well too.  Combine his argument with Philip's, then
demand the guy replace BOTH sections with new, as that is the only way
to do it right.   Or better yet, get him to refund the money and buy the
2 pieces and do it yourself.

Was the bill paid with a CC?  If so, dispute the charge, get the money
back, then fix it right.

To me, the ugly weld is disappointing. If it seals and hold
together, maybe good enough.

But re-engineering? Failure to repair "in kind"? Diminish
serviceability by replacing a flange with a welded joint?

THAT is unacceptable

THAT level of quality should not cost over $40.   $24 is more like it.

No, you are not being too fussy.   The dude needs to LOOK at the crap he
(his welder guy) is turning out.    And , no, I could not do any better
unless I practiced for at least a half hour.

My FCAW is pretty ugly.    If I had GMAW available, I could do better. I
think the nicest welds I ever did was DC stick with the WWII era motor
generator.

My mom took her 2005 G500 to the most esteemed Indy Mercedes shop in
the Boston area to have a few things repaired including the exhaust (I
will not name names). To be fair, I like the owner and I feel, based
on my experience with him that he does a great job with the mechanical
repairs. His “welder” is subcontracted. I expressed my dissatisfaction
to him regarding the quality of the welded exhaust repair but he
politely defended the welder and gave no apologies and didn’t ask for
me to show him what I found unsatisfactory. There was another area
that was repaired in a similar manner. The total cost was $425 for the
welding. What do you guys think of this repair? Am I being too fussy here?

Yes, I believe the exhaust is stainless and therefore should have been welded
with stainless wire or ideally tig welded. That being said, I have mig welded
stainless exhausts with non stainless wire and the results were beautiful so I
do believe the problem here was due to complete incompetence on the part of
the welder (the person operating the welding machine that is).

I wonder if the exhaust is some grade of stainless? There is some stainless
that has enough ferrous material in it to be somewhat magnetic. That would
explain why the welds look like that. Welder dude used the wrong wire and
shielding gas.

I had a muffler shop in Pasadena, CA, do that with the exhaust system on
my '59 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spyder Veloce. I was not pleased, but as a
20-year-old college student, I didn't know what to do.

Re: [MBZ] What do you guys think of this weld?

2020-01-03 Thread Dimitri Seretakis via Mercedes
There are various reasons why I don’t want to do that. First of all, it is a
good Mercedes shop for mechanical repairs. I guess anything welding related is
just a no no for them. After this experience, I will weld everything myself. I
let it slide this time because I was busy and didn’t want to hold up my
mother’s car while I found the time to weld it. She was complaining already
about how she needed her car back.
Second of all, the owner is a pretty decent guy so I don’t feel it’s fair to
punish him for one bad experience not directly caused by his shop although he
should have offered to remedy it either way. There is a third of all but I’ll
keep it off the list!

Paint covered up the possibility of seeing uncleaned welding slag. Not
only does the weld look like dog shit but that area was originally joined
together with flanges and bolted together. That’s not how the repair was
done. He slipped a piece over one end and into the other thus reducing the
diameter of the exhaust and creating a local obstruction in the pipe which
will rob some power from the engine. In addition, this dog shit welded mass
cannot be unbolted and separated as was initially intended.

To me, the ugly weld is disappointing. If it seals and hold
together, maybe good enough.

But re-engineering? Failure to repair "in kind"? Diminish
serviceability by replacing a flange with a welded joint?

THAT is unacceptable

If the welder was a drunken monkey working for free peanuts and warm beer,
using a flux core 110 welder, then it's an outstanding job.

Otherwise, as a 'paid expert"... it absolutely sucks !

Good welds are also pretty welds. These welds are bone ugly, show lack of
heat control and hand / stinger coordination, and most likely is a flux
core welder.. low cost cheap welder Really bad.

I would, for the money spent, demand the section be removed and replaced
with new factory bolt or clamp in piece... at the shops cost to rework...

The welds are sub standard and will crack and leak... your mom drives it...
strong argument for safety...

I did but it fell on deaf ears. Oh well. From now on NOBODY will be welding on

4 hours at $100ea, plus $25 to dig in the scrap pile for the patch material?
I can remember when MiG welding cost me $30 an hour, but that was in the 1980s.
The good news is he cut the flange out so the next time it goes you'll have to
replace two pieces instead of the piece the idiot indy (or foolish owner)
should have replaced this time around.

I’m no welder other than stick welding two edges of steel plate butted together
laying on a flat floor.

That being said, my exhaust guy does a much better job than that and would have
charged significantly less based on my experience. For example, he welded the
small catalytic converter on one side of my SL500 exhaust for $150, and that
involved dropping the pipe from the manifold.

Hmm. No, I don’t think you’re being too fussy. I wonder how much he marked up

Not sure. Looks like mig not sure if with shielding gas or flux core. Paint
covered up the possibility of seeing uncleaned welding slag. Not only does the
weld look like dog shit but that area was originally joined together with
flanges and bolted together. That’s not how the repair was done. He slipped a
piece over one end and into the other thus reducing the diameter of the exhaust
and creating a local obstruction in the pipe which will rob some power from the
engine. In addition, this dog shit welded mass cannot be unbolted and separated
as was initially intended.
