Depends on needs. The ML is obviously a “utility” vehicle so you can haul stuff
and people. This one has tow pkg (trailer coupling?) so that’s good. But you’re
giving up some comfort in the ride and handling v a “car.”

If the CLS has the room in it you want you’d (Mrs D) probably like the much
different ride. The airmatic will give you 3 stiffness options. ML has standard
suspension and of course will feel more wallow-y because it sits higher.

Both have the 722.9.

The 164 is ok but not particularly exciting, it’s more refined than the 163 for
sure. Competent but a bland SUV. 550 should haul ass though. The 500 not as
much but would not be a slouch and would probably be more fun as a driver.

Yeah, I’m just wondering how functional the C219 back seat is. I’ve never sat
in one, but Mrs. Dan wants a sedan, but if the back seats are inadequate for
adults, this goes out the window.

Possibly more complicated as the primary propulsion doesn't

I guess I'm not sure why you did not get it swapped out under warranty instead

Today the parts for the S500 come in. I only hope I am as lucky with it as
we were with the S420. And I hope this is the end of car issues for a while.
I'm beginning to feel like a full time mechanic.

 Oy.

[MBZ] When it rains it pours

2014-08-06 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I was pretty pleased yesterday when I fixed the Jetta with a $0.98 part so you
can imagine how crushed I was today when I took a highway offramp and got a
cloud of smoke.

The coolant temp sensor lives in the upper radiator hose and is held in place
with a metal clip. The clip rusted and shattered, the temp sensor got spat out
along with much of the coolant. Fortunately there was a shop nearby, the guy
took a piece of wire and fabbed me a new clip and I picked up some water from a
convenience store but unfortunately I'd lost the seal (which looks like an
o-ring in the online picture) from the sensor so I couldn't get it to quit
leaking even with a piece of cloth tied tight around it. A nearby boneyard
provided a new clip but no seal.
Fortunately I limped it the 20 miles back home with only 3 gallons of water
lost. Traded the 190D with its balding tire to Angie and took the Ranger to
Syracuse. A new temp sensor with its clip and seal are on their way,
fortunately theres a TDI parts supplier right in MA so even the cheap shipping
is super quick.

Perhaps, but not much less expensive; the perch includes a piece of frame rail
and requires something like 40 /structural/ rivets to secure it into the car.

Plan on an alignment, as everything on that side must be stripped.

I think I paid $3k for mine.

That downward slide into korean car design.

I find the dual headlamp reminiscent of the botch job done on very good designs
by mandating DOT headlamps in the r107 w123, w116, as well as the 1960s S
series.

These cars debuted at the peak, or abyss of the quality fiasco at Mercedes.
Guaranteed failure of multiple systems seems to have been the unintended design
mandate. Paint, wiring harness, electronics, and more just not up to snuff.
The brand began to turn the corner in 2005, from the mistakes made to meet EU
eco-mandates and employment of turks, instead of Germans to build the cars.

Popping up in between the frame and your upper spring perches, not to mention

Oh and plastic headlamp lenses that are NON replaceable (OE HID are $1100/side

And plan on acquiring something like a SDS machine and MUX; the blinky-boxes

I'd rather deal with spring perches.

I had a 190Dc that was so rusty from RF shock was about to come
loose. I patched in sheet steel with lotsa sheet metal screws.
Drove it several years that way. It totalled the pint-o that pulled
out in from t of it. I only had to change a tire and wire up the
front bumper through the rust hole. Drove it thousands of more miles
after that.

Evapectomy is NO fun. Even if you have the time...

[MBZ] When it Rains, it Pours

Just back for totalling the E300

I took a package to the local post office and was headed home. Not more than a
block past the post office I enter an uncontrolled intersection and BOOM, some
dame plows into my left front wheel, spins me 90 degrees. He suzuki is non op,
and my wheel is riding wrong and I am leaking fluids from the radiator.

I jump out, grab my paperwork and call 911, then get on the horn to USAA while
she, you knew it had to be a dame, comes out of her daze and wants to know why
I hit her? Told her it was her failure to yield. Got the cops there, USAA
lined up, AAA for a tow, and call my sister to tell her I would not be able to
get her on Friday when she flies in for the services, told Mom I would need her
to do that task, I would ride with, and called SWMBA. SWMBA is out of town and
so I left a message. Then I called #1 boy to let him know he has the only
working vehicle in the house now.

Everybody on the phone wanted to know if anybody was hurt. My response was,
not yet because how can you tell right off? Now I am having big pain in the
shoulder, numb arm and hands and neck is throbbing. I called my GP from the
accident to schedule a look over soonest, even before the pain. Until then, I
am taking naproxin.

Tow driver pulled a scam on me. I just wanted the car to go home and I would
deal with it later. He convinced me that it should go to his yard, and
insurance would pay for it all because AAA does not cover accident towing. IT
would be out of pocket right then for it to go to my place. So I went with his
story. USAA says that my coverage will not do that and it should have been at
home where they could look at it on their time schedule.

Either way, another benz saved another life and gave itself in sacrifice.

I took a package to the local post office and was headed home. Not
more than a block past the post office I enter an uncontrolled
intersection and BOOM, some dame plows into my left front wheel, spins
me 90 degrees. He suzuki is non op, and my wheel is riding wrong and I
am leaking fluids from the radiator.

I jump out, grab my paperwork and call 911, then get on the horn to
USAA while she, you knew it had to be a dame, comes out of her daze
and wants to know why I hit her? Told her it was her failure to
yield. Got the cops there, USAA lined up, AAA for a tow, and call my
sister to tell her I would not be able to get her on Friday when she
flies in for the services, told Mom I would need her to do that task, I
would ride with, and called SWMBA. SWMBA is out of town and so I left
a message. Then I called #1 boy to let him know he has the only
working vehicle in the house now.

Everybody on the phone wanted to know if anybody was hurt. My response
was, not yet because how can you tell right off? Now I am having big
pain in the shoulder, numb arm and hands and neck is throbbing. I
called my GP from the accident to schedule a look over soonest, even
before the pain. Until then, I am taking naproxin.

Tow driver pulled a scam on me. I just wanted the car to go home and I
would deal with it later. He convinced me that it should go to his
yard, and insurance would pay for it all because AAA does not cover
accident towing. IT would be out of pocket right then for it to go to
my place. So I went with his story. USAA says that my coverage will
not do that and it should have been at home where they could look at it
on their time schedule.

Either way, another benz saved another life and gave itself in
sacrifice.

Yeah, I think I stay away from driving for a few more days. Death in the
family is one of those big stress items that tend to result in increases in
accidents and injuries. Also going to keep clear of cooking and knives, power
tools, screw drivers and electric wires. Just until the stink of life mellows.

I have been scanning CL for possible replacement rides. Thought about a Lexus
or other SUV thing so I can keep going to the PnP. Next idea was w123 or 126
in diesel. W116 is just too old. No more w124. Not a w210, but maybe 190D,
though that is small. The rest of the 95-05 benz are kind of dodgy, so want to
stay away from those.

She was not. She had been just diagnosed that morning with skin cancer, after
trying for a year to get her medicos to see it was not acne. Coming back from
the hardware store with tomatoes to plant and too much on her mind. The cars
parked along the street went all the way to the corner instead of keeping 30
feet back, which blocked both of our sight lines, and being dark obscured her
advancing on me. My dark car was equally obscured by the same cars. I was
surprised the cop did not make note of that and cite those cars for being
parked illegally.

A big shout out to Peter Hertzing for helping diagnose the problem the problem
on my wife's car. He suggested the idle air control motor/valve and that was
indeed the problem. I was working on her car in the dark parking lot of her
office with nothing but the glow from my I-Phone to illuminate the engine.
Peter made some great suggestions. I bought the part, but could not put it on.
I had to have the car towed, and when it came off the truck it started and ran
fine. But, I had my indy put the part on. When he got the old one off, it was
definitely gunked up and filthy and the valve was sticking. So, I am
confident that fixed the problem.

Thanks to this Mercedes list member who helped me diagnose a problem on a Ford.

Yes, you can clean them. I don't know whether a diesel has one of these. But,
on the 5.4L engine, it is VERY difficult to get it out, so if I was going to
have pay labor to get it out and cleaned, I figured it was better to replace

I bought the aftermarket Borg Warner variety (lifetime warranty) and it was
$51. I don't know how much the Motorcraft part would be. On mine, it was
located under the cowl overhang (you have to approach it from the left of the
intake and reach to the back of the engine bay and on top. It looks like a
booger and I couldn't figure out how to get the bottom bolt off of it. It is
only two bolts, a gasket and electrical connector. So, if you can get to it,
its not a problem.

My Daughter's Exploder once did something like that. The idle speed solenoid
had gone belly up. That doesn't account for the fuel smell though.

[MBZ] When it rains it pours: broken sway bar bracket, now sunroof woe, what is next?

2008-05-23 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN Charleston SC J63
I may need to change my approach from the 'cheap Mercedes' route to the
'reliable Mercedes' route, as this $3000 ebay car (white/blue '87 300TD) needs
plenty of TLC but the time simply isn't there.

Several months ago, a dramatic increase in oil consumption accompanied by
sudden appearance of lifter tick at front of engine led me to believe that the
head gasket blew-out at front oil passage. Decided to find a used head (#17 or
better) to replace mine when I pulled it to replace the gasket. Found a #14
only 20 miles away for $200 and took the gamble, but it had cracks (which cost
me $50 to have a machine shop find, which I gladly paid and returned the head
for refund). Meanwhile, oil consumption is normal again (qt per 3000 or more
miles), lifter tick is greatly reduced, and engine oil analysis shows no sign
of coolant, very low wear metals and 'light' soot after 4500 miles of use. So,
I'll keep driving until evidence of a problem appears. Idle is very smooth and
engine makes very little smoke.

On Wednesday morning, front right sway bar bracket broke. Looks pretty easy,
ordered the parts from Rusty, should have time to install this weekend.

Roughly a month ago, the sunroof started making noise when the pop-up feature
was employed, and then I found that back left corner was slower to come flat
that the right. Note to self: time to clean/lube the sunroof (note was
ignored, too many other high priority items...) So now I'll suffer for it, as
two days ago it made a pop during the lowering phase, and now the back left
corner stays up about 0.5 inches while the right side is is down lower than
normal (in the 'flat' position). Time to employ Dave M's 124 sunroof repair
tutorial... Anyone have the special tools that they'd like to rent or sell?

Really wish I hadn't sold that '84 190D with 5 speed, complete records and only
112k miles (got $5200 for it and told the fellow that I'd probably regret
selling later, and now I do...).

Happy Friday!

Amen, I'm about to become an expert on the dreaded 124 sunroof. I really hope
I can figure out how to get it apart now that it won't retract. I also hope it
doesn't rain too much...

I REALLY hope I can just get it back flat/sealed, then disconnect the switch
until I find time to fix it.

However, hope is not a plan. Anyone have Dave M's number?

Another way to look at it is that one child takes all your time. How much
more of it can the others take? We said that often raising our 4 [5 year

places, though: 7 tickets, 7 meals, etc. I would not part with any of them

We let her court appointed attorney know that my niece, who was not a

Not to be a jerk, but I am sure that the thought of putting the poor

of more than just Wonko. I thought it and then thought better of
posting, since I do not know Regina well enough to crack remarks like
that with impunity. If was humorous and introduced a bit of levity
into a very dark situation. I am sure Kaleb and Regina would
lovingly open their home and hearts to their niece and nephews. In
time, the kids may grow up looking forward to forays into the yard to
assist uncle K'leb with his hobby.

Child abuse comes in many forms and depriving a child of an

is that in many parts of the world this is the case.
Perhaps in future you can send Kaleb a private email with your

so the rest of us don't have to have an insight into your way of

I better stop now because I am working myself into a rather bad

Humor is an excellent tool in helping to de-escalate tense

a good tool for dealing with grief -- something that the list is
 dealing
 with on several fronts.

If Kaleb and Regina were only names on my email list, I wouldn't
 be so bold
as to try to defuse the tension with humor. Fortunately, I know
 Kaleb and
Regina well enough, and they know me well enough, that I can say
 what I said
and know that it will make Kaleb (and probably Regina) have a
 moment of
chuckle in the midst of unspeakable grief.

This has been a bad week for all of us. We've lost Marshall and I am
honestly still trying to come to grips with that. I was one of a
 handful
with whom he shared how bad things were and the prognosis. Regina
 has had a
tragedy, and I know enough of the background to somewhat
 understand. On top
of that, I lost one of my consumers (lost as in she died, not
lost as in she wandered away from staff and we can't find her)
 on Wednesday.

So ... I honestly believe that humor can go a long way toward
 fixing things.
I've used it to de-escalate psychotic consumers. I've used it to
 make MR
consumers know that it isn't socially appropriate to do X, when he/
 she sees
 nothing wrong with doing X.

I can understand that from a distance you might think what I said
 was not
appropritate. Fortunately, I think given the facts (especially
 regarding
Kaleb and his hobby) and my relation with Kaleb/Regina, it was
 in good
 taste.

Of course, I am sometimes wrong and I have an ex to prove it! :-)

Hendrik:

I was going to let that one pass w/out reply but have decided to not do so.

Humor is an excellent tool in helping to de-escalate tense situations. It is
a good tool for dealing with grief -- something that the list is dealing
with on several fronts.

If Kaleb and Regina were only names on my email list, I wouldn't be so bold
as to try to defuse the tension with humor. Fortunately, I know Kaleb and
Regina well enough, and they know me well enough, that I can say what I said
and know that it will make Kaleb (and probably Regina) have a moment of
chuckle in the midst of unspeakable grief.

This has been a bad week for all of us. We've lost Marshall and I am
honestly still trying to come to grips with that. I was one of a handful
with whom he shared how bad things were and the prognosis. Regina has had a
tragedy, and I know enough of the background to somewhat understand. On top
of that, I lost one of my consumers (lost as in she died, not
lost as in she wandered away from staff and we can't find her) on Wednesday.

So ... I honestly believe that humor can go a long way toward fixing things.
I've used it to de-escalate psychotic consumers. I've used it to make MR
consumers know that it isn't socially appropriate to do X, when he/she sees
nothing wrong with doing X.

I can understand that from a distance you might think what I said was not
appropritate. Fortunately, I think given the facts (especially regarding
Kaleb and his hobby) and my relation with Kaleb/Regina, it was in good
taste.

Of course, I am sometimes wrong and I have an ex to prove it! :-)

And I thought I had it bad when someone tried (and failed) to commit
vehicular homicide by inattention on me!

What a bummer! I'm always amazed at the things people can do to each
other, usually without any thought of the consequences to their
relatives. My sincere condolences, this cannot be easy.

By all means, take the children in. They will need a functional home,
and while it may be crowded and possibly rather difficult (they did
just see their mother murdered after all -- expect some problems now
and in the future) they will be better off with you that anywhere else,
particularly foster care.

I shared a bedroom until I got a single room in the college dorm at 20,
this isn't a horrible thing. I think I'm better for it, anyway, one
learns to live with other people and share more that way. All of us
did fine -- two PhDs, two Masters, and an associates degree amongst the
five of us.

no schooled Apparantly, he shot her in the shoulder, then shot her in the
head. He is saying it was an accident. How the hell is that an accident?
So the cops let me go till they investigate to determine if it was or not.
