The only thing the Solex 4A1 can do well is ingest a large moth with
aplomb. My father was trying (in vain) to get his 280C working one evening
in SoCal ca. 1982 or so when the aforementioned moth came over, attracted
by the worklight. THWOOOP! A few seconds later, a little cloud of moth
scales

Actually, a late Euro 280 (is it M110?) would be substantially
better, and in my opinion, more desirable than a V-8. (but not as
desirable as an OM 603!)
6.9 excepted, but this is NOT a 6.9!

What? Mercedes made a sorry engine??? A carbureted engine should be
relatively easy to modify, remove the smog controls, get the power back,
etc. Install a couple of Webers, or a Holley . . .
Of course, replacing the engine with an OM603 would be best!

Another possible home for that Euro M117 5.0 engine?

It's a U.S. Spec carb'ed M110. A pretty sorry combination.
Jaime
An OM603 will fix that!

That one is carbureted though (280S) wouldn't that make it less desirable?

Well, like I said, put an OM 603 or a late model Euro twin cam 6
gasser. THat late euro engine would be FI.
FOr some, carbs are ok. I don't like either, but a Euro carb engine
could work. Buy some webers.
That 4 barrel Solex is a junker. Even Solex couldn't make it work on
a Benz engine, they were dogs from A to Z. Nothing desireable in any
way, shape or form.
Many were convered to D-jet or K-Jet, vastly easier and much more
reliable.
Fuel milage was terrible -- the small sedan got 12,

Find a wrecked AMG and drop something in there

The Zeniths were a pleasure to work with compared to the Solex 4A1. It is a
nightmare of a carburetor, guaranteed to run poorly even when working at it’s
best, and offering really lousy fuel economy.
The M130 in the former W123 LWB had one. I tore it off and did a Holley 5200
conversion.
A Holley of any sort would be an improvement. My buddy Hans had to
deal with them all the time in Germany, said they were horrible, even
the factory tech couldn't get them right.
The M110 wasn't bad itself, other than being rather fuel hungry and
terribly noisy due to solid lifters. More
Intake manifold and associated FI parts. I'd not bother with the D-
Jet, impossible to find parts by now and that one requires the correct
distributor, probably like finding hen's teeth forty years after they
stopped production.

Great chassis to put an OM603 or 606 in.
