That was like 2006 or 2007, I remember the discussion. I didn't have the
wherewithal then. It'd be an interesting trip in my Jetta now.

I sort of recall the discussion as well. If my memory is reasonably
accurate it was being planned for the following spring or summer.

Long enough ahead that the issue faded I would guess.
Would have been a long trip for those in the east / south east.

I thought the AlCan was completely paved now?

When I used to do work in Fairbanks it was rare to see a car or truck without a
cracked windshield, especially if you drove the haul road up to the Yukon (that

Seven to ten days if you do the border crossing into Regina. Depends on your
lead foot how long it takes to hit the border. Road is well paved in Canada
until you get north in the boonies. SWMBA drives speed limits, Canada has top
speed around 62mph, gravel roads drop it to 50 or less. Mounties do enjoy
enforcing speeds.

She made another transit down AlCan with her mutt. A week with

back, she took five days to Prince Rupert, took the AK ferry to
Skagway, then along the Klondike Hwy to Whitehorse and back onto
AlCan, for another two days before getting back to ANC.

The drive from ANC to FAI is around 800 miles round trip.  From FAI
to Deadhorse is another 400, oneway.  Roundtrip in a day seems
reasonable.  Were I driving up from the lower 48, I would go with a
well suspended 126 LWB, or a W140 for real lux accommodations.  The
SDL would handle to unpaved sections of the AlCan without giving you
massive back trouble or rump rictus. Not sure how well the W124 would
take the beating of pocked gravel road at 50mph for long long stretches.

Nothing like dead electronics for taking you out with them, in extreme
traveling.
(Extreme: you stop, you die. Just like extreme sports: you fall, you die.)
Hard to argue with an OM6[01]X for that. Pure mechanical dieseling. The
P7100 pump in the 96-98 (not 98.5) Dodge is the same kind of thing. Anything
newer has electronics. Electronics, for all its wonderfulness, also tends
towards
sudden death, rather than degraded operation.

My son's roommate drove down to Missoula MT from Juneau AK. He said it took
three days. I'm assuming he wasn't sightseeing at all.
