Yeah aliexpress.  I bought some steering wheel switch covers for the
S550 but have not put them on yet.  Proper color, were like $3.50 for
the set.  I got a new headlight switch surround too but it was darker
than the color of the trim (but it was cheap!).  They probably have the
steering wheel switch covers for a 211.

Might not have been for this model, though. Interestingly, Mercedes sells these
switches as a set, not individually. Every other model I’ve had with the
steering wheel switches you could buy them separately.

Attaboy!

I’ve got a busy weekend ahead of me, too, with a bunch of goodies to be
picked up at the stealership early tomorrow morning. After that, the
ML550 gets dropped off at the tint guy so he can tint the front
windows, as the car lived in NY, which doesn’t allow front windows to
be tinted. I didn’t think it would be that big of a deal until I was
driving it this morning around 8:30 and the sun was already heating up
my arm. Fuggedabout it!

On the E320:

Plastic trim surround on front seat - damaged by previous owner/wear
and tear, I presume. Also includes a new storage “door” on the lower
front of the seat, as the pivot is part of the surround piece.

New (spare) tire is at the tire place. I’ve got a valve for it (the
spare tire valve is unique and not a common valve) I’ve got to drop off
and they’ll mount the new tire.

New “zoom tubes” for the engine (plastic tubes from the radiator
support to the air cleaner.) Both were brittle and cracked and needed
replacement.

New air cleaner/MAF sealing ring on bottom of air cleaner. Important
part that turns to stone as it ages from engine heat.

Updated oil filler cap with the taller “handle” that makes it much
easier to turn. I retrofit these to all my cars (000 010 13 85 64) so I
can get the oil filler off without using a slip joint pliers.

New Bosch wiper blades. Can’t stomach $50/set my cost from the stealer.
There’s a limit to my willingness to buy OE parts I can get in the
aftermarket.

On the ML550:

New air cleaner/MAF seal. Really didn’t need one as someone has been
caring for the one on the car, but it never hurts to have a spare

New LED strip for the driver’s mirror turn signal. The lens is missing
from the one on the car, a pretty common occurrence.

New “puddle lamp” bulb for the driver’s side mirror. Gonna be in there,
might as well replace it.

New center console latch. Existing one has a broken hook.

Right hand “zoom tube” - original one is cracked.

Lever and retaining ring for lumbar adjustment on driver’s seat. Missing.

New left side telematics buttons for steering wheel. Originals have
worn off icons.

New lower steering wheel spoke trim. Originals are cracked and the
“chrome” is peeling.

Emergency response QR code label - these are $0.15 and I make sure
they’re on every one of my cars. They go on the inside of the gas
filler door and allow EMTs to scan to get diagrams of where to cut the
vehicle open for extractions as well as the locations of fuel tank and
batteries. Mercedes makes them for everything from the W210 up. They
used to be free for the asking...

Screwdriver bit 126 589 00 10 00 - the #27 Torx driver used to unscrew
the screws that secure the airbag. It fits all airbag-equipped cars and
makes it a lot easier than using a regular Torx driver. Been meaning to
buy one of these for a long time…

I’ve got the new spare tire and wheel coming in, but they’ve got to
mount the tire and that won’t happen until Wednesday of next week. I’m
sure I’ll need some additional items by then.

On top of all this I’ve got some detailing supplies coming in for
refreshing the black plastic trim on the ML550.

Now if someone will only come and buy the SL500!

[MBZ] YAY ME!!! $900 07E350 semi-success

2022-07-06 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I cleared the 722.9 trans fault code (Y3/8y5 B1 brake control solenoid)
and took the car for a spin.  At first it was still in limp mode, I
drove it down the road a bit then parked and fooled around with the
scanner and looking at other codes and whatever, shut the car off and
restarted it and it shifted and drove fine.  YAY ME!!!  I'm sure the
solenoid needs to be replaced so I will do that and do fluid/filter too
which I am sure it needs.  So that says that the conductor plate is
likely not bad and it is just that one solenoid.  One hopes anyway...
that would be an easy cheap fix other than the fluid/filter which is
like unicorn piss or something. Anyway... the guy told me that it would
work fine for awhile after clearing the code then it would go into limp
mode again so this tracks that, so he was honest about it.

It also has an intake flap code I will need to sort out, could be simple
or not so simple (but not too difficult just fiddly). But the car was
running OK and the AC BLOWS ICE COLD

Aside from the few things in the interior the car is quite nice, body in
great shape and looks really good.  I wish these seats would hold up
better but seems to be a standard thing that the driver seat bottoms
wear out.  I should see if I can find replacements.

I’ll find a BanzWhirled link for you. There’s a tab that you have to push in
using a long screwdriver or something comparable with the mirror adjusted in
and down as far as it will go. Then the whole cover slides off, giving you 100%
access to everything inside. A small Phillips head screw holds the outside edge
of the LED strip and the inside has a hook that catches on the cover as I
recall. There’s likely a puddle light in the bottom of the cover as well. I
like to replace the bulbs on these when I’m in there as it will for sure go out
a week or two later otherwise.

It’s not difficult to do.

Re: [MBZ] Yay me!

Attaboy!

I’ve got a busy weekend ahead of me, too, with a bunch of goodies to be picked
up at the stealership early tomorrow morning. After that, the ML550 gets
dropped off at the tint guy so he can tint the front windows, as the car lived
in NY, which doesn’t allow front windows to be tinted. I didn’t think it would
be that big of a deal until I was driving it this morning around 8:30 and the
sun was already heating up my arm. Fuggedabout it!

On the E320:

Plastic trim surround on front seat - damaged by previous owner/wear and tear,
I presume. Also includes a new storage “door” on the lower front of the seat,
as the pivot is part of the surround piece.

New (spare) tire is at the tire place. I’ve got a valve for it (the spare tire
valve is unique and not a common valve) I’ve got to drop off and they’ll mount
the new tire.

New “zoom tubes” for the engine (plastic tubes from the radiator support to the
air cleaner.) Both were brittle and cracked and needed replacement.

New air cleaner/MAF sealing ring on bottom of air cleaner. Important part that
turns to stone as it ages from engine heat.

Updated oil filler cap with the taller “handle” that makes it much easier to
turn. I retrofit these to all my cars (000 010 13 85 64) so I can get the oil
filler off without using a slip joint pliers.

New Bosch wiper blades. Can’t stomach $50/set my cost from the stealer. There’s
a limit to my willingness to buy OE parts I can get in the aftermarket.

On the ML550:

New air cleaner/MAF seal. Really didn’t need one as someone has been caring for
the one on the car, but it never hurts to have a spare

New LED strip for the driver’s mirror turn signal. The lens is missing from the
one on the car, a pretty common occurrence.

New “puddle lamp” bulb for the driver’s side mirror. Gonna be in there, might
as well replace it.

New center console latch. Existing one has a broken hook.

Right hand “zoom tube” - original one is cracked.

Lever and retaining ring for lumbar adjustment on driver’s seat. Missing.

New left side telematics buttons for steering wheel. Originals have worn off
icons.

New lower steering wheel spoke trim. Originals are cracked and the “chrome” is
peeling.

Emergency response QR code label - these are $0.15 and I make sure they’re on
every one of my cars. They go on the inside of the gas filler door and allow
EMTs to scan to get diagrams of where to cut the vehicle open for extractions
as well as the locations of fuel tank and batteries. Mercedes makes them for
everything from the W210 up. They used to be free for the asking...

Screwdriver bit 126 589 00 10 00 - the #27 Torx driver used to unscrew the
screws that secure the airbag. It fits all airbag-equipped cars and makes it a
lot easier than using a regular Torx driver. Been meaning to buy one of these
for a long time…

I’ve got the new spare tire and wheel coming in, but they’ve got to mount the
tire and that won’t happen until Wednesday of next week. I’m sure I’ll need
some additional items by then.

On top of all this I’ve got some detailing supplies coming in for refreshing
the black plastic trim on the ML550.

Now if someone will only come and buy the SL500!

Rain finished late this afternoon so I went out to do the last few things to
get the S550 buttoned up. Got oil lines and AC lines hooked back up, got the PS
pump lines swapped over to the “new” cooler, and tightened various bolts.
Filled coolant (2.5 gal initially at $19/gal for blue stuff, ouchie).

Fired the car up and it ran well, temp was coming up as expected. PS pump needs
more hydraulik oel as it was low and Not Happy, some leaked out as I was
swapping lines. Transmission needs more fluid as some seems to have leaked from
the damaged cooler. I noticed that it was spewing initially when I looked at
the car. I think I’ll try to add more through a cooler line instead of from
underneath as ist in ordnung. Gonna change it soon anyway so should be OK for
short test drive.

Only thing left is install the headlights and front bumper, not a lot to that,
and to bang out the bent safety latch/distronic support to use until I can find

Re: [MBZ] YAY ME X2!!!

2021-12-18 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I put in a new air pump yesterday but it did not rise up last evening after I
did that. It was pressurizing when I jumped the relay to run it but the system
would not rise. Figured it might be something I knocked loose or forgot to
connect back, like a solenoid connector in the distribution block.

Interesting, I opened the trunk to get something and it set off the SOS call
function. After that calmed down from its screaming fit several times (I have
no idea what sets it off, the remote had no effect even though it was working
to work the door locks). I started the car, heard the pump running and felt it
start to rise. Got out and watched it rise and heard the pump running. It was
in “high” mode on the console switch for some reason unclear. I hit it to
release it and it dropped down an inch or so. Seemed to be fine. Drove it and
all was good. No idea what the deal was but it works.

Maybe the nanny just needed some time.

Re: [MBZ] YAY ME X2!!!

2021-12-18 Thread mitch--- via Mercedes

Had to jump the ML350.
Funny, it was working fine the last time I moved it, 2-3 weeks ago.
It died while I was taking care of the jumper cables.
Charged it for a half hour, fired it up, no trouble lights but dome lamp
seemed dim and when I tried to turn the seat heat on it said not enough
power.

That was Thursday.
After sitting on the charger a couple days, I fire it up and still no
charge.
Today I hook up to it, clear some low voltage codes, and while browsing
through the scanner menus the dome light blinks and seems brighter.

I turn on the seat heat and now it works.

So apparently I had to let it run for a while to get it to turn the
alternator back on.
I take back the nasty things I was thinking about the brand new Remy
alternator with 1000 miles on it.

In Michigan, we just pay one fee, for registration and value tax
combined.
I don't remember them all, but 2016 Cruze $126, 2007 Ion2 $67, 2003
ML350 $176, 1997 S420 I don't recall exactly, I try very hard to forget,
but it's over $300.

Yeah I actually don't know the details of how it works, but registration
on a a new car is expensive and it drops each year.

Year: 2004 Make: NIS Model: FRONTIER XE V6 $91.35 ($21.00)

Year: 2009 Make: VLV Model: XC90 3.2 $103.35 ($42.00)

The Frontier costs more than the Element because it's a truck, which has
other fees, even though the excise tax is the same.

So Indiana still does the excise tax thing based on value on a sliding scale -
for what, 12 years, I believe? At that point the car’s value is to the point

People in IN used to do that with IL plates. Maybe still do. IL charged
a flat fee for registration, whereas in IN there's an excise tax based
on the value of the car. So registering a new or valuable car in IN can
be hundreds of dollars, every year. In IL it was like $35 flat fee last

I can remember looking at dealer auctions, and whenever a CA titled car
was listed, they'd disclose how much CA registration was due on the car
to free up the title, usually $50-200, rarely zero.

My nephew in law got lucky with his cars. He gave his CRX to a friend
when he moved back to CA the first time, and I didn't hear of her having
trouble getting a MI title for it, but she might have. His Dakota went a
few years in Michigan on an expired CA plate, then a couple years in CA,
then a year in RI, then a few years in MO. He registered it in CA when
he left MO, and CA no longer had a record of him owing registration
taxes on it. My niece was all ready with her 'I told you so' speech, and
it was sort of a let down for her when he got away with it. His driving
around the country on expired CA plates used to irk her.

2020-09-29 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
MA penalizes you if the LAST owner didn't register the vehicle, even if it was
from a different state. When I bought my '98 Jetta the DMV guy got all
concerned when he realized I was going to have to pay a fine. It turned out to
be $50 which I figured wasn't worth worrying about. If I end up in a case where
its significant I'd go the VT route. I can be in VT in less than an hour.
Actually now that I think of it I realize some of the scumbags across the
street are driving cars on VT plates. I wonder if they're avoiding MA taxes by
doing that...

I should probably call the TM guy first to see if there will be some

before the 30days happens or they ding me on days it was not registered
here.  I have to check about how they are doing things now, they were
only doing appointments before, and last time I went there I had to get
one like 3 weeks out.  You first have to go to the County Assessor and
tax office (2 transactions) to get a title request form sorted out, I
think they calculate the tax, then hand that to the tax man and pay the
tax before you can go to the DMV.  Fortunately the 2 county desks are in
the same room so that is easy enough (why they cannot do both at once at
one desk is beyond me), but then you have to go to the DMV which is
either 1) just down the road from the County offices and is a bit, um,

Regarding the County for the taxes, make sure that you tell them that you
bought the car in a state of disrepair and you could not drive it until you
got it repaired. Bring the receipt(s) for the ignition switch maybe, so
you have some evidence? In my case, when I bought the blue '95 E300, it

Well, VT sent me plates and some sort of registration certificate, I got
insurance so as far as I am concerned it is now "legal" to be on the
road.  VT don't do titles on vehicles 15yo or older, so this one fell in
that range.  I need to call the TitleMax guy tomorrow I guess, I just
haven't done it yet.  I wonder if he cleared the lien so VT did not see

I should probably call the TM guy first to see if there will be some
issue, SCDMV are kinda PsITA about stuff sometimes, and I need to do it

here.  I have to check about how they are doing things now, they were

[MBZ] YAY ME! -- W163 ML500 ignition switch / no start fixed!

2020-09-29 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
So if you recall I bought this 05 ML500 in kind of a shady deal, $400
for the vehicle, $275 to spring it from jail where it had been towed.
It had a "Start Error" which would not allow it to start.  I spent a lot
of time digging into it with the majick computer, and managed to clear
the Start Error message on the dash.  Was not apparently the keys and
code chips as those all checked out OK, the DAS (Drive Authorization
System, a little loop antenna around the key switch that reads the chip
in the keys) appeared to be happy.  I had pulled a DAS loop and module
from a junker for cheap, they are like $175 new, did not need to use it.

Still would not start, after doing some research it was suggested that
the starter power K11 relay in the fuse box under the hood was either
bad or it was not getting power to make it work. Swapped out relays
(there are a bunch that are the same), still no workies.  Turns out
after doing some electrical diagnosis I discovered I could jumper the
relay contacts to get the engine to turn over and start with the key in
Run position 2 (all dash lights come on.  (YAY).  I put a momentary
contact switch on the jumper wires so I could lift the hood and turn
over the engine to start.  (I tried to run it into the cabin but
couldn't find a convenient hole).

So that suggested that an electrical switch behind the key lock switch,
that the key lock actually actuates to start the car, was bad in the
start position 3 -- positions 1 and 2 worked and I could start and drive
the vehicle in position 2.    There is a way to test the switch and
wires right there at the switch (pink wire I think, marked #15?) but it
is tight in there so I didn't bother with that aspect, in any case that
wire is what goes to the relay activator contacts (these are the
contacts in back of the relay slot that are along the axis of the car,
the actual starter actuator contacts are the front ones that are
transverse) and I was getting no power to activate the relay.

Common issue on these vehicles apparently,  can make you crazy, a new
part is like $25 so I ordered one the other day.

There are 3 covers to take off around the back of the steering wheel and
the various arms behind it.  There are 3 Torx T25 screws on the bottom
one, some plastic tabs on the top one, and some tabs and metal snap
connectors on the right panel.  They mostly pop out with release of the
tabs and a bit of gyration and having the wheel tilt up or down.

The electrical switch is at 90deg to the key switch in a round housing.
They are (fairly) easy to pull once you get the covers off.  Small hands
would help but I managed to get the connector off (there are locking
tabs with little arms you can squeeze with your fingers, although I used
a screwdriver to push the front lock tab you can see and managed to
squeeze the back one and the connector popped right off.  Note that
there are some tabs on the top of the copnnector that slide into the
back of the lock and in the housing so it will only orient one way,
pretty much with the tabs on the top at 12 oclock if you could look from
the back.

The actual switch is further inside the round housing, and there are
also 2 locking tabs that hold it in.  You can feel inside the round
housing and get the tabs released, although again you can use a
screwdriver on the one if front.  I could not get a good grip on it to
pull it out so got a small pair of pliers to grab a contact tab and pull
it right out.

There is a small tab on the back of the key switch that turns the
ignition switch, it is like 1/4" wide it looks like, you can see on the
new one how it will fit over the key switch tab.  The old one was
clearly chewed up a bit and it was hard to turn with a screwdriver even
if the slot was OK (which it wasn't) so that was the problem, the switch
wore out or bound up and would not turn to position 3 to start the engine.

The new one slid in OK once I got the tabs oriented to the slot in the
housing, as with the connector, although I did have to put the key in a
move it a bit before the new switch would slide over it but that was
easy enough.

Buttoned everything back up, took out my jumper switch, popped the relay
back in, and JOY  Engine started right up.  YAY ME  I did notice
too that the key turned more easily so the switch was definitely
buggered from that indication as well.

This time it took like an hour, next time would be like 20min.

I"m going to put this in Benzworld with pics of all the bits involved.

Re: [MBZ] Yay me!!!

2020-04-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I really hate dealing with the 90s vintage mirrors, the ones that are
adjustable and held in place with the spring wire. Some can be replaced in a
matter of seconds, while the next one takes you 30 minutes.

I had to R the passenger side mirror on the ML500 as a buddy got me the LED
turn signal piece that goes in the mirror housing from a knacker. The mirror
came out easily enough, and amazingly went right back in. The last one I did I
had to fiddle with for a good 10 minutes.

[MBZ] Yay me 2!!!

2020-04-28 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I pulled a washer pump and tank grommet from a 210 at the knacker Saturday. I
have not had squirters in the $600E320 since I got it and spent a huge amount
of time screwing around with the squirters Which I thought were all plugged up
New are like $55.

I put in the grommet, put in the pump, filled the tank and hit the squirt
button and JOY I have squirts now.

A $0.50 grommet... $5shipping... I need to remember to order some the next time
I get some bits.

I feel pretty stupid though...

[MBZ] Yay me, sorta — 211 airmatic

2020-03-21 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I decided today to go spend some time trying to figure out why this $500E500 is
all squatted down. I took off the air pump to check it out (which I need not
have done, but I wanted to see if it was banged up from the off-road excursion.
It was fine.

Turns out it was getting no electrons. FUSE was fine. A bit of research showed
there is a relay in the electrical box. Pulled that and tested it, seemed to be
kaput (0 ohms) across the actuation contacts. So I jumpered the 12V contacts
and it ran!!! So the relay is bad.

I had the car off the ground, wheels dangling but it didn’t seem to pump up any
struts. There was air coming out of the intake side. This might indicate blown
o-rings maybe so it might need a rebuild.

I put the computer on and did a diagnostic on the airmatic after I dropped it
back down. It had a bunch of codes, one being the solenoid which I guess
controls air going out? A couple of the struts which are not totally collapsed
were showing 5+bar pressure which is about a third of what they are supposed to
be. The other two were much lower. I tried to run pressurization on each strut
but I think it needs to be off the ground, or if the air is not actually being
solenoided out I guess it won’t work.

Got dark and late so I came in. I’ll have to dig into it a bit more.

Oh, I disconnected the 2 rear air lines at the pump distribution block and put
compressed air in them while the car was off the ground but no change. Maybe
there’s some other logic or components in the system they won’t allow that , I
don’t know. I’ll research it all more.

I which you success in getting the fancy computer to talk to the tranny
nanny. Did the manufacturer of the device have anything to say about the
problems you were experiencing?

[MBZ] Yay me!

2019-09-25 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Discovered that the $600E320 does indeed have a drain plug in the torque
converter which made it easy to drain out the old nasty fluid.  The
fluid is black and nasty and smells bad, probably never been changed.
Of course in finding it if I had turned it one way the plug would have
been about an inch away, as it was I rotated it almost 360deg, of
course... I read where they had the drain up until a certain build, this
car was built mid 98 I guess (sold almost exactly 21 yr ago right now
according to docs in the manual case).

Dropped the valve body and pulled the solenoids and conductor plate,
cleaned everything very well with break kleener, there was still fluid
draining out of the valve body, I think most of it came out.  I'll try
to get it back together tomorrow if I have time.  There a 10 or so
screws holding it in, not a big deal. There is some plastic slider
piston kind of thing in the valve body, I'll have to pay attention to
what that grabs.  I'm wondering if that is supposed to have a spring on
it?  There isn't one.  I'll have to check on that.  Looks like not, it
hooks to something.

I'm hoping that a new dose of fluid and the conductor plate and
connector cures the issue.  And getting the fancy computer to talk to
the tranny nanny.  Will know soon.
