Re: [MBZ] boring

2016-04-18 Thread Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes
Re: helicopters, flying...or not.

This is an excerpt from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

How To Fly© by Douglas Adams

There is an art, it says, or rather, a knack to flying. The knack lies in
learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss. Pick a nice day,
[The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy] suggests, and try it.

The first part is easy. All it requires is simply the ability to throw
yourself forward with all your weight, and the willingness not to mind that
it's going to hurt.

That is, it's going to hurt if you fail to miss the ground. Most people
fail to miss the ground, and if they are really trying properly, the
likelihood is that they will fail to miss it fairly hard.

Clearly, it is the second part, the missing, which presents the
difficulties.

One problem is that you have to miss the ground accidentally. It's no good
deliberately intending to miss the ground because you won't. You have to
have your attention suddenly distracted by something else when you're
halfway there, so that you are no longer thinking about falling, or about
the ground, or about how much it's going to hurt if you fail to miss it.

It is notoriously difficult to prize your attention away from these three
things during the split second you have at your disposal. Hence most
people's failure, and their eventual disillusionment with this exhilarating
and spectacular sport.

If, however, you are lucky enough to have your attention momentarily
distracted at the crucial moment by, say, a gorgeous pair of legs
(tentacles, pseudopodia, according to phyllum and/or personal inclination)
or a bomb going off in your vicinty, or by suddenly spotting an extremely
rare species of beetle crawling along a nearby twig, then in your
astonishment you will miss the ground completely and remain bobbing just a
few inches above it in what might seem to be a slightly foolish manner.

This is a moment for superb and delicate concentration. Bob and float,
float and bob. Ignore all consideration of your own weight simply let
yourself waft higher. Do not listen to what anybody says to you at this
point because they are unlikely to say anything helpful. They are most
likely to say something along the lines of "Good God, you can't possibly be
flying!" It is vitally important not to believe them or they will suddenly
be right.

Waft higher and higher. Try a few swoops, gentle ones at first, then drift
above the treetops breathing regularly.

DO NOT WAVE AT ANYBODY.

When you have done this a few times you will find the moment of distraction
rapidly easier and easier to achieve.

You will then learn all sorts of things about how to control your flight,
your speed, your maneuverability, and the trick usually lies in not
thinking too hard about whatever you want to do, but just allowing it to
happen as if it were going to anyway.

You will also learn about how to land properly, which is something you will
almost certainly screw up, and screw up badly, on your first attempt.

There are private clubs you can join which help you achieve the
all-important moment of distraction. They hire people with surprising

No, though that certainly would have been much more interesting. I was on
an assignment as an Air Force civil engineer at a nearby RADAR site on the
ice cap - DYE 3, part of the DEW line. 'Flew out there on NY Air National
Guard ski-equipped C-130 from my regular station at Sondrestrom Air Base
near Greenland's west coast. I think NSF is still doing work there, or
nearby, but the RADAR site is closed.

They were looking for evidence of changes in Earth's climate, etc., stored
in the ice, layer by layer, over MANY years. They finally bored (and
recovered cores) to bedrock, 'depth of about 12,000 to 13,000 feet.

Re: [MBZ] boring for??

2011-07-10 Thread WILTON
No, this National Science Foundation site near USAF RADAR station DYE 4, on
the inland ice but toward the eastern coast, is quite separate from the P-38
landing site which is on the ice cap but near the western coast. They knew
(roughly) where the P-38's landed, so they knew ABOUT where to drill for
them.
The two sites are not related at all. A private outfit found and recovered
the P-38. NSF was drilling for ICE and the climatic evidence captured
within it.

naaa, the lost P38s. Maybe that is when they found them.

...BTW - an interesting little aside, well, to me, anyway: I spent a
night at the site of the Greenland ice coring project by the National
Science

 Foundation in July, 1978...

Were they looking for another B-29?

Did you look at the data Craig provided several days ago? - from an

core samples and it might be a compilation of the work you saw at
Greenland?

[MBZ] Boring Cars! was re: Best W123?

Ok Don wrote: I think the best 123 is a 124 -- just my personal opinion --

I agree. The 124, starting in about 1990, seem SO DIFFERENT than a 123. It's
like it is a whole new generation of car. You can tell they are made by the
same company, but they are VERY different. Of course, I feel that way about
the newer MB's also. I remember when I had a 1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera.
I bought it when I moved to Kansas for law school. I had just left the
dealership and this was a customer's car with really low miles. I think it was
40,000 or so. I knew it was a boring car, but I wanted something to get me
through law school without any drama. The funny thing was the 96 was the last
year for the Ciera and they had been making the car since the early 80's. BUT,
it was really just like the old ones. It had some improvements, fule injection
instead of carbs, better transmissions, etc. But, in general it was basically
the same car as an '82 Ciera. GM (obviously) had a different idea about how to
reinvigorate models and how to make improvements than Mercedes did at the time.

It took me about 2 years to absolutely hate that car. I never had ANY trouble
with it - except the muffler went bad on me. Suddenly. One day it was fine,
then the next day it was LOUD. I put almost 50,000 miles on that car. I would
routinely drive to Lawrence, Kansas from Topeka on the Turnpike at 95 mph. I
abused that poor car. I think I wanted it to break down, so I could get rid of
it.

It was so boring, it was even gray - not silver, but gray with a gray
interior. Boring.

This is pretty much what it looked:
