I would expect the gel to dissolve quicker, but I don't really
know.  When I used powder, I mixed it with hot water (about a
gallon) to get it all dissolved before dumping it in.

You probably don't want suds.  So I would not use Dawn.  Laundry
or dish washer soap should do nicely.

I’ve used "Shout Ultra Gel” as it doesn’t foam like most detergents. Then I do 
a citric acid flush.
