This is something that I choose to do, especially when the head and
block are of dissimilar metals. I have no idea whether Ma Benz
approves or disapproves the use of Hylomar.
I use it because it works as a sealant able to make up for slight
surface variations and imperfections while lubricating the surfaces.
The real benefit is not immediately evident. Every cold/hot cycle
that the engine endures causes scuffing of the gasket surfaces, more
so when dissimilar metals are employed. It is stated by the
manufacturer that Hylomar doesn't dry, rather it protects against
this scuffing with its lubricating qualities.

No, I use locating pins that screw into head bolt holes which are
removed with a left hand threaded knurled rod. I made up several
different sizes on my lathe, years ago. They are very short so one
does not have to lift the head as high as some guide pins I have seen
in more recent years.

Was driving around town yesterday when I spied an '87 300Dt for sale ($7900,
200K, although looks very very nice, esp the new wheels). I called back today,
out of curiosity, to ask the head #. Salesman wasn't quite sure where to look,
so I did my best to explain and he gave me this:

  P (maybe R) 6030181101

Is that a #18 head...or is this not the right number?

I am assuming that all OM603's share the same head gasket issues.

Yes.

Nothing. All modern composition gaskets have sealant applied where
needed.

[MBZ] head gasket sealer

2006-04-01 Thread Bob DuPuy
I'm doing another OM603 head today, actually putting a decent 350SDL
head on a 300SDL. In the past I've always put the gasket on dry, but
this time I'm considering using a sealer like Permatex copper spray on
the head side. There are a few pits around water passages and the like
on the replacement head. The ring where the gasket seals the
combustion chamber is clean and smooth. I'm using the latest version
MB gasket. Any opinions on using a sealer?
