Funny you mention motor mounts because before I looked that was my first guess at the problem. Can a bad motor mount be diagnosed visually? Allan, Yes, but it helps to have a new mount to compare it with what you see. I expect to see about 1/2 of rubber above the metal frame work of the mount. If the mount has sagged, all of the rubber will be down inside the perimeter of the mount.I can't speak to all makes and models just what I own. On my ML, you can barely see the mounts from anywhere! Figure 6-8 years on a set of mounts, then they are either hard or collapsed or both. Re: [MBZ] loose air cleaner, W123 300D/ my $0.02/ check your mounts
There are 2 failures, one where they compress and one where they tear. If they are compressed, you can tell visually but you need to know what a good installed one looks like. You can check for a torn mount by putting pressure under the oil pan with a jack. Just make sure that you spread the load with a piece of wood. As you jack up the engine, the torn mount will become very obvious. If you replace the motor mounts then don't forget the transmission mount. It's the third mount for the engine / transmission assembly.
