Re: [MBZ] okiebenz HVAC service

2017-07-08 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes

With a simple AC unit, the only thing the 24v from the indoor unit should power
is the contactor. The contactor supplies 240v to the compressor, fan, and
associated start/run capacitors.

Maybe your contactor (actually a relay) had a fried coil?

Mitch.

So I replaced the bad run capacitor, contactor, and installed the new hard
start kit and it still would not run. After spending an hour going back
over everything and reviewing the photos I took before removing things I
then discovered the inside unit was not running either. The renters didn't
clue me in to this fact as I didn't go inside I was working outside. With
that knowledge I then went upstairs to the inside unit and it appeared to
have no power. I was about to throw in the towel and call a pro when I
decided to double check things. The control board appeared dead, had no
led lit like it should etc. we just had this replaced last year. So I
tested to see if I was getting power to the board, yes I was. Then I
discovered a 5 amp fuse. Bingo, it was blown. Ran down to flaps got a
pack, replaced it and she fired fight up. I am guessing when the capacitor
blew it must have tripped the fuse on the inside unit? Just guessing.
Anyway I imagine I saved myself untold hundreds of dollars on a service
call. They probably would have wanted to replace the board too. This time
of year I see all sorts of posts on Facebook from people who's ac quit and
I bet they spend a lot of money when it's really not that complicated.
There really is not a whole lot to one of these.

Re: [MBZ] okiebenz HVAC service

2017-07-08 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
On another point, a few years back the fan on the outside condenser unit
on the heat pump quit, it was summer and I (of course) was out of town
for a coupla days so my wife had to deal with it. She called a local
guy, someone came over pretty quick and popped in a new fan motor, all
was good, Cost about $500. About a year, year and half later the motor
quit again, was seized. So I call the guy and get this runaround about
it is past warranty blahblah. So I figure I will just go get another
one so I take that one off and go to some supply house, the guy looks at
it and asks how long it had been running. I say year, year and a half,
whatever it was, and he says well this is a recovery motor and it is
only to be used for a short time until you can get a proper unit on
there, the guys all keep a coupla these on their trucks for problems
like yours if they don't have the proper one available. I tell him that
new motor cost me $500. So he goes and gets a real motor and it is
pretty pricey, like $400, he says these recovery things are like $100,
you need to call your guy back and ask him what the story is, why he
charged you for a real motor and put this thing on. So I get home and
call him up, he comes out and looks at it and says yep our guy put this
thing on and charged you for a real motor. So I say WTF, he tells me he
had to fire the guy because he was putting these things on, saying he
did the real one, then selling the real one and making money on the deal
by selling the real motors to other guys for cheepcheep. He was buying
the recovery motors or using random units he got from other guys or
swapping for them or something. Scamming. So the guy puts on the real
motor and as he is leaving he hands me a bill for a service call, $75.
I was completely incredulous and got into it with him, told him he was
lucky I didn't call the cops on him for scamming me, whether it was his
fired guy or not, I am not paying this. So he leaves. A month or so
later his wife, who did the office work, calls me up and says I am 30d
past due on this bill, can I give her a credit card. So I get into with
her, she gets all pissy with me about it, I finally tell her there is no
way I am paying that bill after you tried to scam me. Last I heard of
them, and never used them again.
