There are actually quite a number of trouble codes that can be set
that will not trigger a chack engine light. There are individual pins
that allow you to dump codes on a number of different computers, and
only those codees that directly relate to emissions are passed on as
check engine. For the best info on M104 codes, take a look on
www.mercedesshop.com forums for anything authored by Steve Brotherton
(?).

There are a lot of a**holes everywhere, some of them manage to get
enough money to travel places where they expect everything to work like
the restaurant down the street. In this case the guy probably arrived
on a cruise ship, they seem to attract those kind of "world travelers."

I went to Santorini a few years back, it was a gorgeous place with nice
people and a lot of good restaurants (at least in Ia where we stayed).
There were some lovely lasses on the beach who were getting the full sun
treatment, nudge nudge wink wink say no more... I made a point of
studying these cultural learnings closely.

Re: [MBZ] re;Knowledge & Kaleb C. Striplin

2007-10-27 Thread Peter Frederick
People are strange.

I collect (well, really accumulate) fountain pens, and some yahoo on
one of the discussion groups won a rather nice solid gold Sheaffer
Snorkel on eBay, and then SENT THE PEN BACK because it was shipped a
week later than he expected (and overseas, too!). He had the temerity
to complain about getting negative feedback from the seller after
leaving a "flamer" negative feedback himself!

Not quite clear on the concept, eh? I don't suppose he thought that
getting something shipped overseas insured is a routine matter for a
private seller.

Enough to make you swear of contact with other humans sometimes!

changeover?
I seem to remember him emailing everybody on the list independantly to tell us
how he'd been screwed.

IIRC his big complaint was something like the glow plug relay had failed or
something else that nobody could have predicted.
Seems like he had another 240D that was total crap and he had to start it by
rolling down hill or something. Seems also like he commuted like 5 miles or

youngling from up north got a, to him, raw deal from a lister down
south. Many sour words from the purchaser, with a few caveat emptor
sort of phrasings from the seller. Continued whining ensued from the
purchaser with a final resolution of sorts when the vehicle in
question was sold to an unsuspecting fool

Gabe made negative comment aimed at Regina. She took issue and it
sort of exploded from there. Many harsh words exchanged. Some came
to her gallant rescue, though I could not see a need to do more than
duck and cover from her draconian response to Gabe.

Re: [MBZ] re;Knowledge & Kaleb C. Striplin

2007-10-26 Thread Hendrik & Fay
There is no problem, only a lister not being happy with the service he
got from this list. I don't see that as a problem but just part of life.
This reminds me of the Ohio man, who is the Ohio man you ask? The Ohio
man is rude and obnoxious American whom we met in Santorini (a little
island in Greece). The story is that we went to breakfast one morning in
a little cafe and a couple of tables across from us where some other
travelers, seeing that they spoke English we introduced ourselves. From
memory there where a couple of girls and a bloke from Ohio. Can't
remember their names and hence we call him the Ohio man.
Anyway the reason we remember the Ohio man is because when the waiter
brought them the menu the Ohio man kicked up a big fuss because
something on the menu was not available. "Why haven't you got this? If
it is on the menu you should have it." and so on, making the waiter feel
not so good as he tried to explain that it was the end of the holiday
season and they had run out of a lot of things and would not be
restocking until the start of the next season.
Anyway after Ohio man left we consoled the waiter that Yanks are
somewhat different and he agreed that they could be quite rude if all
their needs where not met.

Just to be picky, the original CIS (K jetronic) is supposed to be
screwed around with every service in conjunction with a CO meter, the
CIS/E (KE jetronic) is not supposed to be screwed around with unless,
like you said, there is a good reason and you know what you are doing.

And you can call me Hendrik, Fay is the smarter one of the team but
knows sweet FA about cars apart from where to put the key and fuel but
she does tell me when she thinks the car is sick, for which I am ahead
of a lot of other blokes I suppose.

Hendrik or Fay (whichever one posted the response) is correct. If your

We used to have a great resource on the list (remember Marshall?) but he has

And your last point is absolutely correct, if a list member believes we owe

Here is my suggestion, Robb. Post your question, giving as much information

things: 1. There was a response and you missed it -- highly probable; 2. No
one knows; 3. No one wants to talk to you (highly unlikely).

If you think that folks might have not seen your post, then ask it again ...
in a nice way.

You are asking for free advice and you are in no position to demand that we

missed it. Then to write to the list and basically tell the members that
they are useless because they couldn't answer your supposedly 'simple'
question of why a complex fuel injection system would be putting out
high emissions, is not within the spirit of this list as YOU see it.
And now you drag Kaleb into it, is he supposed to be a master MB
technician with years of experience of working on motronic fuel systems
and a few grands worth of tech manuals? Is he supposed to be sitting by
the computer 24/7 just waiting for you to ask questions? No, Kaleb is
the person that is stopping me from telling you exactly what I think of
your attitude.
I might suggest that you take a step back and review what has transpired
and then figure out who is and who is not acting within the spirit of
the list. Oooh that's right, Americans don't take a step back, silly me,
I do apologize for suggesting such a stupid thing.
Anyway, perhaps by now you have the idea that there is no magic screw in
your system that will get you through emissions.

However as a side note: the very early M104 engines in 3 liter
displacement did use the KE jetronic system but the 2.8 and 3.2 used
motronic

A engine running slightly rich is unlikely to produce a trouble code, a
two O2 sensor system may do but the early one O2 sensor ones are
relatively stupid.
Further I think that if there is a code stored in the system then the
check engine light will be on, telling you it is time to spend money.
They should replace that check engine light with a check bank balance
light, perhaps something like this: *$

Your original email was answered on 9/17/07 by Alex Chamberlain who has a
diesel. I believe most of the guys here are diesel owners. Gas cars are a
different beast, you'll need to get codes pulled or build a LED unit to pull
codes, your car is OBD I.

High HC,CO & NOX = replace converter & O2 Sensor, verify tuneup and correct

High HC & NOX & Low CO = Replace converter, tune-up & check lean Fuel Ratio,
leaking exhaust valves.
High HC & CO & Low NOX = Rich Air fuel Ratio, air injection
High HC & Low CO & NOX = Run in converter, tuneup, oil change

Check the emissions form from the test facility to which values are high and
low.

There is also and EGR tube issue with the car you have.

2007-10-25 Thread Rich Thomas
Some years back, not long after I joined the previous list, there was a
guy who would wax eloquently for many pages about random stuff, and take
extreme issue with trivial matters. I think large amounts of whiskey
and being from California might have played a role in his musings, as
they tended to show up late at night. Anyway, I think he got kicked
off, or maybe went to rehab or AA, after suggesting to someone
(Marshall?) "that you, sir, can stick your thumbs in your ass and walk
on your elbows" after about 3 pages of rant about some disagreement on
something trivial. I found his stuff somewhat amusing, like the stuff
you see the bums over by the freeway write on their signs, but I guess
whoever was the list mom got fed up with it. That image was pretty
funny though.

Kaleb, Maybe I should remind you of what the list is about. It is about
sharing ideas and helping to troubleshoot 14 year old cars... whether I paid
for the listing or not. If I paid for the listing up to this posting being
"Now" very helpful but for yours I'd be disappointed with the response.
This posting has gotten alot of feedback: The feedback I was hoping for.
Maybe Kaleb, practicing alittle respect for others and trying to be helpful
may even help you in your own business.
Remember, this list was developed to help guys like me and small shop owners
with other guys experiences from around the country chiming in. Smart ass's
were suppose to be kicked off.
