And if they do I guarantee you’ll smoke the voltage regulator. -D > On Aug 5, 2021, at 4:57 PM, Jim Cathey via Mercedes > wrote: > > Also, the affected exhaust runner (?) will be cooler than the others. > I had a bad plug wire end on the Hercules I6 motor on Big Bertha. > It ran very well at 1800 RPM with its massive flywheel equivalent, > even on only 5 holes. Re: [MBZ] replace plug wires?
Didn't think to check exhaust temps. I have an IR thermometer so I should try that. I did think that the plug on that cylinder was a little more sooty looking than the others. Also, the affected exhaust runner (?) will be cooler than the others. I had a bad plug wire end on the Hercules I6 motor on Big Bertha. It ran very well at 1800 RPM with its massive flywheel equivalent, even on only 5 holes. I had to cut off nearly an inch before it started firing when the socket was screwed back on. Generators don't run at idle, ever. Re: [MBZ] replace plug wires?
The “screw in” type connection is common. AS stated, just trim the end for a fresh start and thread the insulator back on to the wire. -D > On Aug 5, 2021, at 10:53 AM, Allan Streib via Mercedes > wrote: > > I can try that. I can try that. There isn't a ton of slack but probably 1/2" is doable. I might have cut 1/2" off the wire first, but if it seems good, and doesn't misfire at idle, you're probably OK. You can always do a power balance test with a tachometer and a set of plastic "chicken pliers", or a tachometer and pain tolerance. [MBZ] replace plug wires?
OT, but working on my Ghia and when I pulled the spark plug boots off of the plugs, one of the wires just fell out of the boot. The wires are probably 15 years old, but they are silicone wires and still look OK. The pin in the boot had a spiral shape so it looked like it screwed into the end of the wire (as opposed to being crimped, soldered, etc). I tried to screw it back in and it seems to snug up pretty firmly. Should it still be OK or should I just get a new wire set (about $30)?
