I had a Ford 7.3 Diesel hydrolock at idle.. Sudden stop.. It had a head gasket leak and had been setting for some time. I got it started to "check what was wrong with it" [looking for frothing in the upper radiator tank] it ran for about 15 minutes, then started running rough.. then sudden stop... really sudden stop from about 800 RPM.. Tear down found water in cylinders 3&5 [pulled heads first] ... full tear down found #3&5 rods bent. Pre teardown, I pulled the glow plugs [all of them] and cranked the engine while watching for coolant out of the glow plug holes... #3&5 squirted coolant, so at that point, A tear down was going to happen. The buy price went down a lot when I pulled the glow plugs and squirted water... I bought it. then spent another $4,000 on parts and machine shop to build the engine. 4 years and 200,000 miles later, it is still going strong, after everything was made right. I have a 87 190D with a 2.5 L turbo in it. I wonder if that would swap into it. The 190 has been sitting a long time and had been totaled, when it had gotten rear ended. Not quite sure why I still have it or kept it in the first place. Hydro locked setting degraded head gasket or some coolant source running sucked in enough water to hydrolock the engine which caused a sudden stop. Water, being not compressible, remains in one or more cylinders, thus, engine will not "crank". At least one rod is bent, if that is what happened...
