Re: [MBZ] top loading washer
We just ran a bunch of baby cloths thru this thing on the super heavy duty sanitizing setting that had been stain treated and ran thru the old washer AT LEAST 10 times and still there. Only 4 items remained with stains, although the stains are QUITE a bit lighter. And these 4 items I believe may have made it to the drier before so they probably will never come all the way out. We just put a load in it, I am amazed at the very little amount of water it put in there. In fact, you can open the door in the first 8 minutes and we did, and the cloths are somewhat wet, but there does not seem to be any loose water in the tub like you would expect. The sunlight does have a nice sanitizing effect not available in a machine. Lots of UV to blast out the microbes and flushed with fresh air Line-dried clothes often end up stiff and wrinkly, and then need to be ironed. For many people the convenience and softer clothes are worth paying for. I _like_ line-dried stiff clothes. They soften up pretty quickly when worn, and the towels are more absorbent. I hate that oily crap my wife puts in the drier to 'soften' clothes, dry your glasses on those then you've got to go wash them again and find a better thing to dry with. I'm guessing line-dried clothes will last a lot longer, too. We use the indoor line in the winter, or the outdoor line in summer. Swamp coolers work well here, so it's good to hang them indoors pretty much any time, if we wanted, and venting the drier inside would also be a good idea in winter, if the lint issue were properly dealt with. We could use the extra humidity, and it'd be nice not to waste the heat. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] top loading washer
Greetings and Salutations, All. In the mid 60's in the UK, as a present to my hardworking Mom, I bought a washing machine that heated the water, washed and spun the clothes before drying them. It was a well made Italian machine, fairly large, not working or I couldn't have afforded it, and lasted her 'til her death, about 15 years later. The machine was pre-computer-in-everything and needed the gi-normous rotary switch replaced, supplied by the sellers. My cousins scavenged everything not nailed down after the funeral, so it may still be extant somewhere in Kent! I do ramble on, don't I? Fred Moir Lynn MA Klatta on! I think they do, based on my experience. The really big deal is how much less water and detergent they use and still do a good job getting things clean. I've always thought it was sort of a scam that they make separate units at all. They can make more profit selling you two appliances that take twice the space, even though it would be fairly straightforward to build them as one, since they're similar devices with a lot of parts in common. It's coming up on 2 years and has worked fine. I had an incident under warranty that really wasn't a warranty issue, but they didn't charge me for it (which was nice.) Dummy me, who ALWAYS reads the directions for everything, forgot that there is a sort of sump in these things that has to be cleaned out every 6 months or so. It's not a big deal to do, maybe takes about 20 minutes at most and just a bucket and a 1/4 socket. Anyway, since all the nasty crap that accumulates down there over time, of you don't drain it regularly it develops a nasty smell, as you might expect. As soon as I described the problem to the tech, he just chuckled and showed me how to drain and clean it. While LG and other imports are nice, they were too pricey for us, and we also had no need for features like steam and the like. I think we got the GE at Lowe's on sale for around $700 including tax, which I thought was a good deal. I will tell you that it definitely holds a LOT more than a top-loader, which would be especially important for you with a bunch of youngsters in the house. Re: [MBZ] top loading washer
Hmmm, could be a good plan. My older Benz is a wagon, it has a fair amount of room and a nice radio. Some curtains, shag carpet, a beanbag, and a lava lamp and it could be pretty nice. I could apply for gummint cheese and get a bailout of some sort, increase my fleet, get them a gummint job (they are shovel ready) or something with the UAW, and live off them. Plan needs a little polishing, but I think I could pull it off. I use biodegradable electrons for my emails, they break down after a few days and get recycled. So no legal trail. --R R A Bennell wrote: No, your sister in law will sue you when she gets hurt due to this alteration to the machine and your insurance company will deny as there is ample evidence of your inappropriate behaviour published on the net. Re: [MBZ] top loading washer
Maytags have gone down significantly in quality, and there are a number of models you definitely want to avoid due to high repair costs. Troll around in some of the appliance repair forums online and you'll get a good idea of what to/not to buy - that's what I did. We bought a GE front loader about a year and a half ago, and there is no question that we use a lot less water and energy in general since it was put into service. I'm the one responsible for wash around the house (the wife would destroy our clothing if I didn't do the wash!) so I feel pretty confident in my statements. Not to mention the drop in the water bill... Among other priorities, we wanted to bring the laundry up to the first floor from the basement. So I converted our pantry into a pantry/laundry, installed the plumbing and electrics, and we purchased new, full-size stackable machines to save space: Whirlpool Duet front loading washer and dryer . The machines are quiet, energy efficient, and do a great job. She loves the machines... and I have had no problems and no complaints. (Our previous machine, a Kenmore purchased in 1979, stayed with the old house, and was still running fine, btw.) I agree with Barry's comments below re: water use and energy efficiency. I also agree that there seems to be a general consensus among the repairmen that Maytag is not the Gold Standard it once was. Some of their products were apparently made by Samsung.
