We just ran a bunch of baby cloths thru this thing on the super heavy
duty sanitizing setting that had been stain treated and ran thru the old
washer AT LEAST 10 times and still there. Only 4 items remained with
stains, although the stains are QUITE a bit lighter. And these 4 items
I believe may have made it to the drier before so they probably will
never come all the way out.

We just put a load in it, I am amazed at the very little amount of water
it put in there. In fact, you can open the door in the first 8 minutes
and we did, and the cloths are somewhat wet, but there does not seem to
be any loose water in the tub like you would expect. When it started,
it started putting water in, for probably a minute or less, then that
was it. Amazing.

The sunlight does have a nice sanitizing effect not available in a
machine. Lots of UV to blast out the microbes and flushed with fresh

Line-dried clothes often end up stiff and wrinkly, and then need to
be ironed. For many people the convenience and softer clothes are
worth paying for.

I _like_ line-dried stiff clothes. They soften up pretty quickly
when worn, and the towels are more absorbent. I hate that oily
crap my wife puts in the drier to 'soften' clothes, dry your glasses
on those then you've got to go wash them again and find a better
thing to dry with. I'm guessing line-dried clothes will last a
lot longer, too. We use the indoor line in the winter, or the
outdoor line in summer. Swamp coolers work well here, so it's
good to hang them indoors pretty much any time, if we wanted,
and venting the drier inside would also be a good idea in winter,
if the lint issue were properly dealt with. We could use the
extra humidity, and it'd be nice not to waste the heat.

Dryer hose aimed into the middle of the room, with a nylon stocking over the end

Line-dried clothes often end up stiff and wrinkly, and then need to
be ironed. For many people the convenience and softer clothes are
worth paying for.

Bingo. I'm using a Fisher-Paykel washer and a late 1960's vintage

dryer to a $650 washer. That goes double for a $1100 dryer to match

There isn't much work for the dryer to do if you have a modern high

The front loader/horizontal style is supposedly gentler than the upright
style. I've noticed that I get less lint in the drain with my LG than
before with my old upright.

The high speed generally refers to the spin speed, the horizontal
washers tend to spin faster and get more water out of the clothes,
compared to the uprights. The complete wash cycle actually takes longer
than an upright though.

Mine has three spin speeds, the highest being 1000rpm.
In the light duty cycles, like delicate, or perma press, the default spin
speed is 300rpm, and I can manually adjust it up to 600rpm, but if I try to step
it up to 1000rpm it refuses and scolds me with loud beeps. you bleeping moron,
you can't spin delicates at 1000rpm

The way I look at it, by the time you hit 300rpm, the clothes are plastered
solidly against the drum walls, and the only damage you can possibly do by
spinning faster is press wrinkles into the cloth. Said wrinkles should go away
in a tumble dry.

My statement about high speed washers vs drying time was solely in reference to
the fact that spin speeds are getting a lot higher these days, and towels come
out almost as dry as if you used the extractor at the laundromat. I can pull a
bath towel out of the washer and dry my body with it, but it's a lot more

Greetings and Salutations, All.
In the mid 60's in the UK, as a present to my hardworking Mom, I
bought a washing machine that heated the water, washed and spun the
clothes before drying them. It was a well made Italian machine,
fairly large, not working or I couldn't have afforded it, and lasted
her 'til her death, about 15 years later. The machine was
pre-computer-in-everything and needed the gi-normous rotary switch
replaced, supplied by the sellers. My cousins scavenged everything
not nailed down after the funeral, so it may still be extant somewhere in Kent!

I do ramble on, don't I?

I think they do, based on my experience. The really big deal is how much less
water and detergent they use and still do a good job getting things clean.

Granted, I have very soft water, but I have gotten to the point where I use
half of the recommended amount of detergent and stuff still comes out very
clean.

True. The spin speeds are definitely higher than the top loaders, but the
front loaders take longer for a similar cycle.

I think my regular cycle is about 55 minutes long. If I'm doing whites with
bleach (an extra rinse) it can run as high as 75-80 minutes.

Yes, that's true in pleasant weather. If it's raining or is below

Bingo. I'm using a Fisher-Paykel washer and a late 1960's vintage avocado

washer. That goes double for a $1100 dryer to match the $1200 washers.
There isn't much work for the dryer to do if you have a modern high speed
washer. If I had to buy a new dryer, it would cost me less than $400.

2009-04-01 Thread LWB250

It's coming up on 2 years and has worked fine. I had an incident under
warranty that really wasn't a warranty issue, but they didn't charge me for it
(which was nice.)

Dummy me, who ALWAYS reads the directions for everything, forgot that there is
a sort of sump in these things that has to be cleaned out every 6 months or
so. It's not a big deal to do, maybe takes about 20 minutes at most and just a
bucket and a 1/4 socket.

Anyway, since all the nasty crap that accumulates down there over time, of you
don't drain it regularly it develops a nasty smell, as you might expect.

As soon as I described the problem to the tech, he just chuckled and showed me
how to drain and clean it.

While LG and other imports are nice, they were too pricey for us, and we also
had no need for features like steam and the like. I think we got the GE at
Lowe's on sale for around $700 including tax, which I thought was a good deal.

I will tell you that it definitely holds a LOT more than a top-loader, which
would be especially important for you with a bunch of youngsters in the house.
It amazes me how much I can cram into mine

Well I worked on it and found out the lid safety switch was not
switching, so I bypassed it and disconnected the wi-fi receiver just to
make sure it doesn't get any more ideas. I'll have to check my other
appliances too, or put some jammers around them.

I went to allmattresstags.com and downloaded replacement tags which I

Hmmm, could be a good plan. My older Benz is a wagon, it has a fair
amount of room and a nice radio. Some curtains, shag carpet, a beanbag,
and a lava lamp and it could be pretty nice. I could apply for gummint
cheese and get a bailout of some sort, increase my fleet, get them a
gummint job (they are shovel ready) or something with the UAW, and live
off them. Plan needs a little polishing, but I think I could pull it off.

Maytags have gone down significantly in quality, and there are a number of
models you definitely want to avoid due to high repair costs. Troll around in
some of the appliance repair forums online and you'll get a good idea of what
to/not to buy - that's what I did.

We bought a GE front loader about a year and a half ago, and there is no
question that we use a lot less water and energy in general since it was put
into service.

I'm the one responsible for wash around the house (the wife would destroy our
clothing if I didn't do the wash!) so I feel pretty confident in my statements.
Not to mention the drop in the water bill...

 Hi Kaleb,

We recently downsized to a smaller house.  Among other
priorities, we wanted to bring the laundry up to the first
floor from the basement.  So I converted our pantry
into a pantry/laundry, installed the plumbing and electrics,
and we purchased new, full-size stackable machines to save
space:   Whirlpool Duet front loading washer
and dryer .  The machines are quiet, energy efficient,
and do a great job.  She loves the machines... and I
have had no problems and no complaints.  (Our previous
machine, a Kenmore purchased in 1979, stayed with the old
house, and was still running fine, btw.)

I agree with Barry's comments below re: water use and
energy efficiency.  I also agree that there seems to be
a general consensus among the repairmen that Maytag is not
the Gold Standard it once was.  Some of their products
were apparently made by Samsung.  Whirlpool has bought
them out, along with a few other manufacturers.

 Anybody
have one of these front loaders, or have shopped for them?
 Best brand
to look at? Ones to stay away from. Was looking at those
 Frigidairs
but they seem kind of flimsy. Wondered about LG and samsung
 as compared

  Kaleb-
We have a Frigidaire Affinity ATFB6000 That I
 inherited when my Mom passed
away last year. I believe that my Mom had picked it as
 it was the 'Consumer
Reports' best buy at the time. I think that it is
 almost two years old now
and we have had no problems plus it seems to clean
 well. These new machines
work a bit different than the older ones as they
 tumble slowly one direction
then the other and the spin is quite fast. They no
 longer have a
transmission as the motor reverses direction and
 drives the tub with a
toothed belt. Because the spin is faster the clothes
 get much dryer so the
dryer has to work less to dry the clothes. It is very
 important to use only
the HE(High Efficiency)low sudsing detergent or the
 over sudsing of the
regular detergent will eventually gum up the works and
 cause problems. The
HE is a little difficult to find some places right now
 as it is fairly new
yet but in the not too distant future I believe it may
 be the norm for all
new machines. I think my wife gets it at COSTCO. The
 other words to the
wise, that I learned by reading up on the things, is
 to be sure and leave
the door ajar till things dry out in the tub or you
 may end up with some
mold. I don't know if you have a water shortage
problem where you are but we
do here in So. Calif. And these machines use very
 little water compared to
the top loaders and I believe they use less
electricity as well. From what I
have heard the new Maytags are not the same as the old
 since they were
bought out by someone but that's just what I've heard.
 The best way to find
out about reliability is if you have an indy appliance
 repairman that you
can trust to give some unbiased informed about
 reliability and maintenance
  costs.

[MBZ] top loading washer

2009-03-30 Thread tom tomscat

Hi Kaleb,

We recently downsized to a smaller house. Among other priorities, we wanted to
bring the laundry up to the first floor from the basement. So I converted our
pantry into a pantry/laundry, installed the plumbing and electrics, and we
purchased new, full-size stackable machines to save space: Whirlpool Duet
front loading washer and dryer . The machines are quiet, energy efficient, and
do a great job. She loves the machines... and I have had no problems and no
complaints. (Our previous machine, a Kenmore purchased in 1979, stayed with
the old house, and was still running fine, btw.)

I agree with Barry's comments below re: water use and energy efficiency. I
also agree that there seems to be a general consensus among the repairmen that
Maytag is not the Gold Standard it once was. Some of their products were
apparently made by Samsung. Whirlpool has bought them out, along with a few
other manufacturers.

Thinking about replacing my 10 year old top loading Maytag. Anybody
have one of these front loaders, or have shopped for them? Best brand
to look at? Ones to stay away from. Was looking at those Frigidairs
but they seem kind of flimsy. Wondered about LG and samsung as compared
to say, a Maytag which I am used to. I know Maytag has always been the
best in the past.

 Kaleb-
We have a Frigidaire Affinity ATFB6000 That I inherited when my Mom passed
away last year. I believe that my Mom had picked it as it was the 'Consumer
Reports' best buy at the time. I think that it is almost two years old now
and we have had no problems plus it seems to clean well. These new machines
work a bit different than the older ones as they tumble slowly one direction
then the other and the spin is quite fast. They no longer have a
transmission as the motor reverses direction and drives the tub with a
toothed belt. Because the spin is faster the clothes get much dryer so the
dryer has to work less to dry the clothes. It is very important to use only
the HE(High Efficiency)low sudsing detergent or the over sudsing of the
regular detergent will eventually gum up the works and cause problems. The
HE is a little difficult to find some places right now as it is fairly new
yet but in the not too distant future I believe it may be the norm for all
new machines. I think my wife gets it at COSTCO. The other words to the
wise, that I learned by reading up on the things, is to be sure and leave
the door ajar till things dry out in the tub or you may end up with some
mold. I don't know if you have a water shortage problem where you are but we
do here in So. Calif. And these machines use very little water compared to
the top loaders and I believe they use less electricity as well. From what I
have heard the new Maytags are not the same as the old since they were
bought out by someone but that's just what I've heard. The best way to find
out about reliability is if you have an indy appliance repairman that you
can trust to give some unbiased informed about reliability and maintenance
 costs.

I'm gonna stop this list. Yesterday after these msgs about washers
showed up mine crapped out, just after it filled with water. I don't
think it has a wireless connection to my computer, how do it know?

How old is your washer? Every washer since the 60's has had a wifi
connection direct to this list.
