If the gasket behind the lift pump went bad, where it mates to the main pump, wouldnt we be seeing engine oil? There is a copper crush under the hand pump that would leak fuel. On Jan 19, 2018 3:07 PM, "Curley McLain via Mercedes" wrote: > That, plus tighten the lift pump, or put a new gasket b

That, plus tighten the lift pump, or put a new gasket behind it. Since it was recently disturbed, it is the most likely source of the leak. Fred Moir via Mercedes January 19, 2018 at 2:42 PM Max. On an 123 I'd look at the bottom or side plate for seepage. A gen

It is coming off the bottom of the injection pump somehow, onto the cross member. Leaving little puddles everywhere I park. I will have a closer look this weekend. The lift pump is new but maybe I need to tighten it. On Jan 17, 2018 1:51 PM, "Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes" < mercedes@okiebenz.com

Take a couple paper towels and tape them flat over the injectors, the metal lines and the return lines. Run the engine for a couple minutes, it should help narrow down the issue pretty quick. Are the clamps in place on the metal lines? They'll vibrate and break if not. Thats pretty obvious when

if raw fuel is smoking, it is almost always time to change the return lines. it is possible for the injector holder to leak, if the seal was reused or not properly torqued. Both will result in fuel surrounding the injector holder, getting hot and smoking off. Meade Dillon via Mercedes

My first thought is that the return lines from the injectors are failing. Given Randy's caution re: high pressure leak, shut off engine and feel the return lines with naked fingers, smell them afterwards if you can't feel or see fuel on them. Check the cigar hose and other rubber hoses as well. G

If you think it could be a high pressure line leak, then be very careful looking for it. Do not run your fingers around in there when the motor is running. If you cannot find it, you likely will when it gets a bit worse. RB On 17/01/2018 1:15 PM, Karl Wittnebel via Mercedes wrote: 85 300td i
