Re: [MBZ] w124 door check strap
It's one of those things that if you lubricate it, it will last longer but who does that? I usually grab any newish ones I see in wrecks and keep em as spares, I think from memory the wreckers charge 5 bucks or nothing if buy a pile of other stuff. I had one last me a little less than four years. I think it's an overly complicated design. The door check in my Audi consists of a two step roller cam and a simple "S" spring--dirt simple, completely external and not much to wear out. Hopefully MB has a simpler and more robust setup in its newer vehicles. Not a great design, they have a limited (often VERY short) lifetime. At least they aren't expensive, and not all that bad to replace. The door liner gets easier with practice, I can do one in 5 min now! I've never heard of the steel ones breaking in any other way except blowing the balls out the side of the slider. It was the old-style pot-metal ones that had leaf springs and rollers that always broke the bodies. Weird. My money's on improper installation, perhaps they tightened down the rear bolt first, the easy-to-get-to one, then did the front two? That'd put a lot of stress on the ears. If they had made the old-style ones with steel bodies, _that_ would be the gold standard for door check straps. Come to think of it, that's sort of what's in a 107. What fails there is the lubrication of the rollers, then it rubs itself to death. (Near-death anyway. I've owned four 107's, and none of the straps have actually fully failed, though I have had to work on two of them. The oldest two, driver's doors only.) -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
[MBZ] w124 door check strap
Wife goes out to 92 wagon, clack clack, comes back in complains door is busted.. Sure enough door check strap makes wicked clacking noise, also it jumps about in the door. Drop by dealer to get a new one, clue if it's in stock there you wonder how long they last. In looking the old one is not the original, the originals are painted. However the broken one was made in 92, and had broken both ears off. Don't these usually have the check balls fail? Versus breaking the ears. Take door apart, replace, reassemble door completely. Check things. Grrr bottom front hook is not in place, oh fine Take door apart again, grab teenager this time to help ensure *all* hooks are in place. That took 15 minutes and three attempts. Reassemble, find out I've busted seat switch nub. Grrr.. Attempt to glue, then recall I've a spare switch so I steal parts from it. Door check stop now happy, makes nice snicking grease related sounds now.
