Re: [MBZ] why is my SDL so loud?

I think its probably a trashed engine. Might as well let me take it off your
hands. Ill give you $500.

Thanks. I suspected injectors also but wanted to see what others
though. Will probably check the chain stretch also. BTW, just switched
to M1.

If it goes away with fuel treatment and then comes back, though, it's
time to check the nozzle pattern, likely they are getting a bit worn.
Low injection pressure will make them open early, too, same result --
 injector knock at idle.

[MBZ] why is my SDL so loud?

2007-03-08 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
My current 87 SDL with 230k miles is very loud at idle. Belonged to an
old man before I got it and had trap on it. Black smoke alot when I
first got it but after trap removed and italian tuneups smokes much
less. On cold startup smokes alot and runs rough for a few minutes then
is smooth. Cold idle is REALLY loud, warm still too loud. About a loud
or louder than a 617. Glow plugs test fine as far as the cold starting
goes. Tried everything to get the idle to be quiet like a 603 should
be. Ran a can of purge thru the other day and ran quiet while running
on the purge but back to loud after a while. Im thinking the injectors
need to be replaced but wanted to see what marshall thought, if he is
reading this. I guess you could say its nailing but not really, just
loud combustion I guess.

Mine clatters more than I like after the new head gasket, but it's
becoming intermittant, so I suspect it will go away. Otherwise, I got
some grit in the lines when I had the head off and may have to replace
a nozzle or two.

Good luck -- they run s nice when they are working well -- mine is
like a new car now, totally smooth, no vibration and no engine noise
cruising. I suppose something silly like sealing the exhaust might
have something to do with that, though~

Change the oil filter again in 1000 mile or so if the head is crappy
looking --- it will be plugged with re-suspended sludge!
