Re: [MBZ] xenon bulbs burned & purple...
Depending on what you have for lamps/lens the higher wattage bulbs could melt things because of higher heat. Normally this is not a problem for mercedes assembles that are not USA specific. You are running 20% higher wattage thru the wires, normally this is not a problem for mercedes, but your milage may vary depending on the year. This might require installing relays and running extra wiring, likely I would do that for my w123 since the wiring there is technically marginal for current flow. But technically it's not needed to be done. now if you run 100W bulbs the two issues above become much higher/ riskier On Nov 9, 2007, at 2:06 PM, Christopher McCann wrote: > "but at the expense/risk of > running higher wattage." > > What is the expense/risk? "but at the expense/risk of running higher wattage." What is the expense/risk? Higher wattage bulbs don't last as long? I'll note this is fairly new to car bulbs but is has been used in Philips 90W IR outdoor bulbs for awhile now. Osram also makes a Hyper H4 which is 70/65w versus the 60/55w normally found. In my reading the Hyper bulbs get the nod for the brightest bulb, but at the expense/risk of running higher wattage. Otherwise apparently the Philips are the brightest H4 bulbs at the moment using normal wattage. > Do the HID bulbs last SUPER long? That would justify the price, in > my mind. Yes regular tungsten based bulbs are rated in 100 of hours using a standardized test procedure. HID bulbs are rated in thousands of hours, thus for example my burned out bulb is the original one used in a car which had day time running headlamps for a 10 year period. They speak of the bulb life as the "life of the car" we mercedes owners know that means heh? 7 years or something... I note that on the island here I always see Smart cars running with burn out headlamps since they are DRL and use H7 high intensity bulbs which have a low hundreds of hours rating and of course replacement of the bulb is a non-trivial affair. Got it. I thought of upgrading the SD to HID (High Int. Dis.), but it was too expensive, so I upgraded to H4/HB2/9003, which has made a world of difference. Do the HID bulbs last SUPER long?
