So lock-tight is out of the question? ;) There is a minimum torque for those adjusters as I remember, so if you can turn them by hand, certainly they are worn out and need to be replaced. They need to be fairly stiff so they don't do what yours are -- unscrew or screw themselves down.

Any special tool to pry down the valve? I believe those are essentially the same as the ones on the M117 V8 -- remove the retainer spring, pry down on the valve and sideways and the rocker arm should pop off the adjuster. Valve closed, lobe away from the rocker. Hang on to the thrust

I reveresed the coil wiring and took the dwell meter from under the battery, like Dan(benzbarn) suggested and I was able to get set the dwell properly. 41*. Thanks Dan! Woohoo! Now I'm trying to set the timing and I'm turning the distributor and every thing is fine at about 1000 RPM 10 BTDC.

BTW, The fast idle screw is missing from my carburators. Would this be related to this problem? Is the fast idle screw, just a screw w/ a spring? is that something I can get at home depot? if so doe anybody know the screw size length? Thanks George -- Original message

Thanks Dan, The Haynes manual and the factory manual, http://mb.braingears.com/114_115_Disk1/program/Engine/Repair/00-0.pdf , both said to use 41 for the dwell, and your last email mentioned 30 was for the aluminium distrubutor and you where going to check on the metal 003 distributor. Thanks
