You have quite a few more options available, due to your access to lots of used $500 vehicles, from which you can pull a good running OM603.96 to swap in, if your OM603.97 fails. I'm not much of an S-class fan (too big), but I do find the W140 to be an intriguing consideration...very tempting.

Yup, I bought my Vanagon on ebay, and sent a $400 down payment since I couldn't make it down there for another month. I flew down to LA with the remainder and drove it back without a hitch...still haven't had a hitch. It was a great experience and a wonderful seller, with no regrets. YMMV On
