Hummer HX. If GM can't sell Hummer, it will be axed and there are no
buyers.

Hummer died with the H1. The rest is just lipstick on the GM pig.

Maybach. Terminally ill. Gone in 2012

Too bad. Maybe in 10 years I could afford one!
A shame there were no diesels...

Viper DEAD. For sale with no buyers.

Those, I kind of liked.

Reminds me of Ford. When finally on the verge of being forced into a government
recall of the warping 3.8L cylinder heads, they admitted responsibility and did
a nearly useless voluntary recall when the affected engines were 6-12 years old.

Everybody whose engines already failed got nothing. Everybody whose engines
failed during the recall got the warped heads milled flat and new gaskets
installed, but only if the car had less than 100k on it. Then a year or two
later, they just ended the voluntary recall. Mine failed during the recall, but
it had 139k gentle highway miles on it, so I had to fix it myself. (I bought it
from a schoolteacher who lived 1/2 mile from the freeway and taught in another town)

Is this really a fix? Seems that it must be either a design or
manufacturing flaw if so many were warping. After the milling, wouldn't
it just eventually warp again?

All depends on the cause of the warped heads. If they were out of tolerance
at the time of manufacture then the problem is solved.

Don't know. The shop that rebuilt my heads said that they would be stable,
having already warped into their preferred shape. It's got 186k on it now and
it's starting to use oil. I should have taken the exhaust and oil pan off and
reringed the pistons when I had it apart in 2002.

IIRC from a machine shop course, castings and some other parts have to be
kept in a high temp oven for a period of hours and gradually brought down to
room temp in order to relieve the stresses from casting. If the stress
relief time is too short, the parts can eventually warp. Probably a
temptation on the part of management to reduce the time in the oven to an
absolute minium.
The instructor, an expert retired machinist, had been a favorite of Henry
Ford who made him director of the Ford Museum. He was so knowledgeable,
machinists who worked at Honeywell on inertial platforms for rockets would
take the course just so they could ask him about their unique machining
problems such as machining thin silicone to close tolerances.
