PAG is a sponge. And I believe it reacts with water to form acids.
AFAIK, R12 compatible oils aren't particularly hygroscopic.

2016-12-02 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Maybe your strap wrench is better than my cheapo Hazard Fraught strap
wrench? Maybe I hadn't splurged on the strap wrench ten years ago? I
dunno, it's all a blur now, I spent one frenzied night trying to R the
compressor with an overhaul planned while out, couldn't get the old clutch
off because I had no special tool and that sucker was ON that shaft tight,
I ended up using screwdrivers and chisels and maybe a three-arm puller and
needless to say once that clutch was off it went straight into the trash,
and I had to source a new clutch.

The only thing that really gave me pause was getting the clutch gap right,
they are shimmed, and I think the procedure says to install the clutch with
original shim, check gap, and then remove clutch and adjust shim if
required. Lacking a special tool to remove the clutch if the gap was
wrong, I rolled the dice and the gap was right on the first install. Ten
years later, still trucking along.

If I ever do the job again, I will have that special tool, either rented or
bought. That is the one thing I firmly remember.

Thanks, Rick and Peter.

Just got done watching Bob’s videos on resealing. Looks pretty straightforward
and not difficult at all. I ordered a resealing kit with the shaft protector
on eBay for about $23 just now, so I’ll probably take this on next week.

Any reason why one couldn’t use compressor oil rather than mineral oil for
reassembly?

Also, I assume there are charts somewhere that will give the amount of oil to
fill the compressor with before reinstalling it? I’ll do some Googling….
