She sounds like she's going to be on the large side!

We've had German Shepherds for 34 years -- as long as we've had Mercedes.

A picture of our litter girl -- 15 months old, 65 pounds, and being
trained as a seizure alert dog for my wife -- as we were waiting for the
Tram to take us to the top of Sandia Peak in Albuquerque is attached. We
had dinner at the restaurant at the top and she laid underneath the table
on my parka, well behaved.

Thanks for sharing that, Craig. I am sorry to hear that your wife has
seizures. I have recently just read about seizure dogs. IT IS AMAZING. I could
not believe what I was reading! For those who don't know, seizure alert dogs
can tell when a person is about to have a seizure BEFORE the person knows they
are going to have one. The dog alerts the person and is also trained to
protect them during the seizure (laying between them and objects, etc). Craig,
correct me if I'm wrong. That is my understanding. The book I read said that
doctors are not sure how seizure dogs work but they think the dogs can smell
changes in brain chemistry that precede a seizure!

THe newest thing is melanoma detection dogs. Absolutely amazing. There are
also termite sniffing dogs and a bunch of other working dog stuff that German
Shepherds excel at. The German Shepherd (a fascinating story in itself as to
how the breed came about...and contemporaneous with the early years of Daimler
MG and Benz et Cie.) is an amazing all around dog. Many breeds to certain
things better, but all around, i don't think any dog beats them.

I'm glad you are happy with your dog. Mine is sleeping next to my chair
right now. I am NOT an "animal lover freak", but there is something truly
extraordinary about the bond that develops between a man and his faithful dog.

  All the best,

  Chris

P.S. Yes, Anke will be big. And she is not at all fat - just big! Her feet
are still huge, so she's got a ways to go yet! Gentle as a lamb with our one
year old...really neat to watch them interact.

Peter, Larry and Marshall,

Thanks for explaining. I understand perfectly now. That is ingenious and
makes alot of sense to me. Unfortunately, my friend (who I was helping last
night) does NOT get it and so he just torqued them up. I'll report to y'all
what happens a little down the road. I forwarded him more of the e-mails that
came today, so maybe it will sink in...I hope so or he's gonna be sorry.

Again, thanks alot for the explanation and enjoy your thanksgiving.

  Chris

Chris,

You are correct. Our dog's grandfather can warn his owner typically 20
minutes before a seizure. Once he warned an hour beforehand. Since the
talent to detect seizures runs in dog families, we're expecting good
things from Ori.

Actually, they can detect all kinds of cancers.

I hadn't heard that, but it doesn't surprise me.

And she'll be very protective of the little one as they both grow up.

Now that is downright handy!

First I've heard of such a use for a dog. I can only imagine how much
safer your wife just fell.

Craig, your GSD is a good looking one. And Chris, yes, I agree that these
German breeds "go with" these autos. I love to drive around with my
Doberman's head out the window. It's class and more class.

And the siezure detection dogs are great. I love that dogs can be given jobs
to do, and society, and the law recognize it.

It's paradoxical how dogs are given such responsibility (for example, their
scent identification of a crime suspect being admissible in court, or their
role in locating disaster victims) yet in other areas of society it's "no
pets allowed!"

Yes, and I've heard of truffle-sniffing dogs, or was that pigs - the
truffles are detected by the animal and sold for good money. This is
somewhere in Europe I believe. Anyway, my late Dobie was trained to find
money.

A rememberance just hit me: One day at an obedience trial around Lancaster,
PA I saw Winnefried Strickland (the "First Lady of German Shepherd
Obedience"). And even more interestingly, her car was a 300 SE,or SD (I
didn't find out which at the time). Silvery blue in color. You know, all
dogs are required to be leashed at these obedience events, but Ms.
Strickland sat op her lawn chair with a small pack of GSDs around her loose.
She could get away with it.

Hi Craig,
Sorry to hear about your wife's health problems. I had 2 seizures in
the 80s and thankfully have had no more although I am disabled with a MS
type disease (nerve damage) - don't know if the 2 problems are related..
One of our Chiuahuah's has seizures - all 2.5#'s of her - I wonder if a 80#
G Shep would be appropriate to watch after her? {lol} Ya gotta laugh!
I pray I never have another seizure - it frightens all around at the
time. Thankfully I remember little of it.

God luck - those G Sheps sound very special indeed!
