We've installed a "mouse fence" around the carport - 10" high aluminum
flashing all the way around. You have to lift and move the section behind
the car you're going to drive, but since we typically only drive each one
once a week, that's not a big deal.
So far, no more indications of mice in the car or truck, and none the traps
inside the fence, but then again, I didn't catch any around the cars before
we installed the fence. However, one of the traps was carried 20 feet or so
down the drive one night, and now it's missing altogether, so I'm thinking
I'm dealing with something larger than a mouse. Hence, I'm off to install
and electric fence wire an inch or two above the "mouse fence" to
discourage (or hopefully kill) what ever is prowling around the cars at
night.

I had that earlier this summer too, chipmunks caught in the trap would be just

That, or something larger is going for the mouse caught by the trap.
That's what was happening here earlier in the summer. I wanted to stake
the traps to the ground, but never got the right stuff to do it.

That, or something larger is going for the mouse caught by the trap.

You really could do a much better job in replying to the pertinent message.
Spoken like a non-outdoorsman. You have no idea about rabbits at all, you've 
never seen them bite one another to chase of an interloper, you've never seen 
them attacked and killed by dogs or cats. You don't even bother to check if 
your local park has a trapping program because they already have too many 
rabbits. Your plan is just to dump your problems and let somebody else take 
care of them...

trap without setting it off unless I use the crunchy style and push the

I am not into "saving" the bunny.  I am merely protecting the hard work and
investment in a small vegetable garden by attempting - fruitlesslly so far
- to humanely a wabbit and move him a few hundred yards away to a new
site.  How is this worse than killing and eating it?

you're merely wasting your time, that rabbit is back at your place before you 
are...
If you really want to just protect your garden get real with your fence. If you 
really want rabbits removed then kill them. Thats the only real solution.
When you move an animal into new territory (real new territory, miles away) it 
will die. It will either be killed by predators since it doesn't know where to 
hide, or it will starve or dehydrate or get hit by a car trying to follow you 
home.What I'm saying in that situation is that you've doomed the animal to die 
even if you aren't actually personally doing the killing. Since your method 
means in most cases the animal will suffer a slow and painful death please 
explain how it is more humane than a pellet to the head?

Kill it, eat it. and season it with the herbs and vegetables from your

I'm saying that in your example the rabbit dies either way. If you really want 
to save his life leave him alone but don't go being all smug that you've "Saved 
the little bunny" what you've done is doomed him to a short life of pain and 
terror. Where my pellet gun ends his life cleanly with little pain. I'm a man, 
I do the killing myself. You farm it out to somebody else and then claim it 
isn't happening.
Are you sure you don't work in the healthcare system?

You keep using the word humane but I don't think you know what it means.What 
you're really doing is live trapping a rabbit that will die later as a result 
of your actions. If its lucky it'll get hit by a car and killed cleanly. Much 
more likely it'll starve to death because it can't access food because the 
other rabbits in the area you've transported it to won't let it. Its also quite 
likely it'll be attacked by dogs or cats or other critters.
A good trap kills clean, the animal feels that one bite and its all over, no 
suffering.
So with your trap you doom the animal to suffer, I kill it cleanly. Tell me who 
is more humane?
You claim to never kill but eat plants and animals that would not have died 
were it not for your appetite. I'm not saying its wrong to survive, the lion 
eats the antelope and never considers it. What I'm saying is that you need to 
recognize that other things die so that you might live, don't minimize that by 
saying you don't kill, your very survival ensures that others die. Even 
vegetarians eat plants that would otherwise have fed wildlife.

Fellow out at the lake suggests using thread and tying a raisin onto the 
trap. The mouse has to work at it to get it and that sets off the trap.
We have been using peanut butter but the devils can lick it out of the 
trap without setting it off unless I use the crunchy style and push the

This is the time of year to start trappin the meeces. They'll be wanting to get 
inside as the cold weather comes on, reducing the population pressure outside 
reduces their need to get inside. I've been very successful trapping chipmunks 
this year and have accidentally (incidentally?) caught a couple mice while I 
was at it.
I'm going to try the peppermint oil trick this year. Supposedly you cut it 
50/50 with water and spray all around the foundation of the house...
For the snowmobiles I have yogurt cups with mothballs in the footwells, keeps 
the mice out good. Maybe you could put some cups of mothballs under the car?

That's a very good idea, but you wouldn't have to make little parachutes. Just 
tie helium balloons to their bellies and let them float away. They'll drift for 
miles and you'll know how far when you start hearing reports of tiny alien 
invaders. 

Another solution would be baby pythons from the Everglades. They have enormous 
appetites and will follow mice wherever they go. When they get too big, you can 
ship then to Andrew where they can feed on the rabbits.

If DDT was as bad as "they" want us to believe, I'd dust my hostas 
with DDT.  Unfortunately, the wabbits can eat the DDT and the hostas 
with impunity, and they breed like...  (wait for it...)

For mice, I have a five gallon metal kerosene can.  

The dregs of a keg of beer get installed in the lower portion of the can, about 
eight inches.  Mice will try to get in to enjoy the beer.  Rat size hole at the 
top, slick side, deep enough that only the rats can touch bottom.  Mice lose 
hope and become rat food while the rat pickles in the beer.  Slugs drop in as 
well.

Feral cats who stalk my chickens find the pointy end of a .177 pellet injected 
into their hind end.  Low pumps so not fatal, just painful.  Applied enough 
times, the cat learns to avoid my place.  

Squirrels are too stupid to catch on quickly, so end up on a crows dinner table.

I've been using almond slivers for the chipmunks. Walnuts probably attract them 
better but I have a bag of stale almond slivers and they glue onto the trap 
really well.

My cheap pellet gun has cleared out the local squirrel population around 
the house (like all guns, it does this all by itself with no human 
control), I see some out in the woods but they have not migrated back to 
the vicinity of the house and my wife's squirrel feeders.

Now this sounds promising - "Mouse Trap Powered By Electric Fence Charger "

""You can catch mice with very little expense and no poison. All you need
is an electric fence charger," says inventor Keith Lamb of Gruver, Texas.
According to Lamb, a single 12-volt or 110-volt fence charger can be used
to operate any number of traps over an entire farm and can even be used
inside vehicles such as combines, tractors, pickups, and motorhomes. "On my
farm I have two traps inside my shop, one inside my pickup, and another one
inside my motorhome. All the traps are hooked up to an electric fence that
surrounds my pasture. " What makes the idea work so well, says Lamb, is
that fence chargers operate at high voltage -- 3,000 to 9,000 depending on
the model -- which is more than enough to kill most mice. If the mouse
doesn't die right away it will be stunned and fall into water at the bottom
of his traps and immediately drown. And though they operate at high
voltage, electric fence chargers draw very little amperage. "Fence chargers
barely use up enough electricity to change your meter reading," notes Lamb.
His patent pending traps are made from 2 1/2-gal. chemical jugs cut down to
8 in. high. A 2-in. high hole is cut into each end of the container, about
6 in. off the bottom. A ramp -- made out of cardboard, wood or even rocks
-- leads up to each hole. He then pop rivets a pair of 1-in. wide metal
straps inside the container. One strap runs lengthwise about 3 in. above
the bottom of the container, while the other strap runs across and about 5
in. above it. A ground wire leads from the bottom strap to the fence
charger. The positive wire is attached to a small metal screen enclosure
that contains the bait and hangs about 3 in. below the top strap. Water
fills the container to a depth of 1 or 2 in. The mouse enters the trap on
the cardboard "ramp" and then follows the grounded strap to the bait. As it
reaches for the bait, the mouse contacts the screen, gets electrocuted, and
falls into the water. "It's a simple idea but it works fantastic," says
Lamb. "I've caught as many as 22 mice in a single trap in one night. I've
caught more than 400 mice since I installed my first trap last year. The
container can be any shape or size. I've used 1 gal. anti-freeze jugs and
5-gal. pails. "The mouse usually gets electrocuted before it ever touches
the bait, so the bait always stays fresh. You never have to reset the trap.
The only maintenance is to remove the mice from the water. I think it's a
practical idea even if you don't have livestock and have no need for an
electric fence charger. You can buy a battery-operated charger for cheap.
Or you can install a 110-volt model and use it to operate traps inside your
buildings, then run a wire from the buildings to your vehicles outside."
Lamb runs wires all over his farmstead, elevating it up over the driveway
on poles so it's out of the way. "I put an antiseptic in the water, such as
lysol or household ammonia, to kill any bacteria carried by the mouse, and
to keep the mouse from smelling for several days. During the winter you can
put antifreeze in the water." Lamb has already sold more than 100 traps in
his local area. He's now looking for a manufacturer and is also designing a
trap for rats." -

I read on one site that they live trapped the mice, spray painted them,
then dumped then over a mile away. They caught them again in two weeks.
This got me thinking about strapping little parachutes on them and dropping
them a hundred or so miles away and seeing if they ever make it back. The
live catch traps are out already (they catch more than one at a time) . . .

We live in the country. We park the seldom used cars under a carport.

My wife got in the car last week to go to the store and found she had no
power steering (electrical), the ESC and tire pressure lights were also on.
Turns out rodents have chewed up almost $600 worth of wiring.

Short of parking in a hermetically sealed garage, how does one keep vermin
from eating your car?
