Re: [MBZ] Rich Old Guy is Too Cheap to Fix Car

2021-06-01 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Have to check the VIN to see if the engine is in the affected range.  If
it is, that's a parts car, $500.  Plus, it's a boring color combo, just
the thing for Flahduh though I guess, but it looks like a realtor's car.

I sent the guy a note asking him what the issue was and for the VIN to
check.

You can't believe what a builder friend of mine told me about houses he
was remodeling over there.  Some rich dude buys it, his wife immediately
wants it completely redone to suit her interests.  So they would go in
and take out EVERYTHING down to the studs -- granite kitchens with very
high-end appliances and cabinetry, stone bathrooms, marble, granite, etc
with fancy fixtures, fancy exotic wood flooring, all that stuff.  He
said he took his son 3000ft2 of solid cherry flooring that was like 2yo
in this one house that had been redone then, last time it flipped. He
had his guys salvage it.

He lived over there too but was kind of a basic midwest guy, had been a
Treasury agent doing forensic accounting, then did consulting work on
that after he retired and made some good money, not really into a lot of
fancy stuff, so he was astounded too.  He usually let his crew take
stuff and use it or sell it as a perk, unless he knew someone who
wanted  something (me!  me!).  Crazy.

Some guy posted a generic 60W chinee laser cutter on CL for $1500, which
is not that much less than they can be bought new but I guess that gives
room to dicker a bit.
https://charleston.craigslist.org/tls/5984330399.html Everybody thinks
their chinee crap is gold.

He also says he has a $500 cooler, not clear if that is part of the
bargain or not. He sent me emails, I sent my phone he says he will call
me today but have not heard yet.

It might be worth picking up for maybe $1200 max if the tube works OK,
the machines themselves are fairly decent but the controllers are a bit
wonky, some kind of chinee software runs them, but there are improved
controllers and S/W that can be had for them, and I think they will
accept more powerful tubes, so might be OK for a basic machine to
start. I could probably unload it for similar price at some point, so
will see if I hear from him.

Even at $4500, a guy might be able to get it to pay off if you find

Even at $4500, a guy might be able to get it to pay off if you find

Rear window regulator uses a cable, front uses bastardized design combining
electric motor with hand crank mechanism (or at least that what it looks

Didn't someone develop a field modification to strengthen the door or the
regulator to reduce the flexing (and the resulting metal fatigue) and
prolong the life?

Re: [MBZ] Rich saves my bacon

2015-10-09 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
The rear window regulators on the W140 chassis cars have a design flaw, and
it's more about materials than anything else.

The design itself isn't bad, but the stress placed on the plastic or nylon
pulleys that are used exceeds their strength or as they age they can't handle
the stress. Ultimately, they break and the cable goes slack, allowing the
window to drop.

I've also seen instances where the window won't slide smoothly due to lack of
lubrication in the guides, which puts stress on the cable and causes it to
"jump" off the pulley(s).

So in my opinion, they didn't design it poorly, they just didn't spec the
materials out so they would hold up over time.

Gwagen w463 are famous for this same failure. You can buy sliding door
nylon pulleys with steel ball bearings for about $4 at the hardware store
which are a direct swap into the assembly with rivets. Beats 600 for a new
regulator each time.

My W140 has that arrangement. As the window finished closing, the upper pulley
broke in half with a loud bang that made me fear the glass had broken.
Fortunately the window stayed fully closed.

Three people aboard a Cessna 172 were killed after the aircraft hit a
pickup truck on the runway of Knox County Regional Airport near Rockland,
 Maine,
late Friday. Airport Manager Jeffrey Northgraves told Bangor Daily News

the 172 was taking off just before 5 p.m. when it hit the front of the
truck, which was crossing the runway. The aircraft crashed in bush about
 300
yards beyond the runway and caught fire. Bystanders reached the crash
 site and
tried to pull occupants from the aircraft but the fire was too intense.
 The
aircraft was consumed and the registration marks destroyed, complicating
identification of the occupants. It was not a local aircraft, Northgraves
 said.

The driver of the pickup was not injured. He has not been identified,
 but
Northgraves said he is a pilot and was authorized to drive on the airport.
The vehicle is not owned by the county and the driver is not a county
employee. Northgraves said vehicles operated on airport property have to
 be
equipped with a radio monitoring the local frequency but he said it's not
 known
whether there was any radio communication between the aircraft and truck
 before
the accident. The runway was cleared to allow a scheduled airline flight
 to
land about two-and-a-half hours after the crash and an FAA investigator
 arrived shortly after.

My father wasn't a pimp, it was just the 70's.

That ebay listing brings back memories. I once owned a 1978 Dodge Charger SE,
black, with red stripes and T-tops and a 360 engine. The Charger SE was just a
Cordoba with low seats.

I wanted a beige Cordoba, very snazzy.

Here you go, Rich!

And another one!

AND here's something to wear while driving

There is an awful picture of my father and me (I was only 4-5 at the time) and
my father and I have on matching red/white leisure suits. He had an afro and
is smoking a pipe. He didn't have a Cordoba, instead he had a 1977 Oldsmobile
Cutlass Supreme. We also had black naugahyde furniture and red shag carpeting.
My father wasn't a pimp, it was just the 70's.

It has it. It's probably just broken, but I'm sure
it's fixable, as opposed to a Euro car that was made
without it or something. (Well, it has the thermostat
knob, anyway.)
