[MBZ] Trim adhesive

2006-11-27 Thread Jerry Herrman

Several of the wood trim pieces on my 82 240D have come loose.

1. What is the proper adhesive to use to replace these pieces?

2. What might I have around the house that would be "good enough"?

3. Is it real wood?

4. If I get lazy and don't re-apply these pieces, is there a market for
them?

thanks in advance,

Contact cement like one would use to apply Formica to a counter top.

The zebrano trim on my '83 300SD seems to be warped in spots and has
partially come unglued. Will this work to keep the warped parts in place if
I press hard enough to set up the glue?

Jerry - the wood trim on M-Bs is typically real wood veneer, glued to a thin
piece of aluminum, which is glued to a plywood underlayment. It is pretty
difficult to glue this sandwich back together without taking the trim piece
out of the car, so that you can properly prepare the surfaces and clamp the
layers together.
One guy who does this very well, and it's his livelihood, is Drew Tibcken of
Heritage Woodwork in North Carolina. He has described the process at the
last Startech (05), and the pieces he has done look better than new.

I've tried weatherstrip adhesive, and Shoe Goo. Not very good
results over time with either.

3. Is it real wood?

Yes.

Only if they're not cracked, and if you also remove the aluminum backing
from the dash and send it along too.
