Probably the display module in the instrument panel (a single unit with the LCD). They seem to go bad if you look at them funny. While you have the panel out you can lubricate the speedometer cable (stops it jittering at low speeds), change all the bulbs and the Red Fuse, and repaint the sun-faded needles if you're really anal. It's also easier to get the left and center dash vents out at that time to clean them and change the bulbs, too. Blow it and you lose most of your gauges and maybe the idiot lights too---I can't remember. It's behind the instrument panel, in a socket like the bulbs, and looks totally unlike any fuse I've ever seen---it's a small red plastic rectangle, about a centimeter long, with a copper trace on it. [MBZ] outside temp gauge on W124
Hey everyone, Small problem, Not a big deal, but got my attention. Seem the outside temp gauge, the digital on, is stuck on -38C. Not sure if they go and default to this, but we've had some real warm days here, so the gauge is about 100C out. hee hee. Anything I can pull apart and check? Re: [MBZ] outside temp gauge on W124
The thermistor that drives the gauge is behind the front bumper. If the leads are corroded and have high resistance, it will read incorrectly one way, shorted or grounded on the feed side it will read the other (I think very low temp would be an open circuit). My new 300D reads +130 C all the time, I suspect it's shorted.
