My uncle bought one of those fills, I think Ferrel or Suburban charged

Evidentially

deals.  The buy it now as listed at $4500 originally but dropped
it to
$4k. They said this particular seller usually stuck pretty close to
their buy it now and they would take $3500. I told them I would

This is probably a better deal that what that 09 was.  This one
does not
have a broken out rear window and interior looks nicer.  This one
also
has 50k less miles and is listed as run drive.  Does not require DEF
like the 09.  Of course run and drive is a loose term with copart
so no
telling what I am getting into.  I am not done buying cars for a
while,
time to sell a few more.  Of course in reality this one was purchased
using the proceeds from cars I sold that I had $1800 in, so I guess I
essentially got this one for $1800.

Aside from the barely-used MB Sprinter, there seems to be a lot of nearly-new

This might be a bigger turd.

https://nashville.craigslist.org/cto/d/nashville-1995-mercedes-e320-wagon-firm/7436994828.html

Deer damage, water leaks, generally looks a mess. Running and $1,500 asking
price though, might be good for parts for someone.

It’s very simple and pretty bulletproof. Rarely causes issues of any sort, and
if it does it’s fairly easy to troubleshoot/sort.

Re: [MBZ] Magnetic engine heaters

2022-01-23 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
The advantage of the Goldenrod filter [or one like it] is the ability to
visually see the water collected in the bowl under the filter, and the
drain cock at the bottom which lets you drain out the collected water.
With a canister type filter you do not have those options and have to
"guess there is water in the canister filter because the engine won't start
[after you've drained the battery trying to crank it, in the freezing cold.
Also, with the drain cock built in, you can drain off the collected water
easily without pulling the whole filter and replacing it. [less costly]

I thought the Mercedes spin-on diesel fuel filters had a water trap, and rather
than draining it, you get rid of the water by changing the filter at the
recommended interval. I guess that assumes some maximum amount of water in the
fuel however.

Just make inspecting the water trap, and draining the bowl part of every
shutdown so you have clean fuel to start.

Re: [MBZ] Where is the engine ground on a 642?

2022-01-23 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Just ran a jumper cable directly from negative of battery to where the ground
strap mounts on alternator bolt. No difference although now it’s turning over
semi normal since temp has warmed up a bit and I have already cranked it a few
times. I did remove the connection under the hood where the line from battery
connects with line going to starter and reassembled. It did not seem dirty but
maybe that broke loose a small bit of corrosion. I think I’m going to call it a
day and try the jumper cable deal after its sat overnight. I think if I remove
the air box on that side I can get to the top of the motor mount, remove its
heat shield and maybe I can get at the starter connections from the top. This
is all the room there with everything in place.

That sure sounds like wiring to me, not the starter. If it isn't getting
enough electrons, it won't turn it. "*battery still tests bad at the

2022-01-23 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
To test your possible issue with ground, why not just clamp a jumper cable
to the mount bolt for the starter, or the engine block where you can reach,
hook the other end of the jumper cable to the negative post on the battery,
then crank it.
If it spins hard, like it should, then you know you have a bad ground
connection, for sure, and you can be productive finding where the fault is.
Clean, Bright, and Tight on every connection just tight doesn't cut
it you can have a tight connection with corrosion... thus no
connection, or poor connection.

Last point is going to be in the starter itself. I see no way to get at the

If I do that, I might as well replace the motor mounts. If I have to pull the

Re: [MBZ] car is bored over .30 with comp cams lifters. 2001 Mercedes-Benz S-Class S 55 Sedan 4D, $1, 234

2022-01-23 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
You can bore them, but you have to know what you are doing and how to etch the
aluminum away from the silicon “liner” material so you get proper oiling of the
cylinder walls. My buddy Hans had one done a while back (20 years or so) when
someone overheated a 560 badly and scored the cylinder walls.

And I agree, sounds fishy to me. Unless those were AMG cams, I’m not aware of
“competition cams” being available for Benz engines, they don’t use factory
engines for racing to the best of my knowledge!

It would probably need a whole new exhaust because likely the fool hacked it up
or discarded it. Would also need to find a hood then have to get it painted to
match. Would also require paint work of adjacent panels to feather it, but that
could lead to the whole car needing to be painted.

Re: [MBZ] *sigh* Advance...

2022-01-22 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
That’s too bad. I’ve got two Advance Autos within like five minutes of my
house. The one I frequent (if you call every 2-3 months frequent) used to have
a really good manager that I struck up a friendship with, but he left for a
better job. It’s still pretty good depending on who is behind the counter.
There are a couple of guys who have been there a while that are good, but the
rest of the help wastes good air we could be breathing.

I do like the fact that they have a 500 gallon waste oil tank, so no matter
when I go there I can always drop off my waste oil. The other store nearby must
have a 55 gallon drum or something, as the few times I’ve been by there they
always have a sign on the door about the oil tank being full.

There’s an Autozone even closer than the Advanced Autos, but I don’t
particularly care for them as they rarely have spiffs for online orders like AZ
has.

Re: [MBZ] Is your name Gigi? Do you bake cupcakes? We have the van for you!

2022-01-22 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Current bid on the van is $17,025. Given what they cost new, that seems like a
bargain for a van with only 60k miles, even with the paint scheme (maybe it's
just a wrap that can be removed, though?)

That van might go for reasonable money. My neighbor just opened up a kitchen
close by where my buddy is baking stuff for the farmstand out front of the vast

True, but those are in the water jacket. Curt is talking about one of the
magnetic ones that you stick onto a metal surface and conducts heat. If you get

Re: [MBZ] Magnetic engine heaters

2022-01-22 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The engine in the ASV is a Deere 4045T which got put in all kinds of stuff like
loaders. I expect being able to start would be important.
Specifically on our ASV I don't know who chose the 1400W heater, it was in the
thing when I took over. The box is in the cab which is how I know what size it
is...

I would imagine the ASV is expected to start at -50°F with help from
that block heater.

The ASV has a 1400W block heater that I think is excessive but does a very good
job getting the engine up to temp quickly.

I haven't fully investigated all the heaters on the Tucker yet, it appears to
have 2 transmission heaters, it's got a regular automatic transmission although
there is no parking pawl. There must be a block heater too but I haven't found
it yet. I've only spent maybe 10-15 minutes really examining it, most of that
time was looking for where the stupid cord was to plug the thing in.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Battery fun

2022-01-22 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
I recently found a 900VA APC UPS in the thrift stream,
unopened in its original box. The box was dusty,
and looked 'old'. As expected, the battery was NFG.
It's a 24V pack, open-circuit. I clipped an old consumer
battery charger (leak generator) to it. This high-tech
tool uses a diode in series with a 4W night light bulb
to convert line voltage into charging current. The point
is that it starts out with very high voltage into such a
badly-sulfated battery, 80+V by my measure, and was
able to force in a dribble. The lamp filament was barely
glowing at first.

Once the voltage got down to about 25V I switched over
to a 30VDC power supply in series with a Heathkit square
wave generator, which was pumping in a very ringy 100kHz
square wave according to the oscilloscope. After 2 weeks
the square wave is 'flat', though the rings are still there. The
battery has recovered enough that the UPS will now pass
its self-test, though I have yet to actually try a load on it.

Ours is OK, but it doesn't drive right. It has the wrong rear end in it, as
this was
a conversion from an automatic. A shorter ratio would help it a lot. It is
NOWHERE near as satisfying to drive as the W115 200D was.
