Nice to hear it's still working well!

I have discovered another cause of poor cooling after switching to R134a -- a
bad monovalve. Drove my mother's TE to work yesterday to pick up a used TV
antenna (which didn't arrive as it turned out, long story), and found that just
like my second 300D, it blows hot air forever with the AC compressor not
running. It also fails to heat well, same cause I suspect. A monovalve that
doesn't close will add enough heat at idle to make the car too warm -- just as
if there wasn't enough cooling capacity, since there isn't with added heat!

 a PDF?

Of course. Some of us do not (and will not) have any Microsoft
content in their homes, nor anything intended to be compatible
with their steaming POS's.

Can receiver add his own notes and/or modify it as necessary if it's
 a PDF?

Yes, if you have the full Acrobat suite, which is not common
(nor free).

If ya want it as a PDF, remind me how to change it from doc to PDF.
 When I

You'd have to install some extra software, and then print to a PDF
printer. If you want to set that up we'll gladly help you out with it..
Or you can just send it out in whatever format you like, and we'll take
care of putting it in the different formats. Sending it as plain text
in an email is fine with me. That is ultimately the most portable
solution. :)

Re: [MBZ] 124 evapectomy

2008-06-20 Thread Loren Faeth
no, that is easy. you only need to remove the compressor to replace
the 4 orings between the compressor itself and the 90 degree manifold
on top that the hose manifold attaches to. You only nee steps 1, 12
and 13. to change the hoses, but you also have to take loose any
other mounting points on the hoses, the hose ends at the other end.

At 08:00 PM 6/19/2008, you wrote:
Freon manifold - I'm talking about the two big rubber and steel pipes/tubes

one goes forward to the condenser; the other goes rearward and connects to
another pipe/tube that connects to the evaporator between the firewalls.
Compressor end of the pipes/manifold in question on my 87 300D sure looks
like it's attached to that raised attachment on top of the compressor by one
bolt (13 mm, I think, but not certain right now) on a common flange between
the ends of the two pipes that make up the manifold. The bolt I'm talking
about is easily reached from behind the compressor with a socket on a short
extension on a ratchet. 'You sure you need to REMOVE the compressor just to
change the two pipes (with common flange at compressor)?

ok, Now I think I understand your previous question about how long it
takes to change the freon manifold. At the time I could not figure
out what you meant. The manifold on top of the compressor is not
rocket science to change. It is a bit of a PITA because you have to
take the compressor off to get to it.

I just took out the compressor on my 87 300D, cleaned it, took off
the manifold and replaced the o-rings. It takes 6 orings. 4 between
the compr. and minifold and 2 between the manifold and the hoses. The
orings are a pain to find. I ordered a set from Rusty and I only got
two. The orings in the manifold to compressor side were fairly new
and green, and the compressor had an MB part number and a reman
sticker on it, so I ifgured it was pretty recent. since the green
orings still had some life to them I put a little silicone permatex
on them and put it back together.

  1. pull the capscrew holding the manifold hose to the compressor
  2. loosen the belt tensioner
  3. pull the 4 bolts through the pump holding the compressor to the engine
  4. unplug the wiring harness on top
  5. remove the compressor. (I did all this from the topside on the 124
300D)
  6. clean compressor and remove the manifold.
  7. install new orings and replace manifold (4 orings, green ones if
  you want to use 134a)
  8. put the compressor back in place
  9. plug in the wiring harness. Be sure you get it on the right
pins. you can plug it in with 2 pins in and one pin out!
  10. put the bolts back in. Tighten bolts
  11. remove the shock absorber bolt of the tensioner so the belt will
slide on (OM603, for others: YMMV) put the belt on.
  12. check to see the manifold sealing surfaces are clean, install orings
  13. install hose manifold to compressor
  14. put the boltback in the tensioner shock absorber
  15. tension belt and replace bolt and nut.
  16. Start engine and check belt, etc.

The whole job only took me an hour and 45 min from getting out tools
to sitting down to the computer after cleaning up and putting
everything away. Add another hour for going to the DIY carwash and
cleaning as much of the compressor and the underhood area as I could.

  Hope this helps!

I am guessing that a large part of the reason this car ended up in a
series of auctions is that the evaporator leaks. I have found no
other reason why the refrigerant leaks, but i have not used a leak
detector, because I don't have one. After checking out the
compressor orings, I have this sinking feeling.

Just the retainer bolt and the bottom rear compressor mount bolt.
The real fun comes when try to remove the pipe to condensor fitting

During the coupla weeks, I'd work on it coupla hours in morning while a
little cooler and in shade; 3 to 5 hours mid to late afternoon after car was
in shade again. 3 or 4 days during the 2 weeks, I didn't even touch it.
Heat and humidity was worst part of it all, but fan helped that prob
greatly. But for the heat and humidity, I enjoyed it. I guess I couldn't
stand the trauma of knowing that somebody who may not give a damned was
doing that (and who knows what else) to my car and taking my good money for
something that I KNEW I could easily do myself.

How much did I make an hour? I don't know and don't care. The value of
knowing that I could do it and have done it is worth much more than any
money that I may have saved. Oh, and whatever I may have paid somebody to
do the job plus unknowns is still in my bank account. Again, there is
nothing else that I would have done during the time I worked on the car.

1. pull the capscrew holding the manifold hose to the compressor
2. loosen the belt tensioner
3. pull the 4 bolts through the pump holding the compressor to the engine
4. unplug the wiring harness on top
5. remove the compressor. (I did all this from the topside on the 124 300D)
6. clean compressor and remove the manifold.
7. install new orings and replace manifold (4 orings, green ones if
you want to use 134a)
8. put the compressor back in place

11. remove the shock absorber bolt of the tensioner so the belt will
slide on (OM603, for others: YMMV) put the belt on.
12. check to see the manifold sealing surfaces are clean, install orings
13. install hose manifold to compressor
14. put the boltback in the tensioner shock absorber
15. tension belt and replace bolt and nut.

Freon manifold - I'm talking about the two big rubber and steel pipes/tubes
attached to the backside of a raised attachment on top of the compressor -
one goes forward to the condenser; the other goes rearward and connects to
another pipe/tube that connects to the evaporator between the firewalls.

Before you replace the evaporator, I'd replace ALL the o-rings in all
the fittings and on the expansion valve. o-rings soaked in mineral
oil and then exposed to R143a seem to rapidly become rock hard and
leak, often slowly enough there is little or no oil trace, but you
will slowly loose charge AND eat the compressor from the water that
leaks in.

There are quite a few -- one large one on each end of the compressor
hose set, 5 or seven on the condenser and receiver/dryer, and four on
the expansion valve. All the liquid side ones are the same size, I
think, and MUST fit into the fitting easily -- the usual assorment
has quite a few that are too large although they fit the hose well,
and they cut and leak.

Absorbent desiccants cannot be reused. Adsorbent ones can. Most use
XH-5, XH-7 or XH-9, all of which can be at least partially restored by
pulling a vacuum on the system. They are made from sodium and/or
potassium aluminosilicate which physically traps water molecules
rather than chemically combining with them.

All 3. XH-7 and XH-9 are used by most R134a systems. XH-5 is used for
R12. It's relatively cheap stuff. Also safer than having exothermic

under the right conditions - when under pressure in the presence of
oxygen.

Good thing the new evaporator has a new expansion valve on it, eh?

Actually, they aren't THAT bad so long as you are very careful to get
the allen wrench properly seated in the two screws that hold the
valve to the evaporator.

I'll be challanging myself with this over the weekend or early next
week, as I plan to attempt a flush of my evaporator and want to
change the o-rings in any case -- new compressor and receiver/dryer
with a filter in the hose set -- don't see much point in NOT changing
all the o-rings at the same time!

With any luck, I'll have a working ACC in a few days.

If you changed the evap, changing the receiver/drier is
easy. Changing the expansion valve is tricky unless you have a 10 yr
 old mechanic with small hands.

On my scale, I'd rather rebuild an engine than do an evapectomy.

Depending on the rate of leakage, you may not see much beside a bit

Well, now this is fun. My copy has two page 4 and no page 5 (I'll
try with Acrobat in a minute in case Preview is screwy instead) and I
don't have the diagram. What you want to do is disconnect the left
side, were the servo is, from the right side which is only a pivot.
The link has a flexible bit in it that is a weak spot, and will break
if over-flexed or pulled.

I think you are correct -- if it's a pin that holds the rod going
across the bottom of the box to the passenger side flap, that's it.

Very annoying, the one bit I need isn't here. And I did that box
about four years ago and have no solid recollection of anything but
breaking the stupid link and having to do a barnyard repair.

I believe they tell you to pull it after loosening the side boxes, do
it first, and re-connect after you have the side boxes in place going
back in.

It's at bottom of page 4 in my copy of 83-554. It says disconnect at the
joint on the right and has a drawing of the vulnerable universal-type
joint (thin short sections of plastic turned 90 degrees to each other) -
easy to break at bending points. 'Just looked inside vent on left side and
saw simple pivot point at end of rod (connection to flap); 'reached right in
and pulled the little plastic split-end rivet out of the joint in one smooth
motion - 'dont have to mess with the flimsy one on the right at all. It's
apart - 'very easy and simple joint on the left to disconnect/connect!
'Damned manual had me fiddling with joint on right - 'didn't mess with it
much, though; 'hope I didn't weaken it!

Thanks for making me cautious and to look elsewhere.

Reach into the driver's side (I think, may be on the passenger side)
and pull the little plastic pin that connects the link between the
floor vent flaps BEFORE you do anything else. If you don't, you will
break the plastic hinge in the link, and it's not available
separately. This is a big PITA, and it's not in the manual!

You do need sealant on the firewall, or it will leak air.

Going back in, watch for the motion necessary to get the evaporator
pipes through and the seal located correctly, it's tricky.

When installing the new evaporator, make SURE the screen is properly
installed. You may need to bend the fins on the bottom and top to
get the dimples in the screen to go in as it was orginally
installed. If the screen isn't on right, the box will NOT fit
together correctly, and it will drive you nuts. Mine was glued with
silicon from a bad reassembly job, and this is not necessary.

Keep the clips that hold the parts of the box together in a safe
place -- they don't work after you step on them.

Evaporator tempurature sensor? It unplugs from the main loom remove
from the sensor, which fits into the box itself. The plug fits into
a clip on the side of the box, you have to unclip to remove. The
sensor is in a plastic holder that snaps into the side of the heater
box. It will have to come out to remove the evaporator.

Don't forget the heater core temp sensor (beside the floor flap
servo) and the outside temp sensor (behind glove box).

You have a 6 long putty knife?

Hehe. They can be pretty stiff. Is the steering wheel all the way out? Gives
you some more room if it is.

I gave up and used a screwdriver to pry one out, but that was in the wrecked
car, not willing to get into the driver's seat (I was reaching in the window --
side of the door was UNDER the corner of the cluster) and I wasn't worried
about the dash panel any more.

If you can get it part way out and it will stay there, use the putty knife to
pry downward slightly at the top while pulling on one side, then the other.

It wont' come all the way out, but you will be able to get one side out far
enough to reach in and unscrew the speedo cable and unplug stuff.

Oh, straight out means parallel to the ground, not parallel to the steering
column -- if you pull upwards at all, it hangs on the top. BTDT.

They come out without too much trouble IF you pull on both sides at
the same time -- back and forth won't work, the cluster sticks.
There are four pads, but they are too far back to reach with a putty
 knife.

Hook the cluster just below the corner where the slope starts on
each side, and pull STRAIGHT out, not up or down. Should come free
enough to let you grab the side and pull harder.

Coat hanger wire isn't tough enough, really, you need something
 larger and stiffer.

Bend a right angle a couple mm long, then hammer partially flat so
that it's thinner than the wire by a goodly amount. You can then
slip it between the dash and cluster without denting the dash cover,
turn toward the cluster, and hook firmly. Coat hanger wire will just
straighten out at the force required to get the cluster out, they are
 rather tight.

The MB tools pull it right out.
