Dad came back today and asked if I could raise my offer to $2k. I told him I
was going to have to pass, but to give my best wishes to the graduate and good
luck with the sale.

I’m betting I’ll hear back from them in the near future….

Eh, I totally understand. If I can score it for $1600 it’s worth it despite the
dings. I’ll either clean it up and flip it or just keep it as a backup car.
It’s amazingly clean and should Martha up really, really well.

Either that or someone can find me a manual transmission and all the three
pedal goodies necessary and I’ll swap out the slushbox.

Re: [MBZ] 1983 240D

2019-05-09 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Just to elaborate, Dad appeared to be totally hands-off on this thing, even
from a driving standpoint. He is a VW guy and seemed to be reluctant to even
take a pointed stick to the thing. I’m pretty sure daughter lost all interest
in driving a “classic” car after her first drive in the Civic with modern AC,
stereo and a heck of a lot better performance. At this point in her life I’m
guessing she’s not going to want to deal with the hassle of getting this thing
cleaned up and presentable to get a better price.

It needs some general maintenance like fluids and filters, although there were
records to show it had been maintained properly, the vacuum system sorted, the
central locking sorted, possibly some glow plugs (no glow plug light), the AC
charged up and hit with a can of sealant, and a good Martha’ing to make it
nice. I didn't get completely under it, but the driveline seemed tight when
driving and all the suspension rubber was good that I could see.

I’m sort of ambivalent about the car, which is why I dropped my intended offer
$200. I figure if I can get it for this, fine, if not, move on.

Re: [MBZ] 1983 240D Lower Ball Joint

2019-03-10 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
Last time I did my 126 ball joints I bought TRW ball joints from Hursty (post
Rusty). I can't say if they were good quality.
I also bought one of those "pipe style" tools on eBay to press the new BJ into
the knuckle. The pipe tool costs about $100 (vs $300+ for the MBZ special
tool) and works on 123s and 126s . It was actually not a bad kit:, for example"
The "pipe kit" works fine but you have to totally remove the knuckle from the
car and you need an arbor press.

Seriously, If you have a nearby shop with the right tools (either type) I would
just carry the bare knuckles and BJs to them. I hear it is possible to use a
standard ball joint tool but I think it's also possible to screw it up

Coming out is no problem, but we had to modify a ball joint press to get them
in. A big vise and a large (6 or 8 lb) hammer will drive them out just fine.

Going back in, you will need a press that fits inside the knuckle, and most of
them are too large. We ground down a cheap one, then had to weld plates on the
sides to keep it from bending.

Needless to say, you won't want to grind on a loaner tool

2019-03-09 Thread Mike Esh via Mercedes
Thanks Floyd! I got the drivers side apart and used a little heat from a MAPS
torch and several swings of the hammer and it is out. I will order the
Lemorder ball joints today.

While going through my parts drawer I came across a new engine mount which
prompted me to look at the ones in the car. I noticed the ones in the car
looked clean and new but appear to be flattened out. There is no oil or
anything on either one of them. The new mount that is out of the car sits up at
least 3/4 of an inch higher than the ones installed in the car. And the engine
acts like it needs new mounts as there is what sounds like metal to metal noise
and vibration when the car is lower idle speeds. The noise goes away if I rev
the engine a little.
I’m guessing it is not normal for them to be that depressed after installation
and someone probably put in some cheaper brand when they replaced them. I
think I will go ahead replace those as well. Is Lemforder the correct brand of
engine mounts to go with?

Re: [MBZ] 1983 240D Lower Ball Joint

2019-03-09 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Find a Benz garage with the proper press and pay them the $20 to do it.
You'll be happy you did.  Lemforder BJs, cheaper types can break the
collar even with the proper press, and they might even damage the press.

Any thoughts on a recommended brand for lower ball joints on my 240D? There is

going to try and do the repair myself. I’ve watched all videos on YouTube and
it looks like a pretty straight forward job. I have a torch, a big hammer and a
local garage that will help me if needed.

Everything else on front suspension feels tight and looks like it has been
replaced. It has 210,000 miles on it.

Read the Diesel link and the 722.3 link.   It that does not lead you to

I can tell you that with no vacuum the shifts are near redline and very
harsh.  Too much vacuum leads to early mushy, shifts.

Thanks Greg!  There are lots of good MB part in thingverse.  4 pages of
em, including the CC cable adjuster, it sez for 116, but I'm sure it
fits many other models of that era.

Now I need to look for or design the Little plastic bippy that goes in
the throttle linkage on the 240Ds.  I have access to printers in the
summer at the Fablab.

The 107 visor clips have been ridiculous or unobtanium for years.
Someone started making them in the back yard or garage and selling
online, so they are only $10-15 per pair now.  Still stupid prices for 2
little prastic bits, but far better than unobtainium.

Re: [MBZ] 1983 240D Parts -

2018-12-03 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
OK, here you go:

In October of 1996, I walked into the Parts Department at Precision Motorcars,
now MB of Tampa. I made sure I was speaking with a wholesale parts guy, to
which I said:

“I buy between $2,000 and $5,000 worth of parts annually. I would like to spend
that money here rather than spread it around between sellers on the Internets.
What can you do for me?”

He immediately took my personal information and set up an account with a
wholesale discount (approximately 25% off list) that I receive on all the parts
I buy plus any swag the dealer sells in their little “boutique”. 22 years
later and that parts guy retired earlier this year. His “replacement” is a
woman who has worked the counter there for longer. There are two other parts
people who have been there as long that know who I am as well. They treat me
very well, as I respect their efforts and time and make sure the corporate
brass get a letter every couple of years expounding on the excellent job they
all do for me.

The parts people have given me access to a number I can text my parts lists and
orders to. This is nice, as it eliminates all the phone chatter and increases
accuracy. If I have needs and don’t know numbers, I give them the last 8 of
the VIN and a description and I’ll have a response texted back to me usually
within an hour.

I also make sure all of my parts orders are “stock orders”, meaning that they
come in 2-4 business days after ordering. The dealers get a spiff from
Mercedes for stock orders that saves them money on shipping and applies to
their monthly quota of purchased parts. This is an important metric for the
dealers. When I need something “VOR” (next day) they gladly do this for me at
no extra charge, as they’re way ahead of the game with the stock orders I place.

That’s it.

Oh, yeah - in the next week or two I’ll pop in at lunch time with 2-3 large
pizzas for the people on the parts counter. Inside the lid of each will be a
“thank you” message from me.

Autohaus AZ wants almost $30.00 for a visor clip! Does anyone have a used
one they would like to part with or know where I can get a used one? I am
checking local junk yards. Any color will do.

Also looking for:
Gas/oil filler cap.
Yellow vacuum check valve for door lock system.
Hood Pad - with or without heat shield.
Center driveshaft support with bearing and bearing if not included.
Transmission filter and gasket - Autohaus has two listed, a Meyle and a Mann.
Mann is about $7.00 more and gasket must be ordered separately. Thoughts?
Clear fuel filter(s)
Canister fuel filter(s)

Update on condition - It is running well and going down the road straight and
true. Not stopping as well as it should.
Put new rubber brake lines on all 4 wheels and new pads on the front. The
front pads were soaked with what looked like brake fluid. installed new
caliper on left front. ( it was in the trunk) Did not see any leaks around
other calipers.
Working on vacuum system -
Brakes feel like vacuum assist is intermittent.
Shifting is erratic as well.
Discovered broken line to door locks. Will test drive after that is sorted out.
I’m sure more parts will be need as time goes on.

2018-12-03 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Meyle used to be pretty good stuff.
Now it's just another name you find on generic parts.
Up to you to determine whether Mann is worth $7 more than generic.
Seems like somebody said Mann only on one of the transmission filters, but I
don't remember if that was W123 or W124.

Rock Auto has Motorad fuel and oil filler caps for about $2 each. I assume
they're 'good enough'.
Gates and Stant for a bit more $$$.

If you're ordering from Rock you can get Mann oil filters for $7 or Champion
Labs for $4.40.
And Mann prefilters are $20 for a bag of ten. Seems like Rusty used to charge
me about $1.50 for them 15 years ago. I like to keep a couple of prefilters in
the glove box of every diesel.

I purchased an after-glow kit for our 617.912 when we moved here to Los

It's simple electricity, so far as the plug wiring goes. I'd just
say follow the instructions. What you take out might not match what

Cloth seats were not an option in the US so finding replacements, used

Something like this question could provide a good test of the
functionality of the online EPC. If you sign up for a month's
subscription to the worldwide version you should be able to enter your
VIN, go into parts lookup and let it tell you precisely the part
number and color code for your seat covers. You could take that info
down to your local dealer see if you can find a cooperative parts
man who'll order from Germany, assuming of course that they have the
right stuff still in inventory over there and that the price doesn't
make you blanch.

On a not unrelated note, does anybody by chance have a working link to
that euro parts availibility/pricing page? Used to be

, identified in my Favorites as Classic Ersatzteile, but this old link

Replaced Torsion in bar in the 1983 240D. It wasn't too bad. Hardest part
was getting the nuts off the back of the Brake Master Cylinder. After that
everything went fairly quickly. I also replaced driver side lower control
bushing, that was a real bear.
I ordered a very good used torsion bar with all nuts and bolts and new
rubber from Chuck at All Benz. He was very helpful. $130.00 shipped to my

remove brake master cylinder and the battery and box. 2. Where can
I get this part? New or Used? I will also need all the parts to
re-attach it. Kaleb do have one?

It took me about 2.5 hr to remove one from my 4-cyl parts car. On
another day, I spent about 3-4 hr. doing the bad-out, good-in swap on
a 5-cyl.

And since it is above the springs, no need to messs with spring
compressors.

It looks like it can't possibly get out, but it can.

Oh, and I did one or the other without disconnecting the brake lines.
I just unbolted the booster and skooted it forward.

How much would a new/rebuilt rear end cost? Or might the problem be
 something else entirely?

Nobody buys new or rebuilt diffs for a 240D, the cars don't make
enough power to put any stress on them, so used ones abound.
If both back wheels are locked, it's either brakes or diff. If one rear
wheel turns backwards as one turns forwards, it might be the tranny, like
maybe it's in park and the shift linkage is bad. I've got a nice 240D
diff, I think it's 7x,xxx miles. $50 + $10 to box and ship + actual freight
from MI, or $50 if you want to drive 600 miles round trip and pick it up.

You are passing on it? That manny tranny alone will bring 500

Well, I took a look at the 1983 240D parts car today. To put it simply, it
was TRASHED! The seats were torn as was the shift boot, the console was
trashed, and the like new tires had about 12000 miles on them with some
abnormal wear on the insides. The headlight doors were also cracked/broken,
so I decided that it wasn't worth much to me. The AC stuff was all there.
If anyone else is interested in the car, call Jacob at (503)750-3811.
Perhaps he'll part the thing out. It did have a very straight red body with
a silver driver's side front door. He was asking $200, but it's been there
since Sunday so...?

Re: [MBZ] 1983 240D w/stick and today the brake pedal pressure got really stiff

2006-01-20 Thread Loren Faeth

Yes

The easiest way to determine which is to unscrew the line going to the
brake booster and start the engine and see if you have
vacuum. Alternately, you can separate the tube at the first junction and
plug in a vacuum gauge. If you have vacuum, than the booster or something
else in the line is suspect.
