Re: [MBZ] 1987 6.2 Diesel GMC Suburban ONLY 3 owners $2800

2017-03-24 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes

yeah,

I recently pulled 8000 lb of concrete and a trailer with the gran
caravat. very slow and long spacing. I did it but don't recommend it.

I've also had the quarry dump 4-5 tons on a 1 1/2 ton truck and made the
trip.

I don't recommend either. It is MUCH more pleasant to have a load that
is under the rated capacity.

If I had a pickup, I'd rather have a 1 ton flatbed or multiuse (yuro style)

If I was pulling a 40-50' equip trailer, a real truck is much safer than
a peekup to pull the thing.

Heck I hauled a 2 axle trailer with a 4500# tractor 300 miles with a v8 Dakota!
It was right on the limit of what that truck could safely handle. If the
weather hadn't been perfect I wouldn't have attempted it. Good trailer brakes,
long following distances and low speeds. Still we pulled it off without even a
close call.

I do.  If I never hitched a trailer to it, my 1/2 ton would just
be enough - but it has the towing package and so has heavier
brakes and suspension.

As soon as the trailer is big enough to have more than one axle,
the heavy 3/4 ton is much better suited to the task.

Really?

I don't have a diesel 1/2 ton 2wd to compare, but the 4wd half
ton and the 2wd 3/4 ton that I can compare sure don't have the
same parts underneath. The 3/4 ton has bigger brakes, bigger

___

If you really need the 3/4 ton, then you must work it pretty hard.
I had an 86 Chevy Suburban - 2WD 1/2 ton with the last of the 4bbl
350's and it served me well for the better part of 10 years.
The 700R4 transmission was trouble but most everything else was
reasonably bullet proof. Some rust but I had it repaired and painted and
it was still solid when I sold it.
I got $3300 for it around Christmas time in 2000 with about 200K miles
on it. Engine did not use oil. Interior was still pretty decent. I had
the front seat repadded but the upholstery was original.
Mine was a Silverado so decent trim level and 3 cloth bench seats. Red
with the Cream stripe down the sides and a tan interior. Rear air which
reminds me that the AC was troublesome too. I kept it going but spent a
lot of cash doing so. The lines that fed the rear air were aluminum and
road salt would eat them. After the 2nd replacement, I used rubber
belting to make shields for them under the vehicle and sprayed them with
oil each fall in an effort to prevent damage. Seemed to help as the last
set was still in there when I sold it.

It's a half-ton. That's a pretty heavy mark against it for what I
do.

No pictures of the engine compartment.

The glow plug system on these is not so great. To increase the
appeal to "normal" drives who can't bear the thought of waiting
for a proper glow cycle, these shipped with "fast" glow plugs that
will burn out and swell pretty easily. So there is a controller
that is supposed to keep the glow plugs from burning out.

The best option is to replace the originals with AC60G, which is
the appropriate voltage for the system - but it doesn't heat up as
fast so the controller shuts it off early.

Best option, I think, is a manual button. The controller can be
easily modified to be triggered by a small, low current switch.

All that to say, "new glow plugs" may - or may not - be a feature.

It has the third seat, so will seat 8 adults.

New oil cooler lines is good.

The transmission is almost certainly a 700R4. By '87 those are
pretty good, but rarely last more than 150-200k miles.

Front end rebuild parts are worth at least $400.

Barn doors in the back. That means there isn't an opening window,
and they can bang into cars, trees, walls. But also they operate
a lot longer than a tailgate does after rust invades.

It looks like it has the rear air conditioner unit.

The 3rd seat appears to have the side seat belt buckle supports intact!

Looks pretty good - if a '1/2 ton is suitable.

Could it have the infamous diesel engine that caused Cadillac owners of that
era to form an organization for the purpose of making GM compensate them for
their bad Caddies? Some of the engines held up; some didn't. A friend had one
of the bad Caddies and I think GM finally bought it back.
