2006-01-18 Thread Hendrik Riessen
Not just in MB factories but in general cars are PKW's whereas trucks are
LKW. However in general talk cars are reffered to as auto's. Trucks are
shortened to lastwagen.

Yes - PersonnenKraftWagen...kraft means strength...maybe it means something
else too...? But PKW would include ALL passenger cars, but not trucks or
busses. minivans...don't know.

Re: [MBZ] 300?TD/TE W126...did it ever exist?

2006-01-18 Thread Dave M.
The letters differ depending on if you are referring to them as a
model number suffix (300TE is a gasser wagon), or as a chassis prefix
(S124 is a wagon). Here's the list of chassis prefixes that I know of:

W = sedan (W124, 300E)
S = wagon (S124, 300TE)
C = coupe (C124, 300CE)
A = cabriolet (A124, E320 convertible)
V = limo / long wheelbase (V124, E280 LWB)
R = roadster (R129, SL500)

Some more samples, with photos, from MB USA:
http://www.mbsca.com/modelguide1.htm

To answer the original question, I don't think an S126, or S140, ever
existed - at least not from the factory.

Re: [MBZ] 300?TD/TE W126...did it ever exist?

2006-01-17 Thread Christopher McCann
Yes - PersonnenKraftWagen...kraft means strength...maybe it means something
else too...? But PKW would include ALL passenger cars, but not trucks or
busses. minivans...don't know.

German MB factories cars are referred

And we always thought our German cousins were SO organized! (Maybe that is
just trains)

interesting, I thought W just automatically preceded every chassis number.
   So, to get this straight, my 300SD is a W126, but my 87 300TD is a 124?

   A 126 300TD would have been great. oh well.

   ALSO, I had enough of my oozing (in summer) and crustaceous (in
 winter) rear view mirror and replaced it. You had mentioned you'd never
 seen one (I think), so if you want this one
 for  experimentation/dissection/curio/whatever, just e-mail me a
 mailing  address.

  subject line says it all.

The W stands for sedan/coupe. R for roadster, T for transporter (wagon)
in the old notation system (starting in the early '90s everything went
CRAZY). The is NO such thing as W123/124 wagon! It would be a 123/124 T,
not a W123/124 T. I don't recall Mercedes ever making an S class
wagon, but some of the independent coach makers MIGHT have made a few.
