That's pretty steep for my market based on your description. More like a $2500

it's really clean and has records.

Ok, so the price is not stupid - just on the high side of what you would

I am in Canada and there are a lot fewer of this sort of thing around here.
If we adjust for the difference in the dollar then we also take about

Yeah, but a Chevy dealer and about 90 miles away in a small town with no
one likely to be very knowledgeable about MB so not easy to do.
My guess, for what it is worth, is that the car maybe belonged to the
owner of the dealership or his wife, or father etc.
It just seems odd to me that they have sat on it at the same price for
at least 6 months. That sort of says to me that they have a personal
interest in it or they would have just sent it to the auction long ago.

Agreed. There's got to be some attachment or emotion involved, or they're
blinded by the tristar and have unrealistic ideas of its value.

There's a 3400 mile 1991 500SL on BW right now. The owners, an older couple
who bought the car new, went for a drive and found the car had a head gasket
leak, which was due to a failure of the metal on the block at the edge of one
of the cylinder bores. Only fix is new engine or tear down the existing one
and weld/machine the block. Needless to say it's a big chunk of change for
either.

They're trying to sell it now, quoting the original sticker price, etc.,
without much activity other than people politely telling them they're nuts.

Re: [MBZ] 420 SEL

2014-09-22 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
There is a separate thread in the For sale forum where a couple of people
have addressed that. A decent used low mile engine would be around $2k.

The problem with that is the loss of matching numbers, if that matters. If it
were me and I wanted to maintain the value and integrity, I would have the
original engine torn down and repaired.

I don't see the R129 being a classic for a long, long time. Too many of them
produced and certainly nothing special about the lines or design in my opinion.
 And I own one, too.

The problem with this car, I believe, is the owners are placing too much
emphasis on potential value. There is no clear direction on how it might be
repaired or restored, and no matter how it is done, it will never, ever
possess the value that it held prior to the engine failure.

In my mind the car is worth maybe $10-15k at best. Figure a used engine at $2k
of a complete rebuild at $5k and you still would be hard pressed to recover the
value, if possible.

I think they're screwed if you ask me.

There's a light in the center of the knob, it's to indicate
that the rear fog light is on. The knob pulls off to access
the bulb. The bezel often has its own dash light too, but
that's accessed from behind.

You just did. Nothing taking power from the overvoltage
relay is working right.

Replace its fuse, and at least try re-seating the relay.
That alone may do it.

These older OVP relays are pretty simple inside, the
metal cover slips off and you can see what's inside.
I've seen bad solder joints in those, too. There's
a big 18V Zener diode in there whose job it is to blow
the fuse and un-power the relay, if power goes out of
its tolerable limits. Not much to go wrong, and not much
to fix, either.

Is it the parking brake light (BRAKE) or the lining light
(concentric broken circles)? The former means low fluid or
sticking/misadjusted parking brake mechanism (common on 124s, not sure
about 126s); the latter means worn pads or faulty (intermittently
 grounding) sensors.
