What did you use to do the search? Carfax is pricey.

The used car market is nuts. Used trucks are even worse. Used cars are
appreciating. That is nuts. Turds that shouldn't bring $1k are bringing $2,500
all day. Used Mercedes that need work or maybe Beemers are the exception,
because most mechanics are scared of them, and most owners know repairs are an
expensive proposition.

Probably not for the market. Dan wants a yellow one but I think that would
command a lower price for most people. There's a reason that most cars are
white, black, or silver.

That's better advice I think. Dan likes the 140, has the tools to fix
them, and they are an S-class.

A 123 diesel is just plain loud. Simple, reliable, fun to drive, etc: in
spades. But droning along having to shout over the engine and road noise
is just not too fun.

I would prefer a diesel long wheelbase given a choice. If it’s a gasser (300)
I want a long wheelbase (SEL) despite Kaleb’s abuse. And yes, I know the
300SEL is a dog, and I don’t care. I like the W126 chassis, and if given the
choice of a vergasser, don’t want a V8.

there are still enough 123s in junkyards. Even "overpriced" 123

I have no idea why anyone would want a 300SEL. Talk about a dog. I
have driven several. You have to rev the piss out of it to get it to move.

On 1/16/2016 8:03 PM, Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote:

My situation boils down to this:

Nice car, well cared for, everything works. I have the stuff required to
perform diagnostics on it and make most repairs. It has needed nothing since I
bought it. I’ve put about 10k miles on it, mostly due to the trip from Houston
and a round trip to Mobile. Otherwise it would be more like 7.5k. It
currently has 106k on the clock. It’s nice to drive, handles relatively well
and gets pretty good gas mileage considering the size - I typically average
over 20 mpg a tank in a 50-50 highway/city driving cycle.

I am terrified that something is going to break. I can relate this to the
paranoia over the W140 and how it was so “sophisticated” that it would cost a
fortune to repair and maintain. Of course that’s not the case, as the W140 is
fairly simple to maintain and the systems are nowhere near as complex as the
W220.

The W220 has a CANBUS system where everything, and I mean everything, talks
over it. There are critical choke points, called “SAMs” that act as the
network switches, for lack of a better description. If one of these SAMs
fails, and they do as the cars age, you’re screwed. It’s a unique part that’s
MB only, to the tune of a grand or more. Without it the car is scrap metal.
Then you have the air suspension, which, I’ll admit is nice, but problematic.
When it’s working it’s great, but if one strut/airbag goes out, again, the car
is pretty much flatbed material. A rebuilt aftermarket strut/airbag runs
around $600, and they’re supposed to be replaced in pairs. That’s a $1300 bill
as a DIY job, far more if you’re paying someone to do the work.

It’s stuff like this that makes me long for something simple, as even a W140 is
simple compared to these cars.

And lastly, as I’ve said before, this car has no soul. I can’t pick it out of
the parking lot with all the other Asian and domestic jellybeans. I enjoy
driving my car, even for utilitarian purposes, and one of the reasons I’ve
driven Mercedes besides the obvious is their uniqueness and panaché. You know
a W140 is a Mercedes - there’s nothing else on the road like it. Same for a
W123 or W126, or any other MB model made prior to 2000. While this isn’t a
major deal, it’s a nagging issue in the back of my mind.

I really like the S-class cars, regardless of vintage, so ideally I would like
to go to a W126 or W140. Diesel would be great, but it’s not absolute. My
bucket list car is a (go ahead, Kaleb, thrash me for it) W126 300SEL, which
isn’t the easiest thing to find.

What really hangs this whole thing up is that I have nothing to cover for me if
I sell. I would have to rent a car in the interim or scramble to find a
replacement, which is not the idea way to be looking for a car.

Whatever….

Dan

If I quoted the CL prices around here you would laugh, as there is no way
anyone is getting them. eBay has cars in the $7k-$9k range, but I don’t see
these auctions closing. Around here they’re going in the $7k range, maybe on a
good day. I have toyed with the idea of listing it on eBay with no reserve and
cutting and running if it doesn’t make a decent price.

People are afraid of them because of the air suspension and because the earlier
models were such unbelievable nightmares due to their Chrysler genetics.

This car runs great and the only issue it has is the e-brake release cable
being bad. I haven’t been able to get up the goomph to lay on my back under
the dash for an hour to fix it. Otherwise, everything else works, and I have
added the factory hands free cell phone/Bluetooth integration and Voice Control.

Trade me a nice W126 diesel if you’ve got one, or a W140.

Re: [MBZ] Am I Nutz?

2016-01-16 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes

Whatever….

Dan

I loved the maintenance simplicity/ease of my non-turbo 123 300TD. That
little wagon could haul a lot and it still had many modern features. The
ACC servo even worked most of the time. It sat un-driven for a couple years
before I bought it. For a few years I only drive it around town and worried
a lot about what it would do on the open road. But when I took it on the
interstate it ran great. For a 30-40 year-old design it was an amazing car.

Great color combo, provided the interior isn't oogy.

The $3800 price - probably depends on the maintenance history. If it

I'm selling the car for my brother-inlaw John that lives in Califirnia.
He bought the car new in 1984 and drove it to Florida about 15 years ago
to keep at a Condo they have in Hunters Green. They just sold the Condo,

All that non-factory chrome is pretty tacky. I'll bet it has the no-dust
wheel inserts, so the front rotors are warped. I'd ditch those chrome
wheels in a heartbeat, if not properly done then the alloy base metal can
turn into chalky dust.

Other than that, very low miles for that car, if truly garage kept then
the paint should be fantastic and the interior won't be baked out.

Probably, but you should still buy that car. I'd say $3k but if
exceptional then go a bit more. I have 2, they are easy enough to work
on, not all electronicked up, and ride really nice at 80mph+. Might need
new tars and the various rubber bits if it has not been driven a lot,
you can use that for negotiation.

This is what the seller told me via email:

I'm selling the car for my brother-inlaw John that lives in Califirnia. He
bought the car new in 1984 and drove it to Florida about 15 years ago to keep
at a Condo they have in Hunters Green. They just sold the Condo, and need to
sell the car. It has been garage kept since it was new. John should have all
the records when he had it in California. The car probably has less than 2k
miles in the last 10 years.

I would probably shoot for $2500 if everything was solid and intact. Sitting
for long periods like that is not a good thing and would play into the
negotiations big time.

The seller doesn't appear to have a lot of interest in the car based on what
was said, and the price may be coming from the owner. We'll see.

I hate the flat multi-hole wheels and would much rather have bundts, but you
take the good with the bad. Note that it has California plates. That's not
good, as CA is a total PITA to get registrations and titles from.

I'm going to take a look at it tomorrow after work if I can set something up
with the seller.

I'm thinking this could be a good car for the elder son, as the 300E, bless
it's heart, is getting a bit long in the tooth and is going to need some major
work in the future. I would rather part with it intact than have to patch it
up to sell it.

More as I know it.

Re: [MBZ] Am I Nutz?

2014-07-24 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
That all makes sense. That is a good car, lowish miles, looks in good
shape ext/int but you will have to point out how these old dizzels like
to be driven, sitting like that is not good, rubber deteriorates, tires
are probably at least 10yr old (that's $500 right there for a new set).
You might want to look at the fuel, maybe drain at bit at the clear
filter, oil, etc. Check suspension front and back for any indications
of rubber gone bad, squeaks, clunks, etc. Take a jack to lift up the
front corners, rattle the wheels to check BJs and bearings. Of course
the AC, which is likely still R12 which might or might not be an issue
depending on if you want to use replacements. Those wheels are later
additions? They look like SEL wheels but the chrome? Wonder if he
still has the bundts if it came with them?

If you could get it for $2500 that would be a nice car, last one I
bought I went to $3k as it was in pretty good shape and that was a few
years back, had all the service records since new. If he has had it for
a month and not sold, offer the $2500 see what happens.

Good luck! I love that color.

Exactly.

CA likes to hold cars hostage if the registration isn't current, no matter what
the reason.

When I bought my 1962 300SE out of a CA estate, I ended up using a bogus title
service to get it clear of the nearly $2k in back fees CA wanted before they

The '87 300D I stripped parts from in the Richmond pick-n-pull still had
the trap oxidizer, #14 head, ~350,000 miles on the odometer.

I found no obvious reason for it to be junked, I would guess that the
transmission gave up. One of the lines for the turbo boost signal to the
ALDA was broken, so it probably was underpowered. Maybe the head was
cracked and it was drinking coolant. It had some fancy aftermarket radio /
alarm.

In Missouri, they only care about delay of title transfer. Once
the title is transferred, they don't care how long it is before it
is licensed.

But the original comment sounds like CA doesn't want to allow a
title to transfer out of the state unless all the missing years of
registration is paid. Yikes!

DMV counter asked why I had not registered it after I bought it,
I told him I needed some time to fix it so it was sitting in my
garage for a while, he was able to waive the back-registration on
 the spot, easy-peasy.

In Missouri, they only care about delay of title transfer. Once
the title is transferred, they don't care how long it is before it
 is licensed.

But the original comment sounds like CA doesn't want to allow a
title to transfer out of the state unless all the missing years of
 registration is paid. Yikes!

It's not just taxes in CA. They want registration feed for every year, EVEN if
the car was off the road.

CA likes to hold cars hostage if the registration isn't current, no matter
 what the reason.

When I bought my 1962 300SE out of a CA estate, I ended up using a bogus
title service to get it clear of the nearly $2k in back fees CA wanted
before they would release the title.

That's not good, as CA is a total PITA to get registrations and titles

I hope it has current CA plates, or somebody might have to pay the back
registration fees before the title will be released.

OTOH, my nephew-in-law drove around on expired CA plates for many years in

Florida has a one time fee that applies to any and all vehicles being titled
and registered in the state. I believe it's something like $220 per vehicle or
thereabouts.

What they don't tell you is that of you have ever registered a vehicle in the
state in the past and not surrendered the plate, it sits in limbo in the system
and never goes away.

I never surrendered the plate on my 1984 300SD.

When I moved back in 2010 that old plate saved me $660 thanks to a sharp DMV
employee.
