FWIW, there's a 92 300TE and a 94 E320 wagon for sale that I noticed in the
classifieds last night. Think each was for $4900. It isn't biodiesel, so nobody
around here seems interested. Both seemed like very well kept examples.

Yesterday I drove past a for-sale 124 wagon, and stopped for a quick
peek. A '90 300 TE, they're asking $5500.

I have an 88. I can't advise about anything newer, because it is the
newest in the fleet. Its my experimental gasser winter car that has turned
into a year-round car. It is a great running car and rivals my SDL in the
$ per mile category. I am guessing it gets 22-24 mpg on the road. I've
never measured it. I'd part with it for a price New rear $hock$,
rebuilt tandem pump, new battery, new coil, new tires.

SDL gets maybe a little better mileage, but we are getting ripped for
Dissel fool prices, so $ per mile is not great with the SDL, but, it IS an
SDL! The 300TE 124 gets better mileage than the 123 230TE we had.

The only thing that's really different from a sedan W124 is the
tailgate and rear windows. Those have a tendency to leak. Gas tank is
in the right rear fender instead of behind the seat, and it will have a
SLS rear end -- make sure it had normal ride height and suspension
travel. Extremely rough ride is flat accumulators in the SLS, not a
big job but $200 in parts and some labor. Left for extended periods,
the struts become damaged and they are $600 or so EACH.

Nice cars, I wouldn't swap mine off willingly!

Later is better, the early models had issues with the hydraulic
lifters in the m103, they would wear causing ticking.
Part's guy told me they reved the lifters about 8 times over the
production life to make them harder.
Early valve seals wore out quickly, consuming lots of oil, but easier
to replace.

Check the rear doors, again earlier models had door handles attached
via two bolts and some plastic tabs
overzealous pre-teens would yank on door and break tabs off, then
handle would work loose, fixing require new door handle/armrest.

With my 88 300TE over say 200K miles we averaged 18-19 mpg, never
really saw anything over 20ish. But perhaps
fuel mixture was always too rich.

Lastly I'd suggest of course you find a 3.2 liter TE for more
horsepower and torque.

I picked up a 1991 300TE 4Matic this past summer and I'm loving it a
lot. I named it Beulah after the gym teacher in Porky's because it's
got a sturdy frame. I got it for almost half of the going price and
it's in pretty good condition. The mileage is pitiful around town (16
mpg) but goes up to a more respectable 22 mpg on the highway. Mind
you, the all-wheel drive pulls the mileage down and I'd expect a
regular TE to do a couple mpg better.

I had a1990 that I sold over the summer. It had 138K on it, and was a good
second car for my wife and 4 kids. We didn't use it over the past winter
though, and it developed a bunch of little problems from sitting when we
started using it in the spring. I'm pretty sure none of them would have
happened if it didn't sit idle for so long. Gas mileage wasn't bad on it,
usually around 20.
