Yeah, I saw “Ron’s” tweet with the FSP MRAP going across the bridge with it’s
American flag flying off the back earlier today.

Glad they’re getting things sorted, they were talking about barging all of that
stuff over last week. What an ordeal that would have been.

Sanibel Causeway reconstruction.
The dirt part is easy.
The elevated bridge part will take some effort.
Governor IIRC says we will be able to drive to Sanibel this month. That
will be amazing if it happens by Halloween.

That happened a few years ago here during Dorian. We were forecasted to get
10-12ft surge (which would have put charleston under about that much water) but
the storm veered offshore. I rode my bike to the beach and the water was way
out, even at a high tide, lower than low tide. It was really weird. I think the
storm was 20-30mi directly offshore at that point and it was sunny a bit to
north. It was really weird.

Most of those folks aren’t there. They’re seasonal residents who come down in
the winter.

Granted, a few might have property managers that would take care of this, but
I’m betting a lot don’t. The property managers I worked with down there and on
Longboat Key, a similar enclave off the coast of Sarasota, wouldn’t have
anything to do with car maintenance or upkeep. I know because I asked some of
them…

Overall, I am impressed at the improvement in hurricane forecast accuracy
over the past decade, particularly in the ability to forecast development
of a major hurricane long before there was anything obvious in the works.

I just looked at the Poos weather station and unless it has been blown away is
showing a balmy spring day. But seems not quite to be the case

...IAN CAUSING CATASTROPHIC STORM SURGE, WINDS, AND FLOODING IN THE FLORIDA
PENINSULA...

At 200 PM EDT (1800 UTC), the eye of Hurricane Ian was located by an Air Force
Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft and Tampa radar data about 50 miles
south-southwest of Punta Gorda, Florida. Ian is moving toward the
north-northeast near 9 mph (15 km/h). This general motion with a reduction in
forward speed is forecast today, followed by a turn toward the northeast on
Thursday. On the forecast track, the center of Ian is expected to move onshore
soon, move over central Florida tonight and Thursday morning and emerge over
the western Atlantic by late Thursday. Ian is forecast to turn northward on
Friday and approach the northeastern Florida coast in addition to the Georgia
and South Carolina coasts late Friday.

Maximum sustained winds remain near 155 mph (250 km/h) with higher gusts. Ian
is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Ian is
forecast to make landfall on the west
coast of Florida as a catastrophic hurricane soon. Weakening is expected
after landfall, but Ian could be near hurricane strength when it moves over the
Florida East coast tomorrow, and when it approaches the northeastern Florida,
Georgia and South Carolina coasts late Friday.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles (75 km) from the center and
tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles (280 km). A River,
Estuary, and Coastal Network station at Redfish Pass, Florida, recently
reported sustained winds of 94 mph (151 km/h) and a wind gust of 126 mph (203
km/h).

The minimum central pressure is 937 mb (27.67 inches) based on Air Force
Reserve dropsonde data.

Visit the National Hurricane Center website at hurricanes.gov for additional
forecast information on Ian.

The next complete advisory will be at 5:00 PM EDT.

Why? Got family/friends there?

Many of the residents are seasonal and filthy rich.

Re: [MBZ] Bullseye

2022-09-28 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
I got both of mine from Amazon, a Chinese vendor, I suspect:

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B09W89SLMG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8=1

I chose this one mainly due to the size of the display. It hasn’t been
available for several months, and now I see that it’s out of stock. I’ve been
quite pleased with both. The one at the FL house had a failed solar panel after
about two months of use which affected the solar radiation reporting, and when
I contacted the vendor they immediately replaced the unit. They were very
responsive and made the process easy.

There were some reviews about difficulty setting it up with online services,
but I attribute that to operator error. I didn’t have any problem.

If you go sub-$200 there are lots to choose from. I’m not hard core about
accuracy or add-on stuff, I just wanted basic information. This one served the
purpose for me. If there was a gripe it would be that it only shows rainfall
rate, but in the online data cumulative rainfall is shown, so the information
is there.

referred to by the nickname Shep,[1] was an American storyteller,
humorist, radio and TV personality, writer, and actor. With a career that

which he narrated and co-scripted, based on his own semiautobiographical

Both. My Dad was an executive vice president for the commercial lending
division of General Motors until the summer of 1969. “Yellow Motors Credit” as
it was known then. And later an executive VP of commercial lending at
Merchant’s Bank in Indianapolis.

Sanibel was a bit of a hole back then, sort of shabby. The locals didn’t want
anyone on the island, and they kept people off by charging (at the time)
exorbitant tolls to cross the bridge from Ft. Myers. Sort of like what Key West
was at the time, too. Locals who didn’t want the touristas around, somewhat
shabby, nothing of any real interest or attractiveness that would draw them,
either. About the only thing Sanibel was known for at the time was being a
great place for shelling.

Gene Shepard lived there. We used to run into him at the general store on
Captiva, but I didn’t know the guy from Adam at the time. My folks told me who
it was some years later, but I remember the guy. It wasn’t until I was a
teenager that I read any of his books, and this predated the Christmas Story
movie by decades.

It was a very low key sort of place at the time.

 2. The threat of significant wind and a large storm surge into Tampa has

 3. Hurricane threat and storm surge threat has increased considerably for
 Ft. Myers.
 Our Forecast
A reconnaissance plane investigating Ian is finding that the hurricane is
quickly regaining its strength now that the center is back over water.
Some additional strengthening is likely over the next 24 hours prior to
the center moving ashore tomorrow afternoon.
Ian has been tracking east of this morning's forecast. On its current
heading, the center will move inland west of Port Charlotte in about 24
hours. The farther south landfall means that little weakening is expected
prior to landfall. We have shifted the landfall point southward to Port
Charlotte in this advisory. The farther south landfall means that Ian's
center will likely emerge into the Atlantic near Daytona Beach early
Friday morning. It may have time to intensify some prior to moving inland
on the middle Georgia coast Friday afternoon. We do not think that Ian
will regain hurricane strength during that short period in the Atlantic,
but that cannot be ruled out. Once inland into Georgia and South Carolina,
Ian should quickly weaken to a remnant low by Saturday.
Ian's slow movement near landfall on Thursday will result in prolonged
strong wind and very heavy rainfall for the Florida Peninsula. By the time
Ian moves northward into Georgia, however, it should have ingested plenty
of dry air, resulting in significantly lower rainfall amounts over Georgia
and the Carolinas on Friday and Saturday.

Having spent a fair amount of time at my parent’s former house on Sanibel, if
Ian goes over Sanibel and Captiva there won’t be much left when it’s gone. My
folks owned a place on Sanibel from the late 1960s until the early 80s. They
bailed because it was getting too commercialized - in other words, they were
letting too many people over the bridge. Lots of great memories from there. We
would fly down on the weekends in the winter, we probably spent about half of
the weekends in the wintertime down there. From Indy to Talladega for a bio
break then across the Gulf to Sanibel. There was a grass airstrip in the middle
of the island, and we would just taxi down the road and park the Beechcraft in
front of the house.

I think the house was about 10-12 feet above sea level, so it would be
inundated by this I suspect.

Maybe.

Ian is going to sit out in the Gulf right along the coast and “churn” for at
least 24 hours with CAT3 (or higher) winds. While storm surges might not be as
bad, damage from high winds will be much worse. We’ll have much higher rainfall

I like that!

Yeah, there’s only so much you can do. If my sister in law was home we would
button the place up, pack up things and head over there (she lives on the east
coast over by West Palm) since they won’t get any of the storm. Then it’s just
a matter of getting back after the storm to assess the damage.

The models are rarely “exactly” right, and a shift of a few degrees of the path
in one direction or another can make a substantial difference in how bad things
get, so I’m not ready to freak out just yet. As a long time local weather
forecaster that has a list of rules says about safety during a hurricane, the
last rule being “Rule #7 - Don’t freak out unless I’m freaking out.” It’s so
well known around here that a local brewery has a “Rule #7” beer.

The models are now showing a slight shift to the south of us, and that’s god
news for us, sort of. If we end up on the north side of the eye we’ll get more
wind, but it will be of lower velocity since the eye may be farther away.
Again, this stuff is all pure speculation until a few hours before landfall.

I went out yesterday morning to top off the fuel in both cars and to get some
additional bottled water. It was quite busy, but not too crazy. For grins I
filled up a spare propane cylinder, and business at the hardware store was
quite brisk, they were on their second refill of their 2000 gallon tank that
day.

The locals, that is, those of us who have been here for a while, are already
prepared. The “new” people here are the ones freaking out and getting all
crazy, mainly because they either haven’t prepared in advance and/or are
whipped into a frenzy by the media, or both.

Depending on how close the eye wall gets to us, we could see sustained winds
well above 100-120 mph for a period of time. The farther we are from the eye
the better.

I’ll be putting up storm panels on the windows this morning, then I’m pretty
much done. At this point we’ve got a couple weeks of power, food and water, so
we’re good as long as the structure survives. I’ve got to get the chainsaw out
and check it, and I’ve got a number of tarps in the event there is any roof
damage. If we can keep the envelope of the house intact it’s all good.

Our utilities are underground and fed off loop feeders, so there will have to
be some pretty severe damage to the infrastructure to take us completely
offline.

Gotta get some breakfast and get to work before the fun begins..

Re: [MBZ] Bullseye

2022-09-26 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
My view on the matter is to stay through the event having a safe place to ride
it out if it gets *really* bad (and the CAT 1s here have been scary enough)
then once it passes take care of any compromising house damage if that is
possible. And then to bug out if necessary.

I have 30gal of gas for my generator to keep the fridge going and a few lights
for a few days running it a coupla hours at a time, the fridge will stay
cold/frozen for a good 6hr. The trouble here is that the power company will
shut off power to keep energized lines and boxes and equipment from frying due
to salt water intrusion. It will rinse out easy enough but shorted equipment is
hard and expensive to replace. And in the aftermath it might take several days
for crews to even get down to the end of the road.

I have lots of canned and dry food to last for some time, plenty of ammo,
2-90gal hot water tanks that stay hot for 4-5 days, and the poodles to keep me
company and provide backup perimeter defense. Vehicles are also full of petrol,
the ML500 would be the post-event ride. Plenty of diesel for my little tractor,
and mixed for the chainsaw to deal with trees. And a bike!

We’ll get some rain and wind but it shouldn’t be too bad here post-landfall. I
am concerned for the Poos situation though. Stay in touch and provide updates
as you can. Ts headed your way.

Tomorrow evening is when the winds are supposed to start up.

I wouldn’t say a moment’s notice, but in a relatively short period of time. You
must understand that you can’t go out in this sort of stuff. If you don’t bail
before it gets here, you’re pretty much stuck for the duration.

Figure CAT3 (140 mph winds) or higher and churning in the Gulf for a day
offshore. We will get beat to heck, not to mention the massive storm surge
now estimated at 10’ or more that will hammer the bay at least twice
during high tides. The better part of south Tampa will be under water as
 will most of downtown.

I’m hoping for near or total obliteration. Then I can relocate to AZ for
 good.

So I take it you are there but ready to head out at a moments notice? When is
it supposed to arrive?

No need with Mother Nature throwing 140 mph winds at it for a day. The roof is
rated to 120 mph, so that’s a good enough margin it should lift or tear it off
easily.

I’ve got everything inventoried and the important stuff packed and ready to go.
I’ll be well prepared to complete the insurance claim.
