Most of those folks aren’t there. They’re seasonal residents who come down in 
the winter.

Granted, a few might have property managers that would take care of this, but 
I’m betting a lot don’t. The property managers I worked with down there and on 
Longboat Key, a similar enclave off the coast of Sarasota, wouldn’t have 
anything to do with car maintenance or upkeep. I know because I asked some of 
them…

I just looked at the Poos weather station and unless it has been blown away is 
showing a balmy spring day. But seems not quite to be the case

...IAN CAUSING CATASTROPHIC STORM SURGE, WINDS, AND FLOODING IN THE FLORIDA 
PENINSULA...

At 200 PM EDT (1800 UTC), the eye of Hurricane Ian was located by an  Air Force 
Reserve Hurricane Hunter aircraft and Tampa radar data about 50 miles 
south-southwest of Punta Gorda, Florida. Ian is moving toward the 
north-northeast near 9 mph (15 km/h). This general motion with a reduction in 
forward speed is forecast today, followed by a turn toward the northeast on 
Thursday. On the forecast track, the center of Ian is expected to move onshore 
soon, move over central Florida tonight and Thursday morning and emerge over 
the western Atlantic by late Thursday.  Ian is forecast to turn northward on 
Friday and approach the northeastern Florida coast in addition to the Georgia 
and South Carolina coasts late Friday.

Maximum sustained winds remain near 155 mph (250 km/h) with higher gusts.  Ian 
is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.  Ian is 
forecast to make landfall on the west
coast of Florida as a catastrophic hurricane soon.  Weakening is  expected 
after landfall, but Ian could be near hurricane strength when it moves over the 
Florida East coast tomorrow, and when it approaches the northeastern Florida, 
Georgia and South Carolina coasts late Friday.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles (75 km) from the center and 
tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles (280 km).  A River, 
Estuary, and Coastal Network station at  Redfish Pass, Florida, recently 
reported sustained winds of 94 mph  (151 km/h) and a wind gust of 126 mph (203 
km/h).

The minimum central pressure is 937 mb (27.67 inches) based on Air Force 
Reserve dropsonde data.

Visit the National Hurricane Center website at hurricanes.gov for additional 
forecast information on Ian.

The next complete advisory will be at 5:00 PM EDT.

I chose this one mainly due to the size of the display. It hasn’t been
available for several months, and now I see that it’s out of stock. I’ve been
quite pleased with both. The one at the FL house had a failed solar panel after

I contacted the vendor they immediately replaced the unit. They were very
responsive and made the process easy.

There were some reviews about difficulty setting it up with online services,
but I attribute that to operator error. I didn’t have any problem.

If you go sub-$200 there are lots to choose from. I’m not hard core about
accuracy or add-on stuff, I just wanted basic information. This one served the
purpose for me. If there was a gripe it would be that it only shows rainfall
rate, but in the online data cumulative rainfall is shown, so the information
is there.

shabby, nothing of any real interest or attractiveness that would draw them, 
either. About the only thing Sanibel was known for at the time was being a 
great place for shelling.

Gene Shepard lived there. We used to run into him at the general store on 
Captiva, but I didn’t know the guy from Adam at the time. My folks told me who 
it was some years later, but I remember the guy. It wasn’t until I was a 
teenager that I read any of his books, and this predated the Christmas Story

 1. Landfall has been shifted southward to near Port Charlotte tomorrow 
 afternoon.
 2. The threat of significant wind and a large storm surge into Tampa has 
 diminished.
 3. Hurricane threat and storm surge threat has increased considerably for 
 Ft. Myers.
 Our Forecast
 A reconnaissance plane investigating Ian is finding that the hurricane is 
 quickly regaining its strength now that the center is back over water. 
 Some additional strengthening is likely over the next 24 hours prior to 
 the center moving ashore tomorrow afternoon.
 Ian has been tracking east of this morning's forecast. On its current 
 heading, the center will move inland west of Port Charlotte in about 24 
 hours. The farther south landfall means that little weakening is expected 
 prior to landfall. We have shifted the landfall point southward to Port 
 Charlotte in this advisory. The farther south landfall means that Ian's 
 center will likely emerge into the Atlantic near Daytona Beach early 
 Friday morning. It may have time to intensify some prior to moving inland 
 on the middle Georgia coast Friday afternoon. We do not think that Ian 
 will regain hurricane strength during that short period in the Atlantic, 
 but that cannot be ruled out. Once inland into Georgia and South Carolina, 
 Ian should quickly weaken to a remnant low by Saturday.
 Ian's slow movement near landfall on Thursday will result in prolonged 
 strong wind and very heavy rainfall for the Florida Peninsula. By the time 
 Ian moves northward into Georgia, however, it should have ingested plenty 
 of dry air, resulting in significantly lower rainfall amounts over Georgia 
 and the Carolinas on Friday and Saturday.

Having spent a fair amount of time at my parent’s former house on Sanibel, if 
Ian goes over Sanibel and Captiva there won’t be much left when it’s gone. My 
folks owned a place on Sanibel from the late 1960s until the early 80s. They 
bailed because it was getting too commercialized - in other words, they were 
letting too many people over the bridge. Lots of great memories from there. We 
would fly down on the weekends in the winter, we probably spent about half of 
the weekends in the wintertime down there. From Indy to Talladega for a bio 
break then across the Gulf to Sanibel. There was a grass airstrip in the middle 
of the island, and we would just taxi down the road and park the Beechcraft in 
front of the house.

I think the house was about 10-12 feet above sea level, so it would be 
inundated by this I suspect.

predicting, I know a guy who currently appears to be more in trouble 
than your house was on that track.

for Ft. Myers.

Our Forecast
A reconnaissance plane investigating Ian is finding that the hurricane 
is quickly regaining its strength now that the center is back over 
water. Some additional strengthening is likely over the next 24 hours 
prior to the center moving ashore tomorrow afternoon.
Ian has been tracking east of this morning's forecast. On its current 
heading, the center will move inland west of Port Charlotte in about 24 
hours. The farther south landfall means that little weakening is 
expected prior to landfall. We have shifted the landfall point southward 
to Port Charlotte in this advisory. The farther south landfall means 
that Ian's center will likely emerge into the Atlantic near Daytona 
Beach early Friday morning. It may have time to intensify some prior to 
moving inland on the middle Georgia coast Friday afternoon. We do not

I like that!

Yeah, there’s only so much you can do. If my sister in law was home we would 
button the place up, pack up things and head over there (she lives on the east 
coast over by West Palm) since they won’t get any of the storm. Then it’s just 
a matter of getting back after the storm to assess the damage.

The models are rarely “exactly” right, and a shift of a few degrees of the path 
in one direction or another can make a substantial difference in how bad things 
get, so I’m not ready to freak out just yet. As a long time local weather 
forecaster that has a list of rules says about safety during a hurricane, the 
last rule being “Rule #7 - Don’t freak out unless I’m freaking out.” It’s so 
well known around here that a local brewery has a “Rule #7” beer.

The models are now showing a slight shift to the south of us, and that’s god 
news for us, sort of. If we end up on the north side of the eye we’ll get more 
wind, but it will be of lower velocity since the eye may be farther away. 
Again, this stuff is all pure speculation until a few hours before landfall.
